1920s bungalow kitchen remodel in progress

First off, thank you gardenweb community for all the information and knowledge posted on this forum. Without this site we would have been lost. This has been so far a long process 9 months or so in the works. Extension/full gut. We cannot wait until it is complete in 2-3 weeks.

Cabinets are custom made, inset modified shaker style
BM simply white and nobhill sage. Upper cabinets will have glass doors to match the grid pattern on the windows.

Counters will be white macaubas quartzite

Progress pictures (I don't have any good shots of the kitchen before any demo, it is on my dslr and I have not had a chance to go through them).

Thanks rockybird and beautybutdebtfree. We kind of went with a green theme for the house. The walls are grey with a hint of green. Only shows the green in the right light. The stained concrete on the new part is a deeper green with amber and walnut.

One thing you can do with old photos is to scan them at the highest resolution that you can. Then begin blowing up the scan, and looking into the detail of the photo. You will be very surprised what you begin to see. I did this with some of the old old family photos taken back in the early 1900s. Blowing them up and peeking at things like the scuff marks on the shoes of the children, the detailing on the home made dresses, a barb wire fence between the yard and a corn field, which had corn ears fully grown on it, so it had to be late in the year. And most of all, I could see the expression in the eyes of my grandmother. But you might see the detailing of the boards on the porch, the way the steps were built and from what, and were they painted or not. Any flower beds and what was in them. Many of the homes in my old pictures were not painted, but were of rough lumber sometimes board and batten. But the young couple were invariably standing proudly in front of their home, probably newly built or expanded. Hard working people in homemade dresses and overalls and brogan shoes. It was as close to Southern American Gothic as you can get. Another one I loved was of my great grandmother Sophia taken in the hog pen with this huge hog which she was feeding. Going on the assumption that they had pictures taken of important things or events, I decided this was important because she was proud to be able to feed such a fine hog which would be slaughtered and feel her family well during the winter. Plus, she loved animals and took good care of them. I guess I inherited that love from her.

Oooh--I just googled that stove. How beautiful. Let's see now. For my 1955 O'keefe and Merrit I would say.... Pros: 1. High btu's (for a residential--non "pro style" stove). Burners up to about 13.000. Not sure how low the simmer is, but there is a teeny weeny little simmer burner on each of the 4 burners. You can also adjust the flames easily. Everything is accessible. 2. Fold down top. Many vintage stoves have covers to make up for the lack of counter space in vintage kitchens. I use this "counter" allllllll the time. So my stove is closed more than it is open. 3. Style (of course!). A vintage kitchen needs a vintage looking stove. 4. The pilot light in the oven keeps the oven at about 100 degrees, which I love for rising bread dough. Also works to keep food warm. 5. The high end of the temp spectrum is great. My oven goes to about 600 degrees, so it makes great pizza (I keep a pizza stove on the bottom all the time. So, excellent looks and cooking performance. And mine was "only" 800 bucks. She is definitely the star of the kitchen. Visitors gravitate toward her, pet her, and gush. Cons: 1. All those pilot lights raise the gas bill a bit. But I have no idea how much. 2. All those pilot lights heat up the kitchen. I live in Northern California. In the fall and winter and spring, I love this. In July and August, it can really add unwanted heat to the kitchen. What I usually do when a heat spell is coming is turn off the gas, and gook via grill, electric kettle, and microwave. The only hassle to this is that I have to slide the 400lb stove out from the wall to shut the gas off. 3. Smell. I don't know what is going on with my stove in this respect. But the exhaust smell (it isn't a "fresh gas" smell) that comes from it when I use can be unpleasant. It isn't horribly strong, but you can smell it. It really bugs my husband. We do not have a stove pipe (which the stove should have), nor do we have a vent hood. Once we have a hood, this problem should be solved. 4. Tiny oven. I can fit a half sheet pan in there, but nothing much larger than that. I can fit a roaster, but it is tight. I cannot fit a ginormous family size pizza. So, big thanksgiving style meals would be tough (I haven't attempted any.) I really really really wish I had held out for a stove with 2 ovens. Two ovens would be a lifesaver, and many vintage stoves have 2 ovens. 5. My stove isn't well insulated, so it gets friggin hot on the outside!! When my youngest was 2, I was a nervous spaz about having him in the kitchen when I was cooking. Especially if I were making pizza! Thank goodness my boys are older now. Unfortunately, I can't really afford to have the stove taken apart, and reinsulated. (Actually, I have no clue if it even has insulation in there.) I think that's about it. There might be other concerns with a 1924 stove (it may not have continuous pilots), but if you are working with a good dealer, he or she can advise you. I have a friend with a 1920's Spark stove (yellow with red knobs!). She is an awesome cook and baker (and has the tiniest amount of counter space I've ever seen!). She adores her stove, and raves about its performance. She has a stove pipe, and I've never smelled any exhaust in her kitchen. But that remind me: older stoves with a stove pipe sit at least a foot (or more) away from the wall. this is a problem in a tiny kitchen, so you might want to look at younger stoves... Funkycamper as absolutely right. Recreating a period kitchen is not just a matter of slavishly copying the materials and features of the era you are looking to reproduce, but a process of keeping the feel of the period while incorporating modern conveniences. Stainless steel was rare in the 1920s, but available. In fact, it was used on the top of the Chrysler Building in NYC in the 1930s. So use it. Just don't go overboard with it. Take a look at thebathroom we installed in a 1928 Craftsman house. It has wholly modern faucets, vessel sinks, Asian-inspired vanity lamps, and stainless, very modern, bar pulls. But it "feels" like a craftsman bath with its rift oak cabinets and funky period tile. Anyone can copy a period kitchen. The art lies in recreating the ambiance of the period while designing a functional, modern kitchen. Lots of people here can, and have done it. So can you. It's not easy, but if it was easy, it would not be any fun.

I think you can get a generally retro feeling into a kitchen by using simple cabinetry like shaker or mission styles and going for a less "built in" look. Shelving and not having upper cabinets across all the walls helps with that. Some tile, wainscoting, soapstone or honed granite countertops, and a farmhouse sink also help. When I bought my house it had a white 1970's kitchen that I lived with for a couple of years, but then replaced. I did not go for any islands, just a cutting block table and a round table in a breakfast area with a couple of benches and chairs. The fridge is freestanding and I arranged some cabinets next to it to look like an old dresser. If I had it to do again I would just put a large dresser there as a stand alone bit of furniture...something like this. https://www.chiltons.com/collections/dining-room-furniture/products/shaker-hutch-and-buffet Hardwood floors also help with the retro feel. Here is how my kitchen turned out...the shelves next to the stove are simple restaurant stainless steel and are really convenient for plates and cups and necessary things like oil, salt, pepper, and spices etc. I purposely didn't try to cram in as many upper cabinets or as much counter space as I could into the space.

I think it was really wise to do the built-ins! I think you might always have wished that you'd done it -- and you were so right!

What exactly is a "modified Shaker?"
There's Shakier, Cottage, then other door style names. Because with modifications, they're no longer Shaker. So... A close-up?!?

Your space is looking fabulous! I particularly love the island and back of cabinets color. Your cabinets look really fantastic and the space seems so open now. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks threegraces. Us too, we have the quartzite going in today.

CEFreeman, the cabinest just have a 1/4 round trim added. I am not sure what to call it, This was done to match our existing doors in the house (and old built-in). If you look at the island picture you can see the little bit or trim on the drawers.

Our house had a built-in separating the dining room and kitchen. That built in has been the inspiration behind a lot of the house. It had glass uppers with that prairie style grid pattern. We did all the windows in the house to have the same grid pattern. It is also what we are doing on the glass uppers in the kitchen.

Pricklypearcactus, we could not believe how different it looked ourselves when the drywall was in.

It's just amazing the workmanship put into this era's homes.
Do you happen to know if yours is a Sear's Kit Home?

After looking it up I am pretty sure it is not a Sear's home.
We do know that the stucco on the house as not always been there. I am unsure when it was done though.

Here is a picture of the house when the new coat of stucco was being floated on the house.

Thanks, our countertops went on yesterday. We were both a little apprehensive after they went on. We think the colors looked better before the countertops went on.

@CEFreeman, we are going for a classic mixed with some modern elements. We are doing a flush mounted stainless apron sink instead of a porcelain apron. Also will have stainless behind the range but 2x8 subway on the rest of the back splash.

I adore the color of your walls.

I am so glad that you preserved some elements of the original layout in the windows and upper cabinets. Those details count so much in the attractiveness of those homes.

The counter does seem to emphasize the "mintyness" of your green, but it is fine. You will get to like it soon I bet.

@lesmobo, yes I think I read about that on here before. haha

@raee, thanks we tried. We also are doing octagonal glass knobs on all our door knobs in the house. Octagonal glass knobs on all our cabinets as well.

@smallhouse, thanks that front porch is new as well. It was dry rotted though so we had to redo it. We decided to tile it with a Brazilian slate.

Thanks, we were extremely happy with the upper doors. The contractor will be doing the backsplash on Monday. The cabinet maker well be coming by on Wednesday to do the final touch ups.

Thanks canuckplayer.

Here is a picture of the built in. We have some usb plugs for a charging station on the center area below the tv. The shelves are adjustable plus or minus one inch right now. If we anted to adjust them more in the future we could always drill more holes.

Looking through this thread again brought to mind the first house that I can remember living in. It was a "dutch colonial" build not sure when, but very likely before 1925 since an adjacent, later neighborhood was built in 1929. My family lived there in the late 50's. Anyway, I remember that it had a lot of built ins -- bookshelves, cupboards, china cabinet, blanket chests; the shelves were painted like yours -- white with an interior color

Dishwasher, a 9/16" gap was needed per fisher paykel. It matches the stack of drawers to the right.

I love your new kitchen! I have spent countless hours on this site anonymously celebrating everyone's successes and agonizing over the disappointments. So glad that you have a great success!

My husband and I are going to pick out a slab of sea pearl today for our remodel. The bones of our kitchen are fine so we are just repainting cabinets, replacing the hideous formica, and finally installing the BS range that has been sitting in the garage since November!

Anyway, I love your knobs and would like to know where you got them or the name of the manufacturer. I can almost hear the gasps---what? glass knobs with sea pearl?/?--- but I am a little eccentric (everyone family needs an eccentric and I embrace that role!!!) I think I might give them a try!

schicksal the controls are on the inside top of the drawers. There is also a remote to pause the cycle.

Loyalandtrue, the knobs believe it or not are from ebay. They come straight from china. I ordered one, liked the quality so I ordered a ton more. here is a link.

Everything, is pretty much complete. However, I need to take some pictures once we have things a bit more presentable. I worked on a trash pull out yesterday. We've been having an issue finding a trash pull out that would fit the space. One with the apron sink we don't have much height to work with. 2 With a center disposal there was no way two of the same trash cans would fit. There was nothing out of the box that I could install that would fit the space well. This is what I came up with.

Great solution! We also had a tight trash pullout situation and ended up with an out of the box solution but yours looks much nicer.

I love the trash pullout too.

We'll be customizing our pullout too. I bought bins from two different brands to get the best dimensions to maximize our space.

What did you do or what are you planning on doing? I still need to finish the box by removing the pencil marks and putting a coat of poly on it. But who knows when that will happen.
