With vertical grain matching, even if we wanted to, we couldn't do manufactured/pre-veneered doors since of all the ones I've seen thus far state that they wouldn't be able to do grain matching. Many of the mfg who make their own doors and offer slabs do vertical matching, a better match than brands that outsource slab doors (which is what you are likely to find most often in a local builder) I know first hand that QCCI, Wood-Mode, and RichMaid do matching. QCCI and RMK will do tape or wood edge, WM is wood edge. I would suspect that others such as Crystal, P & F, and Omega might also but check. If they outsource the doors be careful if you are going to be finicky. I typically am but put in a vertical straight grain dark cherry in my office from Showplace. This is specifically not a match but the price suited and honestly as bad as I can get I don't notice it. The match is better than I expected though. FWIW- solid edging is not really distracting particularly on dark colors. Also note that AFAIK anyone offering a door with solid wood that is veneered after the edges are done (so you don't see the solid wood) -outsources them and can't guarantee a match. Finally we had done a display at my former employ with a dark cherry vertical match. The boss had a fit saying you couldn't see it with that color... but we wanted it...(designers are all spoiled children :)

From the attached link: Raised Panel - Solid Even though the panel is called solid, it is not usually made of a single piece of wood. Wood expands and contracts with changes in humidity, and this can cause the door to split and crack. To counteract the problems of natural movement in a solid wood center panel, the panel is usually constructed using several pieces of solid stock lumber glued together. The wood strips used to construct the panel may not all match in graining and color. As in the case of the slab door, the door's strength comes from the manner in which the pieces of solid wood are reversed as they are glued. The panel is then cut on all four sides, so the center is higher than the edges. The face of the panel is usually flush with the front surface of the stiles and rails, with the edges forming a tongue which fits a corresponding groove cut into the door frame. The groove is slightly larger than the panel's edge to allow the panel to float in the frame. This simply means that the panel has room to expand and contract during humidity changes, reducing the risk of the panel cracking or splitting. I gather from the Woodmode site that this is how they construct raised panel doors as they describe their raised panel doors as being constructed from solid wood. How big an issue the movement of the centre panel in a flat panel door will be probably depends on geography (I have seen some dramatic examples here that am sure would not be acceptable to many folks while I tend to think the hairline cracking I have seen is part of the charm and patina of age of painted cabinetry. In terms of Woodmode they do kiln dry all their wood which may in part explain why they have not have felt they would get better performance from an MDF centre panel that some companies are opting for. I also think it is a market issue a lot of Consumer's in the US have a real aversion to composite wood products regardless of the possible benefits (this does not really carry over to Europe or Canada). Cabico and many other Quebec companies offer 100% MDF doors for paint finishes (same opaque finishes are usually available on maple at Cabico). Lots of their MDF door styles are raised panel. Our cabinets, though old, were in pretty good shape and now look lovely with our new paint job. I think with older homes it is wise, as you are doing, to consider the period of the home and work with it rather than do what is currently popular. And I think each home has different needs so I'm sure you'll love your new cabinets! I have to admit I was a little sad to see our 1950's GE Stratoliner range be sold but that electric cooktop was so hard to do anything but boil water on and not much could be on simultaneously, and I fell in love with the Lacanche. Anyway, I also agree per above posters that style wise it doesn't have to all be one era. Our vintage artwork is from the 30s, our red formica table and chairs (not in the pic) are from the 50s and our cabinet pulls are newer but probably 50s inspired. I love the pulls you picked and I like the 30s-50s updated kitchen in the last several posts, which seems like it would work with your bathroom staying as is. One thing we considered is that if we tore out the kitchen and put in a true MCM kitchen it would look wierd with our 1950s extensively pink tiled bathroom and then that would need to be updated. By keeping the style of our kitchen to its era, the kitchen and bathroom seem more in sync and I don't seeing us (other than putting in new grout and maybe painting the walls) changing our pink tiled bathroom, which also made our approach more cost effective. I think doing a blend of 30s-40s to early 50s, your bathroom would fit nicely into the updated kitchen.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I especially like those pictures of knotty pine kitchens. I hadn't been using the right search terms to find examples of something like ours. I think it seems like, regardless of what we do... that black or stainless will work better. It just feels like white will stand out too much against the cabinets to do white on all appliances. The dishwasher (in picture) is currently black and goes well as it blends with the knots and the iron hardware. I think the idea of black stainless is cool. I'll have to look into that. I didn't really realize that the hood might not work well and need to be replaced. I guess if not going with retro color then to keep it black. I also like the suggestion of stainless steel for farmhouse sink (if of course it fits the cabinets). Especially if going with black appliances, I imagine it will stand out less. Plus, I'd think stainless steel is easier to keep clean, no worries about chipping and less prone to dish breakage. I'm not sure for the countertops or backsplash. Like I said, considering keeping counters but if we do change... it's tough to settle on stone. We aren't against laminate but at that point, why not keep the yellow one since I do think it's a good color choice. But would love suggestions. My wife mentioned subway tiles (white?) as a clean look against the knotted wood and it would go with the farmhouse sink and rustic feel. Would that work with the black appliances and dark wood or stand out too much? The soffits can also be wall color (which has yet to be decided but likely a cream color) or something different. Again thanks for help thus far and I welcome more ideas and opinions!
