whole house water filter systems

We are considering the addition of a whole house water filtration system. The purposes: better tasting drinking water, and to get no sediment in the dishwasher. Our refrigerator ice maker/water dispenser has always had a filter on it, and will again after the kitchen remodel is done. It makes a big difference in the water taste.

We looked at the array of systems in Home Depot and are considering having a water person (Culligan man??) come out. But it would help if we knew something - can anyone lead us to a website where we could learn about the various water filtration systems, before we get salesmen breathing down our necks?

Your starting point isn't Home Depot or Culligan. Begin with an independent water test. Until you know what the task to be accomplished is, there's no sense in throwing filters at it blindly. "Filtration" is a BIG word. Find out what you're dealing with first.

Your own water company may be best/cheapest place to begin. They'll tell you what they're delivering for free. If you have a well, you're on your own.

Did you ever find the information you were looking for? I'm looking for a whole house water filtration system too, I'm in San Diego and the water tastes terrible! There are a couple I've found that require no maintenance but they're in the $3000-$4000 range. So I'm still looking. I did find a small system at Lowe's that was $300 but I don't know how efficient or long lasting it will be. Thanks! C

Is there a point to your post? Is English your first language? Are you a SPAMMER? BTW - "typical" filters DO NOT soften water - they remove particulate and other microscopic things. Softeners, soften water. They can be combined with a filter if your application warrants. Better find a new job - one that you know something about.

We are on city water (which isn't very hard) and we also are looking for a whole house water filter system to filter Chlorine and Chloramine. And also a filter for pharmaceuticals. Most chlorine is injested in the shower and not in drinking water. The POU filters for the shower can't be hidden as well as the POU filters for drinking water in the kitchen, hence my quest for the whole house. From what I can find out, it looks like even if we have a whole house filter for chlorine/chloramine, we also need to install a POU reverse osmosis filter for our drinking water in order to filter pharmaceuticals. I also have read numerous reviews, which all sound "slanted". So if you have learned anything that convinces you in favor of one product over another, I would be very interested. Right now, I'm looking at Aquasana and Puronics. Did you go with a particular product for whole house filtering?

Jenny, Any update on what you ended up doing? I installed a whole house softener for hard water issues, but I have odor issues (sulfur and chlorine mostly). I'm leaning toward adding a charcoal filter before the softener. We also have RO in the kitchen and wet bars. Also, you could always just have another hole drilled for the RO faucet without replacing the granite slab. If you have an undermounted sink, the new hole is all you need. What did you end up doing?

dunno about that. Look harder at EWS's site and you'll see they sell softeners, just the same as any other company that sells softeners. The hard (forgive the pun) truth is that if you have hard water, an ion exchange softener is the most practical and cost effective way for a homeowner to remove calcium from their water supply. What is hard water? 1-3 grains/gal is slightly hard water, anything over 20 grains is ludicrously hard water. Really, if your water is apt to make soap scum rings on your tub, spot your glasses and dishes and leave white powdery deposits on plumbing fixtures, your water is hard and you need a softener. Be advised that there are NO whole-house filtration systems (at least none that are worth anything) that require no maintenance....unless what you mean is that they do it for you.

Suggest you define your purpose. Taste can be easily handled by RO with nothing else. If you want soft water for laundry/batheing, that's a different issue. If you want specific filtration for other specific concerns that's a different issue.

A plain sediment only or activated charcoal (sediment/smell/taste) will cost less than $50 for the unit and $10 or so per cartridge if you are on safe city water, probably all you really need.
