Should all fixtures match in a kitchen?

The custom cabinet guys come Monday to go over things with me, the electrician comes this Saturday, so I need to start ordering my light fixtures for the kitchen and utility room...and the dining room, and the sitting area. lol. But let's do the kitchen first.

I'll be using ORB for the hardware on the cabs and drawers, and ORB on the kitchen faucet.

A built in hutch will have green depression glass knobs and pulls.

I really don't want ORB for the finish for the overhead lights which will have the "school house" shades with a red stripe. I love the nickel finish because it looks more authentic than ORB.

Can I go with a nickel finish for the overhead lights even though most of the kitchen will have the ORB? One light will be above the kitchen sink, the other in the middle of the room.

Yes, you can definitely mix finishes. I have polished nickel faucet and some of the knobs are glass and some are polished nickel. My light fixtures are antique brass. I think the variety makes it look more authentic. You do not want every finish to be matchy, matchy!

I think the mix will make the room more cozy and inviting. I'm not a matchy person.

Do you want them to match? They don't have to be exactly the same, if you don't wan them to be, but they should probably have elements that coordinate. My living room and dining room are open to each other, separated by an archway. What I did was put the same white wood blinds on all windows. Then I have curtains up on the same kind of rods. The curtains themselves are different, but both simple with just rod pockets, no fancy details. The living room has nubby gold colored curtains, the dining room has pink and yellow (and other colors) print curtains. ThIs way, each room is different, but they relate to each other. Also, if you go with simple rod pocket curtains, it's relatively cheap and easy to switch out by season, whim, etc. If you can sew a straight seam, you can turn any fabric into simple curtains.

IMO it really depends upon individual situations. Proximity weighs in, too. Of course, all the same finishes is fine; but that does not mean mixing isn't to be done, just that it needs to be done thoughtfully. A mix can draw attention to what you want to be focal points and can make a room be more interesting visually. In our guest bath, all of the finishes are brushed nickel, except the TP holder. But the TP holder is attached to the side of a dark wood vanity, and I did not want to draw attention to it. The antique bronze blended in perfectly, yet does not look out of place because it is visually an extension of the vanity. Along those lines, shower curtain rods, shower door handles and toilet levers are often not a design feature you want to accent, so I would use what would make them visually less noticeable. Ceiling lighting and sconces generally are the same finish, but I believe you can successful pull off an outstanding antique bronze chandelier, for example, by having utilitarian sconces and faucet fixtures in a nickel finish. Items on the same impact level, such as faucets and towel bars, I would usually try to keep the same finish. If the faucets are the focal, they could be one finish and the balance of the other items in the room be something else. As for proximity, I believe all the finishes inside the shower can match, but be different than the finishes in other areas of the room, IF there is a reason/point of doing so. A shower head in one finish and the shower knobs in another would be trickier to pull off but may work if the finish of the knobs blended with the tile so the shower head becomes a focal point. Some finishes mix better than others. And the design style of the features in the mix matter. As does the backdrop, as mentioned above.

I feel like the hardwoods in the kitchen don’t go well with the cherry cabinets? I then have that huge hickory unit in the living room so I just wonder what hardwood color I could place throughout that would work with all of it? I definitely do not like the orange tone of the dining and office floor. The kitchen is yet another type, more of a brown with some red to it and a wider plank. A lot of them are hollow and lifting so we do plan on removing all of that anyways. Honestly at this point I’m thinking maybe I should remove the dining and office floors and just start all from scratch rather than buy new and then refinish all of that. I’m a little scared of the refinishing mess!! Would love any hardwood color suggestions. The sturdier the better too as we have very active dogs!

That seems fine. Match the ones that are grouped together (like all across the garage), but just coordinate overall feel and finish beyond that.

Thanks, guys. It's starting to get really hard now picking things out. And here I thought paint choices would be the hardest!

Now I have a question about red's matching. lol. I was told that the eye plays tricks and doesn't remember what it just saw, so it's okay not to have perfect matches in color. It proved true in the new room, but a kitchen is smaller.

Should the red in the fixture directly match the red diamonds in the backsplash? Can you all just come over and help me? lol

I need to get more specific. The red I'm concerned about is in the kitchen floor..once it's laid. The link below will show you the two colors I'll be using, Roasted Marshmallow and Caboose, which will be in a checkerboard pattern, 12 x 12" squares. The Caboose is more of a rust color, but I love it.

Here is the kitchen sink light I want with a matching one in the center of the room, same color, but different style.

(Sorry, can't do hyperlinks) The backsplash will be white square porcelain tile with some red diamonds thrown in, but not a lot.

Would the "eye" forgive the red in the floor not matching the red in the tile and overhead light?

your reds don't have to exactly match as long as the undertones are the same..the base below the red..

such as is it an orangey red, yellowy red, bluish red, pinkish red..etc..

that is the most important thing is that they don't CLASH, not that they match exactly..take a small sample of the reds and hold them together, if they don't CLASH then it won't matter..

sometimes a room looks better when the colors are in the same family but not exact matches anyway, things too matchy matchy tend to look contrived or outdated..
