New toilet flush designs...again

I have installed two low water use toilets in my house, one a Kohler the other an Eljer, like the Eljer best. But, Home Depot no longer carries the Eljer Patriot (it is a high seat unit), so looking at other brands, not the big buck ones, please. Both of my low water use toilets have rather conventional looking water tanks, but I see in the listing for some other brands statements like: " ET Flapperless elongated toilet in white. Uses Niagara Flapperless flush technology which eliminates flappers or any other type of seal in your toilet." This sounds radically different than the past history..could it be better, or just different. This may not be a fair question, but I do recall from the distant past some toilets had some kind of a "pressure bag" arrange to develop more flush pressure, this is something I don't want in a toilet.

Our downstairs toilet is pressure assisted...there is a metal tank (not any kind of bag) in the toilet tank, and as the water fills it the air in the tank is compressed. Then when you flush, the compressed air helps to move the water through the system. Gives a great flush, and had it about 10 years so far, no problems. A pretty simple system.

Much more trouble free than the 1.5 gallon gravity flush model upstairs, which I'd like to replace...it's about 15 years old, and clogs way to frequently at this point.

Here is my 2cents I have nothing to back it up other then past "new technology experience" So with that said... I did a lot of research to find a replacement toilet for the 3 that were contractor installed in the early 90's in my house, which all had the plunger accessory Â you know the plunger that sits beside the toilet on a daily basis). So ton's of research later I found Toto's to be the BEST. I purchased the Toto skirted Carolina over 3 years ago and the plunger is now in the garage. I would not want to be part of the trial stage of new toilet technology. If you want to consider the 2 button Toto's that give you the option for #1 and #2. I'd go that route first. Many toilets are still having problems with the low flow 1.6 technologies so I myself wouldn't do it.

AK 217, it was I having a similar problem recently, do a search on my name or "toilet not flushing properly" and you should find it. From what I've learned it could well be the toilet design, but being new doesn't mean there isn't a blockage, on the contrary there may be something stuck in there from the installation. I have yet to remove mine from the base to check the passages but that's probably what I'll have to do unless I'm lucky with a snake. Mine flushes totally normally if it's just water or a small amount of solids which seems odd since it blocks so easily with more solids....so others and I concluded it's not the drain itself probably, since water goes fine. I'm convinced that mine's blocked with something thin that's really wedged in there, a pen or a lollipop stick or something - something that provides little or no resistance to water and small solids. After spending 30+ years in NZ and Australia, where the diameter of the toilet outlet and all the bends etc in any toilet are 100mm/4" (and the bends are nowhere near as tight either) I've probably encountered about three, maybe four toilet blockages.....now I'm back in Canada, it seems to happen all the time, and I can see why. Dual flush is a good idea, but not with these restrictive toilets.....in fact, we'd all be better if the cistern was still overhead, like in the old days. THAT was a flush, and you could get much greater force with much less water.

With all due respect to the many fine folks who contribute here, the sample size is just too small to be accurate. I have an Kohler toilet (model unknown) that rarely clogs but that doesn’t necessarily make that particular model of toilet a good “flusher” because we (and our bathroom habits) are all different. I have a neighbor whose kid, I swear, could clog a pit latrine, he’s constantly plunging. Another friend who seems to use about a half roll of toilet paper at a time (ok, that’s a bit of an exaggeration). The only way to really tell is to get a bunch of toilets, install them on identical plumbing systems, a flush consistent waste. That’s a job that’s a lot bigger than any individual.

We have a Kohler Corbelle. It's a skirted two-piece. https://www.us.kohler.com/us/corbelle-comfort-height-two-piece-elongated-1.28-gpf-chair-height-toilet/productDetail/toilets/1323975.htm It's been installed for almost three months now and I'm pleasantly surprised at how infrequently 'residuals' are left - it's not never, but close enough for us. We have the continuous clean version and it requires VERY little cleaning overall, too. A quick scrub of the bowl every couple weeks - this is mostly due to our hard water which leaves some water spots on the bowl finish. Obviously, the exterior and seat need more frequent wipe downs, but the skirted exterior and structure of the toilet seat make it easier to clean than our previous toilet, too.

Why do you like the Eljer better?

Anyway, we have both a standard and an elongated bowl Kohlers from HD (1.6 gpf). (btw, Lowe's also sells the same ones) Neither has any clog problems and are quiet. One noticeable difference is that standard bowl flushes "clean" much more frequently than the elongated bowl, if you know what I mean. So the standard is a better performer and a good, reliable toilet. Two thumbs up.

The Eljer was purchased for a number of reasons, cost (low), looks, and high seat, 17" off the floor. It has an elongated bowl. It is in the bathroom my wife uses, not me, I go in only to check it out every few weeks. She likes it, and she is demanding,so it must be good. I'd buy another, but Home Depot no longer stocks, but I do like their low cost replacement, which has good customer reviews. I forget the make, maybe Glacial Bay (if that's the name), a low cost toilet..and it too has a 17" high seat. The older I get the more I appreciate not having to stand up from a low seat. The subject application is for the "powder room" on the main floor.

We have an American Standard in our master bedroom bath, my bathroom, and it works fine too, but is the usual low height. It is about 10 years old and the flapper started to leak so I replaced the flapper. The toilet operates differently now, uses almost all the water (more water) in the tank before the flapper closes. This gives both a cleaner and quieter flush...I like it. I plan to measure the tank to see how much water it is using. The arrangement uses a link chain between the release handle and the flapper. The chain has a float in the chain link and with the old flapper when the water got low enough for that float to let the flapper close, it snapped closed. The new flapper doesn't seem to be affected by the float. All this could be one of the problems with this "regular" flush design..but as I'm on a well, I'm not really concerned about a pint or two per flush one way or the other.
