Removing cat urine smell

One or more of our cats has urinated on the carpet in our apartment. They've done it pretty badly in a couple of spots. We've tried several things but haven't been able to remove the smell. Can someone help? This really sticks & I dread being at home because of it.

sorry to hear about this have had the same problem myself in the past. I found that putting down an odour neutrilising carpet powder after giving the area a thorough clean helped. If possible lift the affected area and put it underneath the carpet as well and leave to sit for 24hrs before you hoover. do it at least twice and you should get a definate improvement. well mine no longer smells and it was bad.

Kittiemom-I can totally sympathize! I have a cat that is peeing all over my house and have tried just about everything to get the odor out,to no avail! There have been several recommendations mentioned,one of which seems to be most popular(but didn't work for me)is Nature's Miracle.You can order it online and I think most Pet Smart stores carry it.I just saw a commercial last night advertising Urine Gone,which I think I will try.Just Google it and there are several resources for ordering it.The one on TV even sends a blacklight for detecting the urine stains,which would be a good thing to have.If neither of those products work for you just Google pet stains and odors and there are a lot of other suggestions to be found.Good luck!......Lillie

I think it's actually Nature's Miracle. It's also extremely expensive, as it was the first on the block. There are a number of other types that I find work just was well, but don't cost nearly as much. Simple Solution is one. Petsmart also sells a brand of their own. It leaves a faint vanilla smell. Lay a couple of old rags over the hearth, soak with the solution of your choice, and then cover with plastic wrap or tin foil. This will help keep it from drying out before it soaks into the bricks deeply enough to make a difference. You'll likely have to do this numerous times.

I've had luck with Natures-Miracle for Cats but you can also use some of the enzyme products made for removing odor from kennels. You're going to need to saturate the area so don't just lightly spray it around the porch. I would buy the large containers then use a garden sprayer to apply it. You may have to do this several times......letting it dry in between each treatment. Also, don't forget to treat the walls at least 12 inches up from the floor. Straight ammonia will clean and deoderize the smell which is needed before painting because if another cat goes down there and it was only painted they will start peeing again. After the ammonia if you still feel you can smell it set a onal gel block down there and you'll be set

First thing to do is try an application of Nature's Miracle enzyme treatment. This product chemically changes animal waste residue and removes the smell. Completely, as long as the residue is covered. Second thing would be a shellac based primer---not necessarily Kilz, unless you get the shellac based type. It has to be shellac based to seal whatever it is applied to/on. My go to type is BIN shellac based primer by Zinsser. Just make sure the product you purchase is fresh, meaning going to a real paint store and not a 'might sit on the shelf for years' home improvement store. That means you might be able to spray on the Nature's Miracle on the walls if there is no physical damage, let it dry, and apply the BIN. Removing carpet is a must, other surfaces might be redeemable by flooding with Nature's Miracle, to get into cracks/gaps. We bought our current house as a repo after the previous residents kept six dogs, three of which never---that is never went outside for about five years. The smell was atrocious. However, having dealt with less intense situation on the same line, I knew the NM would do the trick---and it did.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! Please keep them coming! I think it may have been stress from moving that triggered them to start. Then when we cleaned it all the smell probably wasn't removed, so they kept going back. They NEVER did this when we were in our previous home. Their litter boxes are clean, so that's not the problem. I'll be so happy to find something that works - the ammonia smell makes me sick. We've tried Simple Solution & the smell is better but not yet gone.

The pet urine remover that works best for me is Simple Solution. It's also the most economical because it is available in a concentrate that mixes with water. You MUST follow label instructions EXACTLY in order for it to be effective. Drench the urine stains so that the solution goes through the carpet, through the pad, and into the subfloor. That's the only way to eliminate all sources of the odor. Also, if you have used other cleaning solutions previously, you need to follow SS's label instructions to remove the cleaner residues BEFORE applying SS itself.

A blacklight is invaluable for locating urine stains. Urine glows under blacklight in a darkened room, so you can find and treat stains that you may otherwise overlook.

Someone mentiond something on my thread about my peeing cat that might be worth a try also.Ellen said that she had used a citrus spray where her cat was peeing and on things that might be peed on to deter the behavior.Maybe that would be worth a try to deter the cats from peeing in the same place again.I am going to try it and see what happens.......Lillie

Catteries use a product called K. O. E. (Kennel Odor Eliminator)...I have used it myself when I fostered cats/kittens.

They have it at KV Vet Supply....

When my cat was sick he urinated on the carpet. I found Nature's Miracle to work, but you have to follow the directions exactly and absolutely soak the carpet to the floor and allow it to dry over a matter of weeks. It did eliminate the odor.

As many of us have mentioned on many posts like this, cats usually soil when they are ill with bladder or kidney infections, especially if the cat usually uses the litter box, so consider looking to the vet to see if your cat has a urinary tract infection.

Keep in mind that cats and dogs can smell things we can't. If there were cats living in your apartment previously, your cats may be able to smell any old urine spots, even if the carpets had been cleaned(especially if the pad or subfloor wasn't treated) or replaced.
Most odor eliminators use enzymes that take time to work and as Elly_nj said, you have to soak all the way through to the floor. I have used Nature's Miracle more than any other and it has always worked for me, but at times I've had to pull up the carpet and soak the backside, pad and floor to get the job done. Also, if it's mainly a couple of problem areas, after you treat those areas, re-arrange the furniture if you have to, to keep your cats from getting to those spots. Good luck.

My vet recommended Anti-Icky Poo. I've been using that on our floors and it works well. We use it on hardwood but I think it's more formulated for carpeting.

I use OdoBan - sold in gallon size at Sam's Club or in spray bottles at area grocery stores. I should buy stock in the stuff!

OdoBan has taken out every odor I've tried it on, including cat pee. It does leave its own smell, but that dissipates after a while.

What it won't do is remove the stains, its strictly to just get rid of the stink. For stains, I use Spot Shot.
