Used disposal with septic at this location for 28 years with no trouble. Other locations with disposal and septic for more years with no trouble. The microbes love the stuff. Unless your septic system is overloaded or compromised in some other way you should have no issues.

All of the guidelines for how often to pump a septic tank mention that if you have a disposal, the time between tank pumpings is reduced.

So, the answer is that you can use it but it will boost the frequency of tank maintenance.

What you don't want to do is put grease down the drain.

I have a septic system. I used to put tons of stuff down our garbage disposal, thinking it was a good thing for the septic tank. Wrong.
It can get overloaded and unable to break things down.
My disposal is broken, and I've learned to live without one.
But if I had a new ones, I wouldn't put much of anything down it. Save all that stuff for the compost pile!

"The microbes love the stuff." Says what expert? After cleaning the filter on my 4-year old system, I learned that hair and much vegetable fiber does not break down in septic systems. They are just solids that accumulate until pumping. I do not have a disposal.

Agree non-degradables do accumulate until pumped. Septic systems do need to be pumped/inspected at appropriate intervals and those intervals will be shorter with more solids. I do regard occasional pumping/inspection as normal maintenance required of any septic system. I did not mean to imply that in 28 years using a disposal with my septic system I've never done anything to maintain it. To be specific, I typically pump/inspect it every five years or so. Upon each of those occasions, there were no problems of any kind observed and was advised I could wait longer.
