Fabric Roman Shades - Can You Recommend a Good Source?

DD is moving into a small Cape w/an open living space. She has 2 front windows and one side window in the dining/LR area.

Since the space is small she thought inside mount fabric Roman shades would make good window treatments. They could be lined for privacy, but won't add too much visual "bulk" to the space.

I tried doing a search on this forum for Roman shade sources online, but didn't find any. Has anyone had a good experience with a site they would recommend?

Try blinds.com. That a look at their premium woven woods line. Good product, good selection and low prices.

But still hoping to find a source for fabric shades. Anyone?

Thanks, I didn't know Romans were that hard and precise to make. I do want something that hangs and works well and doesn't look "home made". I also didn't know that hand sewn individual rings were better than the tapes. JC Penny had about 5 fabrics in each blind to choose from for lower prices. There was one book that had quite a few more but even the person helping me was not at all impressed with the choices. It was when I went to the custom line that these prices came up. I am glad I am not the only one who thinks they are just too high. Boy I thought I had sticker shock when I found out faucets can cost 900.00 or more. I may look into local custom shops and individuals, also. I just am not sure how to find someone good. I would not be happy if they didn't fit, hang or work properly. I may even already have patterns for them. I kind of like the idea of picking out the fabric and then having someone make them if I can find someone good who wont charge that much. 250.00 I can handle, 500.00 and up I think is just more than I want to pay if I don't have to. If I can't do the custom route for under 350.00 I will probly go with one of the online sources mentioned. Smith and Noble do have some fabrics to choose from. Most are solids, but there are a couple of simple prints that might be nice. Sue

I have cordless blackout cellular shades from selectblinds.com. They're available in all different colors. With the inside mount, they pretty much disappear when fully open. In the third picture linked below you can see that they are pretty effective for blocking light. When fully open they stack about 4.5 inches. Netla, the first book that came to mind, though an old classic was Mary Barton: A Tale of Manchester Life by Mrs Gaskell, written in the time of those 'dark satanic mills'. Modern writers from that area include Val McDermid, popular crime writer and Jeanette Winterson Oranges are Not the Only Fruit; she has become an increasing angry lesbian so don't know about her other work. ;-( You will love both Durham and York, both small enough to easily walk around and with beautiful church and other buildings. There is The Story of Durham by Douglas Pocock which looks interesting (though pricey). The site below gives some eg's of books set in/about York. Loads of history . . . Roman, Viking, railways, chocolate-making etc. Whitby is also interesting. Look out for anything from Saint Hilda to Captain Cook . .. and Dracula! Hope this helps a bit. Becky - don't know if you remember my room and link from up-thread but I've continued to follow your situation and thought I'd give you an update on mine since we have similar large, private settings and goals for views. Much as I love roman shades whether fabric or some kind of woven wood/bamboo, I just didn't want to cover up that much glass with the stack height. We did a test run with a textured roller shade on 2 windows in our living room. That way if we hated them it wasn't an investment in every window and we'd keep looking. Here's what we have, a roller shade behind a cassette. You can see the texture, it's not room darkening but offers excellent light/glare control and privacy. When they're open, they are very unobtrusive and leave the glass bare. The cassettes aren't invisible but if you match your wood they will disappear as much as anything can. Mine are in between my wall and my wood color so they have a bit of warmth to them. We are probably going to use these throughout the house where we need light control. Some of those windows may get additional decoration with curtains, and that's an opportunity to add some pattern and color. Personally, I don't think these have a modern look or really any definitive style look because I chose a neutral to basically disappear. If you chose a wood tone or a color of course they will be a focal point and that to me is where the clean lined modern look comes in. But as a first layer with curtains or even on their own matched to your wood, IMO they can work with any home or decorating style. Hope that helps. It's a tough decision and a lot of money, that's for sure!

Someone posted a good and reasonable source from Etsy.
I don't remember the name, but when I looked on Etsy there were quite a few sources.

Have you checked JCP? I got nearly all the romans in my house from them, they usually have good sales, esp. if windows are a standard size.

I had some valances with jabots made from the Etsy seller linked below. They were gorgeous.Far better than I had imagined. He workmanship is top notch.I went and had some Roman Shades and another valance for my kitchen that should be here by Fri. She is shipping today. Right now she has free shipping.That's a good chunk if you have to pay for it.

Mind you the prices are for labor only. You need to buy your own fabric and liner. There are some good onlinesources. I got some from fabric guru and also from barncenterfabric. Good prices and they will ship directly to the seller.

I think you have more choices this way. You can convo her and ask questions and she can also make suggestions.

denali2007, thank you for the above post. Chloe45 posted that someone had good luck with an Etsy seller.

Before you wrote I went on the site and found the seller you referenced and thought they sounded good. I wrote a quick note asking about yardage amounts and received a really quick and nicely written reply.

I was impressed, but still a little wary of placing a custom nonreturnable order that, though well-priced, will still be in the hundreds of dollars.

I appreciate hearing about how satisfied you were with the service and workmanship. I've sent the link to DD so she can take a look.
