do you mow your own yard, yourself

Since I am about to go out and do mine, I thought, I ask. I am always wondering how many peeps mow their own yard.

Moni, who considers mowing cross training for her bike rides. :)

    Yes, I mow my own yard. It's a push mower,and I find
    it's good exercise.

Yep. And it's huge and hilly, takes about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. We have a system: Hub hates the noise of the power mower, so he uses the reel on the flat parts; then I do the edges and the hills with the power. The lawn actually looks much better where the reel is used, but it's too hard to use around the woods and the edges. A local kid did it for us one summer and charged $25 each time to use our mower, but he grew up.

How well do you like your rider's mowing deck?

    Q

JD X500 48" mowing deck... Cuts fine and not too difficult to level and that's a good thing because it seems that even though dealers are required to level the deck during the PDI few actually do. R&R of the deck could be a little easier, the J bolts in the rear can be a PITA, but it's not as bad as some I've used or owned. The BEST thing about the Select Series decks are that the anti-scalp wheels rotate 90 degrees so the deck rolls in or out from under the tractor... a nice feature for we old guys. I will not buy a GT without this feature now that I've experienced it.

Use your own yard debris for mulch.

    Q

    Comments (14)
Back to the topic of contaminants from waste wood: In my state (MO) most if not all of the mulching and composting operations are exempted from obtaining a permit for processing/disposing of solid waste since they are turning waste into a product. Technically they should get an official Permit Exemption letter from the state, but only some of them do. The exemption states that they are not supposed to use treated, painted etc. wood. However, since they are exempt from permitting, there is no inspection process as there is with permitted facilities. Some of the larger composting operations, especially those composting food scrap, are required to get permits so the state can help control odor issues, etc. That gives the inspectors an opportunity to at least see the operation. The person I talked to also said they know of no federal regulations on mulch. Your state may vary, but there is certainly a possibility that all kinds of stuff *could* be used to make mulch and it would be hard to detect by looking. As always, buyer beware. Do you make your own wreath bows?

    Q

    Comments (6)
The length of ribbon you need will depend on the size of bow you want of course. So if you want an 8" bow each loop will be 4" and require 8" of ribbon. Multiply that by the number of loops you want (not less than 8) plus tails. If you make an experimental bow you will soon see how to estimate. You can use any width of ribbon but need more loops the narrower it is for a full look. IMO long tails look very nice on a wreath and with wired ribbon you can easily twist them to arrange nicely. If you want a double bow you'll need more but not necessarily double as your top bow can be smaller. I much prefer wired ribbon as I find it easier to use. With non-wired ribbon I always cut V's in the center of the bow so the loops are easier to tie together and arrange. At Christmas one year I made a simple single bow with long tails for my outside wreath with 6" wide plastic foil ribbon which was very easy to use. Just an idea as they would be very easy for children to do and look nice with greenery. If you have a Costco nearby they have the best price I've ever found for wide wired ribbon. I used to have a store and we did a lot of gift wrapping and Costco's prices were even better than wholesale. Save On Crafts is my go-to place for crafting ideas and instructions altho they don't tell how much ribbon for a bow but do give instructions for different types of bows. Here is a link that might be useful: how to make bows

I mow with a "personal pace" push mower. It's not exactly self-propelled like my old one.......I think "personal pace" means the harder you push, the faster it goes. So there's some assistance, but not a huge amount.

Take note, Azzalea: When I could no longer reliably start a mower by pulling the cord, I bought one with electric start. It's gas powered, but with a rechargeable key ignition. I actually enjoy mowing. I don't realize that I'm exhausted and out of breath until I stop. :-)

Yes, I do. I don't enjoy it but I am too cheap to pay someone to do it.

Yes, wouldn't trust anyone else to do it, seeing as I've booby-trapped the lawn with flower beds and shrubs! We use the riding mower for the big front lawn, the pasture in front of the barn, and the orchard, and I trim with the push mower. The back yard gets just the push mower treatment because I may have overplanted just a wee touch. I enjoy mowing this time of year!

I started mowing our yard when I was 17 and have done it ever since except for one summer when I found someone who needed some money and did a wonderful job. I would have kept him, but I moved too far away for him to be able to come to my house.

It is included in my assessment fees for the development. But up at the cabin there's 4 acres to mow. I do my 1/4 every weekend, and mom's 1/4 most of the time too. Then my daughter mows her own 1/4, and my sister does her own too. Sometimes either my daughter or sister will mow mom's.
Needless to say, we have a riding mower there.
    Leslie

Yes I do with an electric mower.

All five acres of it!!! Between hubby and I and our lawn tractor with a 60" cutting deck!!!!

Yes and no. I mow the back most of the time, did yesterday as a matter of fact. And the older two boys do the front. I like mowing the lawn it's a bit theraputic.

Judy, pop Greg in the back of the head for me!!! How dare he cross you off his list!! LOL

Hubby decided this season that he will do it. We've always had a gardener do it, but with the economy the way it is...
Plus - seems that they gardener kept wanting more money each year to do less work. Last season was the last straw. We pay by the month and he decided that months with 5 weeks in it - he'd only come 4 times.

My husband or son does. I wouldn't think of it not with my lower back.

I never have. We have 1 1/2 acres and DH LIKES to mow. Once when he was out of commission our neighbor came over and mowed. The neighbor is DH's doc. I thought that was really sweet. Nope, once DH can't do it I'll let a GS do it.

Yeah - all 2.5 acres and have for 23 years. We have a riding mower for the main part then a high wheel one for hills and under trees. I like doing the riding mower. Don't tell DH but I like to see how fast I can go on the back 40. LOL! You have to wear a mask, glasses and a hat or get lots of debris and bugs in your nose/mouth/hair.

We paid last year to get our lawn at the "not sold yet"house to get mowed. This year I bought a second hand mower, and I will mow it myself. I will come out cheaper! I just hate hauling a stinky mower back and forth, for about 100 miles.

Like Karen, I am just to cheap to pay someone to do it. Jerry does it when he "has to", cause I am gone, but usually only when it gets really high. ;)

I got done mowing. Now I will shred the leaves that accumulated in the corners, and then spread them on my flower beds as mulch.

Moni... inside for a short break

Ever since DH passed away, I've been paying someone to cut the lawn, rake the leaves, plow the snow, clean the gutters, and so on. I figure it's still cheaper than paying a maintenance fee in some condominium.

I definitely mow my own. Because I could never start our mower, DH bought me a 24 volt battery mower. It's heavy but I get a good workout.

Yes, I mow. I used to do it all but my husband helps now. I always thought I could get a lot of good "thinking" done while I mowed the yard. I still like to mow.

No, the gardener does it. And just as well because he trims the neighbour's huge hedge and tends to the plants, which I would have killed a long time ago.

Yes i mow, little under two acres. I have always liked doing it. DH use to take his lawn tractor and mow around the edges and flower beds but he has kidney stones at the moment and can't be on mower. Haven't mowed yet this season but if weather holds will have to this week end.

DH is in charge of the yard. Though he usually delegates to his unhired hands-- DS12 and DS15. They work for hockey gear and food.

I personally have not mowed a yard since I was the unhired hand in high school. And we had a BIG yard! It was a couple acres and all yard work was a family project. I think we had a riding mower and 2 push powers and a couple trimmers. But I was married in that yard, so the work paid off. ;o)

Azzalea, my next door neighbor is obsessed with his yard. He had a fairly new gas mower but sold it and bought a rotary mower. He uses it often so the clippings are never too thick. He wanted it b/c he feels it works better and is lighter and doesn't leave tracks in his yard. He could endorse lawn products he is so crazy about the state of his yard (and it is very pretty), and that's what he would endorse. ;o)

No, some girl does mine and DS' She works in a law firm and does this on the side and does a fantastic job I have a huge backyard.

We have 1 1/4 acres and yes I mow it. We have a riding lawn mower and I have to say I enjoy it. I put on my IPOD and off I go. It's relaxing to me.

I mow my own yard with a Neuton battery-operated mower. Love it. Light and quiet and cuts well, though not as well as a gas mower. Starts at the touch of a button.

Ours is about the size of a postage stamp so my DH or DS mow it and when they are done, they do the elderly couple's yard across the street, theirs is a postage stamp with trees. :-)

Yes, I mow our yard and have for all the years we have been married. I use a riding mower a Husqavarna, to mow our 3 acres of yard. For Christmas my husband got me a new Husqavarna. It is still in his warehouse and I have not seen it yet. I do not mow the roadside, either my husband or son in law mow it with the push mower. Now if I am sick one of them will mow it, but that is seldom. They mowed it when I had knee replacement surgery. When they mow, they use our big mower. I do like to mow, but it is tiring.

dh does it all now...we've tried to "landscape" as much as possible away...we try every year, to get rid of more....

I had to stop mowing about ten years ago because of back, knees, etc. problems. I found a man who did a good job and just came when it needed cutting, depending on the weather. I paid him monthly.

Five years ago I moved here to the Retirement Community and mowing, etc is included in the monthly maintenance fee.

I really miss mowing the grass, though. I always loved doing it.

I posted here mostly because of Judy's post. I have been sick for the last two weeks and reading her remarks is the first thing that has given me reason to actually smile and laugh-out-loud!

    Thank you, Judy.

I mow my own grass and my back yard is a nightmare to cut because it is always so wet. I have burned out many electric lawn mowers on that back grass. LOL

My friend Tom used to lend me one of his lawn mowers to cut my grass. He has a grass cutting business on the side and has many mowers. Sometimes he would cut mine when he was out doing his. Same for the nasty neighbour next door's husband. He will cut my front grass for me the odd time when he is cutting his own.

I never had a gas powered motor because I never had a place to store one. I don't have a shed or a garage. I used to haul my electric one up and down the basement stairs every time I wanted to cut the grass which was a PITA. LOL My friend works at a nursing home and 2 summers ago one of her residents had just moved in to the facility and her son was emptying her house. The woman asked if Kathy new anyone that needed a lawn mower and she said that I did. The woman's son brought an almost brand new gas powered mower over the next day and wouldn't take any money for it. He said he already had 2 mowers and didn't need another one and said his Mom didn't need the money. Very nice of them both.

My elderly neighbour across the street offered me the use of her sun room off the garage to store the mower in since she doesn't use it anymore. So now when I want to cut my grass I just have to go across and get the lawn mower.

I give Tom gas money and he keeps the lawn mower topped up with gas for me when he fills his own. I had a problem with the choke last year and hope to get that fixed so I don't break my arm trying to start the darn thing. I am not good a starting it at all. LOL That darn cord whacks me in the chest sometimes and it hurts!

I used to love doing yard work but not so much anymore. My grass needs cutting now but it is too wet out but I will probably have to do it this weekend. Backyard will have to wait as always until we get a dry hot spell. Giant weeds will take over then that horrible cycle of trying to keep up with the damp jungle will start all over again. LOL I can dig out those weeds until the cows come home but they still grow - the roots are so deep!

I am looking forward to seeing my front grass full of bright yellow dandelions and purple creeping charlie and violets. So colourful and I am sure my neighbours hate me for it but I think it is beoootiful. LOL What will they do when they can't spray their picture perfect lawns with those horrible chemicals anymore that make me break out in hives and don't allow me to breath?

No way, no how. That was supposed to be DH's job...but he didn't do it, so I hired a landscaper.

I did it for one summer, my kids refused to do it and my DH was too sick. Starting it, pulling the cord, doing the edges, then the main lawn was too much for me. I now pay a landscaper $27 to do it weekly. He starts next Monday.

DH mows and edges, I do all the weeding, watering and planting.
He tends to the roses, and I tend to the rest of the flowers.
We have found our own niche, and just do what we enjoy.
Works really nice. I am lucky.

Old uncle had a rider and a push-type gas mower - and they were sold at the sale.

Landlord's a sod farmer, so he has mowers of all sizes and he cuts around the house and down the lane, whenever it needs it. Clears snow when no grass to be seen, as well.

Last year I had a substantial number of squash seedlings come up as volunteer plants from scrap ones that I'd thrown on the garden, so offered them to neighbours. A local farmer came with young son, who was quite involved with the digging and putting into their pans.

They didn't have room for many, and gave me a lovely piece of rhubarb cake and a small basket of strawberries in trade. Next day I dropped off some more plants at their place, as they'd got so few ... and they appreciated that, as the farmer's brother, when cutting the lawn that day ... had also chopped off the squash plants that they'd planted the night before!

Doesn't life have its funnies, though?

Denny mows our....He's going to do it tomorrow...he changed the oil and sharpened the blade today...Last week he had to take a tire off to take it in and have it fixed. It was flat.

I've mowed it a couple of times. But it about beats me to death...Our yard is lumpy...We have a Harrow to pull behind the mower that will help the yard if he'd just use it more than once.

It takes about 6 hours to mow all of it.

We used to pay the mow and blow guys, mostly to sit under our large tree and drink beer. When the tree roots started picking up the sidewalks, patio, etc. about 10 years ago, we tore out everything and now have (mostly curb shopped) brick paths with native plants and some succulents. We had our pool demolished over a year ago and are doing the same with the back yard. Linda

I mow my own - best exercise that I can get for an old geezer like me. I do not use a self-propelled mower, and therefore, have to push my mower over the yard, and that's where the exercise part comes in. I have about 1/2 acre to mow. The back part has a slope that is fairly steep in places. I'l.l begin mowing about 2 months after the end of snow shoveling We had snow at 3 AM this morning. The ground was warn enough so that the snow did not stick.

I used to mow the lawn all the time, but now that we have teenage sons, they do it! I'll still mow the front lawn because there's not that much of it, but we have a lot of back lawn so I leave that for them.

I don't believe I've ever mowed the lawn, certainly not as an adult. I'm afraid of the lawn mower for some reason, I don't even like to be outside when it's on.

Used to all the time, now only occationally. My asthma is the main reason, but now that I'm on Singulair I don't have as many problems, as long as I don't get a cold. Alex does it most of the time and sometimes I hire someone to do it for me. Like last Friday, didn't have time to mow the backyard before Lauren's party so I called around and found someone to do it. Wish I could afford to have someone do it all the time, but can't right now.

We live in an apartment building. Last summer, DH offered to mow my parents' lawn. It's a city lot, but pie-shaped, so actually it's a good size.

They were very appreciative, and Wally (step-father) didn't mow it all year. He kept calling DH his landscaper. DH needs the exercise. He puts his MP3 in his ears and loves doing it.

He'll be doing the same this summer. I plant the flowerbeds and planters for their deck.

For years I had the kids down the street do it for $20 - this was ten years ago. They graduated and moved away and I decided that to pay what it would cost for pros, I'd do it myself.

Bought myself a small riding lawn mower (paid for itself years ago) which mulches so I don't have to bag it. From start to finish when it's hosed off and put away, it takes me exactly one hour. I'm out there literally at the crack of dawn to beat the intense heat we have here in the summer. In the northwest, we have long hours of sun so I have to cut it twice a week or it will get incredibly long and too thick.

Once a week, DH uses the weed eater and trims back what the mower can't quite reach. It works for us! I put on my ipod and it helps a great deal with the boredom factor.

By mid fall, when I can quit cutting the grass, I'm really done with that twice a week chore but I only get sick of it really by the time I can quit doing it anyway.

Yes I mow. Always have. My husband does it some and the kids but they don't always do it to suit me so I like to do it myself. I like mowing and the exercise is a plus.

Not once since the " garter snake ball incident" 5 years ago. I won't even walk in the grass now. Once in awhile Miss Tootsie will run around the yard with a snake in her mouth as happy as can be. It sure is a good little refresher on the snake situation! Kathy

I have never mowed a lawn-ever. Not that I can't, I just don't. I had a father or brother that did and now I have a husband and two strong boys.

There's plenty of other things for me to do.

Maintenance dept. does ours. Mow, edge, blow. Trim shrubs in springtime and weed original beds. Part of our HOA $$$ Love that we don't have to do it in the hot and humid Florida summers.

I mow our large lot with a riding mower. It isn't so bad as long as the mower cooperates. I have an old snapper that does a pretty good job. I also use a battery powered weed eater to get the edges. I hated dragging the cord all over our lot.
