Should I open my big virtual mouth?
Comments (10)I too encountered a problem like this, only it was in real life. My church organized a one day only of classes you could choose from to learn basic but classic lessons you should know how to run a house. They offered free classes such as, Knitting, Basic Pie Crust Making, Mending, Sewing, Couponing, Canning Jam, ect.. I chose Canning Jam sinceI had watched my Mom can when I was a child, but wanted a refresher course. The lady told us she was self taught (Red Flag #1), that she red up on some of the older methods from our local Library (Red Flag #2) and by this time I was concerned and uncomfortable. Then when she hot packed them and said to leave them on the counter for a couple hours to "seal them" (Red Flag #3), asked if it was safe (full well knowing it wasn't), she said no one in her family has gotten sick yet and that her grandmother did it that way for years. I was upset and sick about this. Here this woman was endorsing an unsafe method to 20 women who didn't know any better. I tried asking her if she was sure that this was safe (in a wussy nice way) saying I remembered my Mom HWB canning them to seal it, but she brushed me off saying if I wanted to I could, "just to be safe". That is where I SHOULD have said "No, it IS safer. The Extension Offices say so and so do all of the new canning books" ect. But I didn't and even my best friend was sucked into the open kettle method. I took her straight to the web and my newest and latest BB canning book and showed her that it is never safe. I feel so bad and awful that so many could hurt their families even though they were just trying to do some good. I am now a total fan of just speaking up and saving some one from being very sick of botulism or worse....See Morei know ya all are going to tell me to shut my mouth but....
Comments (2)on the south side would be the best place, and not just because it means you have to mow less! :) that's where i'm putting mine because the south side of the house gets the best sun exposure. i don't have a compost pile either, this year i am buying my compost. hopefully i will have enough spare cash this summer to build my own bins to make it myself for next year's garden. the lowe's website (do you have lowe's out there? home depot?) has detailed, illustrated instructions on how to build your own compost bins.......i was thinking of using those instructions, though i'm sure there are several sets of directions in various places online. oh yeah, the mulched up clippings from your grass are what should go in the compost pile. i'm buying compost, peat and topsoil this year to fill my garden beds. i have three 4'x12' beds and two little 2'x3' beds, the sides are untreated pine. the sides are nailed together and supported every 4 feet on the long sides with a 2' length of rebar driven into the ground on the outside of the bed right against the wood. i duct-taped the top oo the rebar so it doesn't scratch me. it might not have been completely neccessary to enforce the sides, but this way i won't worry about it, and rebar is very cheap :) the beds i built are pretty close to the house......the edge is about 15' from the edge of the porch. they all run north to south, tallest things like corn, trellised tomatoes on the north end (closest to the house) and lower things like strawberries, carrots on the south end (farthest from the house). don't every worry about sounding silly, everyone on these forums is so kind and helpful and patient. there's no better way to learn than to ask questions.....i asked about a million before settling on how i wanted to set up my garden! welcome :) what are you thinkinf of planting?...See Morehusband always wants to fight
Comments (54)Nancy9429, My husband was getting worse since married. He did exactly what yours has been doing. For many years of married, I was now starting talk back out loud and told him "you were try yelling real loud to over what I am saying?! Stop doing that. You said you hate me? I do not hated you but inside of me thinking you are an enemy. If you do not like here, pack and leave. " He has getting better since. Good Luck! "Im am truly just exhausted, and this is not the example I want our sons to have and most people would not even understand how this could have gotten so out of hand...... It feels like he just is such a manipulative, bully... he always shouts me down if I try to speak up for myself or defend myself, that way I can't be heard over his booming voice and I can't state what I want to say.... He will just keep repeating in a very LOUD voice some inane subject that makes no sense, but renders my sensible statement unheard... oh well, I do plan to put together an exist strategy, it's just so difficult when he keeps your broke."...See MoreMy dog has "granuloma" sore from licking
Comments (6)My dog has had all kinds of lick sores/spots/hair loss, etc. She is now 8 years old, and we FINALLY have it under control. Here are my tips: 1) Make sure your dog does not have fleas/be sure the flea medication works. One of the worst bouts we had was b/c the vet did not check her for fleas (just gave her a steroid shot and cleaned it and gave us meds), and the (cheap) drops she was on did not work. Needless to say, I was angry and changed vets. 2) Look at changing foods as food allergies and skin allergies often come together. Grain free helped my dog a lot. The best one she is on is the one now, though, is this one: Purina One Sensitive. She has had WAY less issues on this one than she ever has. Obviously, different ones work for different dogs. 3) Fish oil is a HUGE help. You can use human fish oil. I use the Costco brand. She is 75 lbs and gets 2 daily. I can tell a difference if she does not get it. 4) She gets daily Benadryl, too. I hate doing it, but it helps her a lot. 5) Shampoo is very important. Frequent baths during bad times will do more good than harm. This shampoo has been a miracle-worker (from my new vet)! Unfortunately, it seems to no longer be available. It looks like the same manufacturer may have alternatives, though. Allergroom Anyway, these are the things that helped me with my dog. It is a lot of info, but I hope to save you some years. I wish I had known all this 5+ years ago. :)...See Morequirkyquercus
