Backup Sump Pump

Has anyone used or heard of the plug and play backup sump pump kit. Unlike other pumps, this one is placed outside the sump pit. The concept seems to make a lot of sense to have it outside the pit to avoid continuous exposure to dirty water, debrs. etc. We have a french drain system in our basement and the current sump pump is over in one corner. This company offers a residential pump RH-1400 is powered by a heavy duty DC motor. The pump comes with a vertical float switch instead of a tethered float to eliminate the risk of a stuck float inside a pit. Each pump kit includes a high impact battery case to protect battery. The product is from a company called Radon Mitigation & waterporrfing concrete sealer co in Shelton, CT. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm tired of worrying every time we have a thunderstorm that the power will go out and we'll risk flooding again.

I think a backup pump with it's own piping and wiring is a good idea. My neighbor was recently away...the pump came on, but the hose from the pump developed a tear....water all over...had to tear out the walls in finished basement, etc.. A backup pump with it's own piping would have saved her.
I've heard of pumps with battery back-up and it makes sense. I really don't know any good brands.
The thing that bothers me from what you are describing is..."a back-up pump outside the pit." I don't know what you cellar is like, but it sounds like the water would have to rise about 5"-6" before the pump would kick on. That is the reason for having a pit...the water drains into the pit and is pumped out before there is any accumulation of water on the floor. I'm assuming you have a full basement??

OK, option 1 is not really an option. I guess I would prefer option 2 as long as there is no harm in having an extra check valve in the mix.

The period it operates from is directly drivein by how large a battery (amp-hours) you care to purchase. It is even possible with the correct setup to parallel batteries for longer operating time. The discharge side of things is simple, the charging side for paralleled batteries is a little harder.

The main concurn is risk of concentrated gas being ignighted by spark or flame. If the crawl space has enough ventilation to prevent condensation,it should be enough to prevent concentration of gas. IF the charger came with the pump or if you use a proper charger desighned to be continusly connected,the following is true. No measurable amount of gas is produced during standby mode. You should fully charge battery before placing it in crawl space. When and if there is a primary pump or power failure,you should open crawl space doors or otherwise ventilate until problem is fixed. Once primary is restored,it would be wise to fully recharge and test battery outside crawl space. Needless to say,all 120 & 12 volt connections should be tight to prevent arcing in the event charger gos into recharging mode. You should find comfort in the fact we rarely if ever hear of an explosion resulting from charging a battery. The few explosions I have knowledge of were all caused by a short circuit directly on the battery ( ex= booster cable improperly connected).
