Gas Dryer Vent

Not sure if this is a plumbing question, but here it goes:

I am redoing my basement and installing walls. Can the exhaust of a dryer transition to an oval duct so it can fit into a 2X4 wall. And can it made a 90 degree turn from the dryer and go vertical 7 feet to get into the ceiling joist area, and run horizontal about 7 feet and then exit the side of the house?

Follow the dryer recommendations for maximum vent lengths with number of elbows.

I can tell you that you must not increase the ID size or cu inch if you use oval or try to use rectangular duct because the velocity will decrease and lint will collect.

You have no issues with length as long as you use the correct hood, duct, and figure in elbow to the lenght chart. See the attached site

I didn't replace an Oasis set, but if I'm not mistaken it's an HE toploader? If you are looking to stay with a TL I would recommend the GE Harmony. I've had one for about 3 years now and I just love it. It doesn't have a traditional agitator so you can get tons of clothes in it. I haven't had any problems (well, except for when I forgot to hook my hose back up and flooded the laundry room, but that was my bad!) and it works great. I'd get another one in a minute.

Seems like a costly way to get a little heat for the cat. Have you considered one of those electrically heated pet sleeping pads? They run at a very low (safe) heat, almost feels impercetible when you touch it, but make a good place for sleeping. Any big pet store should have one. They cost very little to run. You might want to offer a small amount of high quality cat food (dry) to meet the extra caloric needs during harsh weather and to decrease the amount of energy needed to forage. Also, if you can set out very hot water once or twice a day, that will help. It will cool rapidly, but be drinkable while it does. Use plastic bowls so they don't break when frozen (even low plastic food storage or sandwich boxes will work just fine). With all stray cats, try to stay safely separated from them (no contact) to reduce chance of a bite that might expose you to rabies. Of course, if you decide to adopt and bring the cat under care, then you will need to trap and take the cat to a vet for a health exam. After that petting and grooming and touching are just fine. Never take a new stray to the vet in your car unless it is confined in a secure pet carrier - while they may seem tame enough out of the car, once the engine starts that could change and you don't want to be trapped inside a moving vehicle with a desperate cat. Looking for a new dryer for long vent application

If someone is trying to sell you a dryer, for long run applications, that is not a true statement. Beware of of that. All dryers are made to dry clothes at a cirtain speed, and to a spec sheet. If they were to change the speed of the motor, it would just use more energy, and get less drying as the speed and the finns on the impeller are disigned to move x amount of air at a speed that the heat will dry your close in a specific amount of time. For instance, it will move 135cf per minute, more than that your dryer is running long times and not drying properly. Now that I have said all that, what you need to do, is contact a venting service, that can come and look your system over, and you said you had only 2 90's and 50 feet, I have had them over 100' and 8 90's, and we installed on inline 4" fan/housing in the duck, and had a power line connected to the dryer, so when the dryer started up it also powered up the discharge fan/housing installed down line to help move the air, but also you have to install one that will not change the speed of the dryer motor discharge. Your local venting installer, some of the furnace firms have people that are fully experienced in this sort of addition, or long venting problems. Hope this helps you. Brent@CanBC

For what it's worth, my dryer vents to the top step of my deck and has since the 1970's. I don't mind since I use unscented laundry products and don't smell anything. The only down thing about it is that the dryer lint accumulates on the wood and I have to brush it away periodically with a scrubbie pad. I'm used to it. I don't want to relocate it. The less I have to mess with this solidly built house, the better. It has no effect on the wood except for the lint. It actually melts the snow on the steps so I have one less thing to shovel in winter.

The periscoping vent would appear to address the issue, it looks thin enough to fit into a 2x4# wall.

Ok, here's my question: I have an electric dryer and was considering using a second flapper type thing - a draft blocker in the line, it's a weighted door that opens when there's dryer air flow, and closes when there's not, to theoretically reduce heat loss/cold air intrusion. I noticed on extremely cold days there was frost round the pipe where it joined the outlet. I don't think it's correctly taped (they used duct tape not foil tape) and they've also used flexible corrogated aluminium ducting in parts, also a dust trap in part) which may have allowed for some moisture.

They'd done away with an existing vinyl duct and run this one through the garage which does have the added benefit of a little heating of that space for free; but is this second door/flapper a good idea/permissible in most areas? I've attached a link.

Whilst on the subject, what do people think of the covers or anti-vermin screens you can get for these things? I am pretty conscientious when it comes to maintenance, I imagine they could be hazardous when you use these things if you don't keep them clean.
