I love the liquid too. I also make some powdered (the same ingredients without the water) to use in my whites. I'm amazed at how soft the towels and t-shirts are, and I just line dry them outside, or on a drying rack indoors. I literally never use the dryer.

Since adding washing soda to hard water softens the water, I think it's safe to assume the washing soda makes the clothes softer.

Instead of adding more soda, I would decrease the Borax, though.

ummm..wonder if adding a bit of the soda would help the jeans i just bought from woman within..already washed them 2-3 times and still rough...of course it could be the chinese fabric!

Ivamae, Sunlight washing bar soap is available at Walmart, and our local Food Basics. Pretty much everybody as "Linda" bar soap as well which is an Italian brand. I've used it, and it works well.

Laundry bar soap is normally found in the laundry detergent isle nearby the A&H Washing Soda.

Adding vinegar to the laundry would also help to soften the fabric/clothes and keep their colors vibrant. The smell goes away when the clothings are dried.

Much of the softening comes simply from adequate rinsing which these days a lot of people don't do. The buildup of residues in clothes makes them stiffer.

Borax is a water softener/conditioner. And using a dryer fluffs the clothes so they're less stiff which equates to many people as softer.

Baking soda is said to soften clothes too and many people use a cup of salt in the wash water to soften clothes.
