red oak floors look too pink
Comments (4)Turning red oak 'gray' is a real skill. A high-end NWFA Certified Sanding/Refinisher can get this done. They are normally the most expensive guys in area and have a wait-list that is several months long. But they are worth it. Your oak floors can be sanded down to raw wood, they can then be bleached (this is a process that can cause a little bit of damage to the surface because it is so aggressive) and then stained 'gray'. It is a long and very expensive process but when finished it can be stunning. As to the bleaching process, it goes deeper into the wood than stain which might mean the next sand and refinish (in 20 years) will have to go a bit deeper to get past the damaged wood. This deeper sanding means the floors will lose quite a bit of 'life'. It could carve off as much as 20 years from the floors. Solid hardwoods should have 60-80 years worth of life. A bleaching event (which is often needed to get red oak to turn gray) could reduce the life-span to 40 years. Comments (38)I ended up going with special walnut. One coat with a satin water based poly (not shiny). We love it. After the floor stainer put samples down of the lighter colors it really did look pink. I feared having my whole house “being ruined” so I went with the “safer” color and I couldn’t be happier. Someone gave me the advice that most of your hardwood floors will be eventually covered by area rugs anyways so no need to stress! The picture was taken at night with overhead lighting on. Not the best time to take a photo but you get the idea! Good luck!!!...See MorePink blocker under special walnut? On red oak
Comments (11)If a brown dye or stain is too red for your liking you add green to correct it. If the substrate is reddish then a greenish brown dye will give a more intermediate final color. Remember that it is incredibly difficult (impossible for mere mortals) to judge color without follwing the entire finshing schedule-- your sample boards need to be sanded in the same way and to the same grits, and all topcoats need to be applied. Color correction by applying a toner (a colored finish coat) as part of the finishing schedule is often successful, and can be done at the end of the process if your initial choices didn't quite work, adding red if the brown is too green, or green if the brown is too red....See Morestacys
