be careful about letting anyone "pry it in"
...we did that and cracked the corian, then had a slow leak in the dishwasher that we couldn't get at to fix...so ended up with buckled hardwood floor...and eventually met all these great people here as we embarked on the whole reno!!...which was by then overdue....the worst part was putting up with the cracked corian over the years this unfolded!

I'd call the contractor back and have him fix the problem---which is the cabinet height. DW height isn't the only issue when cabinets aren't standard height, it's just the first of a long list of problems waiting to happen.

Fix the problem, not the symptom of the problem.

My dishwasher seems to protrude out from under my cabinets. We just got it about a year ago after our old one died. The old one seemed to sit further back into the cabinets, but this one comes out more and I don't like it. I don't think there is anything I can do about it though. :(

Consider Fisher Paykel DW drawers

My kitchen countertop is too low as well. The solution is to buy a dishwasher that is ADA compliant (Americans with Disabilities Act). They are low enough to fit. I know that both Miele and Asko make them, because I've had both. My Asko worked well, but died abruptly and much too soon. I now have a Miele (for about a year) and it's great.

It is true that the F&P dish drawers have a very wide range of height adjustment - several inches. They will probably work for you.

My aunt just went through this...the previous owners retiled the floor just before they sold it blocking in the twenty year old DW. It died and my aunt had to have the tile floor taken up as well as a lot of underlayment and even the old linoleum waaayyy down there to get the new DW in. Her new DW is in, but she still needs the tile reinstalled. We were joking with her about whether she could see into her basement through the hole.

Thanks for all the advice. I bought my now melted DW from Sears and it is only 4 months old, so they are going to replace it but I will have to stick with what they carry. I have to wait 'til Sat for the service tech, but I went to the store and my measured my current DW @ 34 1/2 and the Bosch which was right on 33 7/8. I am not sure how they got the GE in there, but the Bosch is definitely smaller. I was looking at the DW drawers, but I only have a choice between KA and Kenmore and I am not sure I would be happy with either of those. Would everyone please say a small prayer for my cabinetry and granite and we'll see what happens Saturday :) - Judy

Mostlylurking, I ordered my Bosch dishwasher through Sears in Nov. of 2006, so perhaps you can get the one you want afterall. I absolutely love my Bosch dishwasher. We almost always use the "quick wash" setting, which only takes 30-35 minutes & saves on water. Good luck!

KA dishwashers are a little more forgiving regarding built up floors, usable to a 33 3/4" opening, so taking out the flooring under the DW may be a reasonable option. I have built up tile floors with no flooring under the DW, and the KA worked for me, barely.

Sears definitely does carry Bosch. It's a good choice if you can get it and install it. I've had Kitchenaid and Whirlpool. I would get a KA again, but not Whirlpool. KS is the upper end of the Whirlpool line -- better features and quieter, wsahed better too.
