With the nachos & beer gang, I'd definitely go with something more sturdy than seagrass anything. Your room sounds really wonderful and I'm disappointed that you're not posting pics of it. If it were me, I'd look for a sturdy wood coffee table that'll stand up to feet being propped up on it . . . not to mention beer cans. Maybe something with storage. I found a cool soapstone and iron coffee table for our family room a few years back and it takes lots of abuse and still looks great. You can see it, although not completely, in this pic. Since I took this pic, we've put a new big flat screen tv in there and moved DH's Mission-style recliner in, too. It's the most comfortable chair I've ever sat in and we all love it. I haven't been out looking at coffee tables in several years but I'll bet that you can find one with a stone top of some sort that might look great with your room. Please take pics for us, will you? It sounds like a fab room and I'd love to see it when the chairs and all are in.

AMCK, the advice that Lynn gave was right on the money. With having all those men, chips, beer, etc....you will need a large enough space to put it all. The stone is a great idea. I have also seen some in granite as well. The trunk may have some leather strapping on the top,( and they are often long and narrow)and may not be nearly as solid as the one the Lynn showed. If it's DH's room, let him pick and just give a wee bit of guidance. I agree with Lynn that you want something to put your feet on and not worry about... and I think you also want something you can put your feet under. A trunk is fine beside the couch for storage but I don't like it in front of the couch 'cause you can't stretch your feet out. Men, of course, need even more room to stretch out as they're taller.

If it were me, I'd look for something on Craigslist that doesn't cost a bunch. Then if they leave beer rings on it despite your piling coasters all over the room to heck with it.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Lynn, my mind had been reeling around glass,wood,wicker,seagrass & trunks, and I had never considered stone.

Wish I'd had a pic to help visualize what would fit in the space, but we haven't taken any of that room yet and I'm only there on weekends. Weather permitting, the sofa & chairs should be delivered Sat. The banquette is still under construction.

Oceanna, DH has most definitely had the upper hand in furnishing this room - much to his delight! GW'ers, however, swayed us to the black beadboard for the wetbar area. I posted several months ago asking how I could still retain some of the cottage flavor in the Men's Den, and that was suggested. I was initially concerned about black w/ the brown concrete floors. But the black/brown is working because of the creamy walls, the polished floor and lots of natural light from sliders and 3 large windows.

If anything more comes to mind regarding table choice, let me know. I will try to get pics soon.

A coffee table with drop leafs? There are some sturdy ones and would give you extra room when the gang is around. Also choices for keeping with your design.

That way you can move it easily to clean around it... or move it if you need to stuff in a few more chairs... or just because.

Our first coffee table came with wheels, and then we added them to our current Crate & Barrel table. Adds a lot of functionality, and I don't think anyone notices them as a decorative sore point. I think they cost $5.

Since it's a man's room, have you considered something with a stainless steel top? You can add ss accents around the room like lamps and such. I love the trunk idea but I just keep on thinking of all the glass rings on the wood of any trunk or table.

I really like the idea of wheels, I'm assuming they could be locked when you wanted to keep the table parked.

I groaned when I read emagineer's suggestion about a drop leaf table. We had one before we moved - 6 yrs. back - that we gave away when I got a glass topped one for this house. It was sturdy wood, and would have worked well down there.

Stainless is another option I had not considered. It would have to be something that would go with mission style furniture. Don't know that I've seen anything but more modern styles around here w/ stainless, but will look around.

Oceanna, I scanned the Craig's List in my area and came up dry. I've never purchased anything from CL, but I guess it's one of those things that you have to check regularly and pounce on something when you see it. I know folks on this forum have found great stuff through that source.

Trunks as coffee tables are called toe-smashers in my house. I've gone through three. :-) There's gotta be at least a little bit of room underneath for the toes to go. While storage is a nice idea I also found it a PITA since if I wanted to get something from the trunk I had to clear everything off the surface to open it. I would rather have drawers or even a lower shelf I could put flat baskets on (maybe those tailored leather baskets/deep trays?). I rather like something along the lines of the Map Table from Pottery Barn in a satin black painted finish, if you want to bring some of the black from the bar area over here - it's severe enough to play well with Mission furniture without being matchy-matchy at all:

I don't think the ottoman-with-tray-for-"stuff" routine is a good idea for the sports-and-beer crowd. It's just asking for something to get tipped over.

As for the glass rings, we have not had problems with tables and nightstands with good quality finishes - although I have my DH trained pretty well, there are a couple of my goonier friends who will set a sweating glass down on a table right next to the coaster. We put our feet up on the coffee table too (barbarians! LOL)... this is why I bought an old table with the top wrapped in old copper sheeting, because the more it gets bashed up the better it looks! ;-) However, if this is expected to be a major, major problem, a tile-topped table is right in line with the Mission flavor of the furniture. This one is quite pricey but it gets the general point across very well:

I love the tiled table. Have you thought about doing something yourself. Maybe finding a good table you like and then redoing the top in either tiles or stainless yourself? You can even add the wheels.

And -- just to add a suggestion -- if you do put anything on the table -- corral it onto a tray for easy-and-fast removal ......

I also like the table from PB. It appears to be the right scale for the room and the furniture, and I think the black ties in nicely with the bar and banquette. And that is the sticky part for me, and why I was asking for help - I want to have the room look like it was thoughtfully furnished but not too matchy. Something like that may do it, and teacats' suggestion to have a tray on it may help keep it nicer, longer.

I like the idea of doing something creative with tiles or stainless, but if I put anything else on the Project List, I'm afraid DH will run away. He's working on the banquette in between waiting for primer and paint to dry on the window seats he built for the upstairs sunroom!
