Post a pic of your cherry cabs and tile above backsplash

Any suggestions for a tile above the backsplash for my kitchen. We have cherry cabinets (brown tone as opposed to red) and I dont know where to begin. The last house had cherry and I did simple white tiles with hand painted florals randomly placed. I had Cameo White Corian countertops and the white tile blended well and was a clean look.

I have moved and am ready to tile above the backsplash, but need some ideas and suggestions. Pictures would be most helpful. Thanks.

There are so many different ways you can go--depending on your countertops, cabinet style, paint, etc. Don't rush it but take the time to find something you can really love.

Here's a link to several pics of my brown-rather-than-very-red cherry cabs (Brookhaven's Knotty Cherry) and the backsplash I designed for it. I found the tiles themselves at Interceramic Tile, although I'm sure they can be found many places. In my "Before" kitchen, I used to have cream colored 4x4" field tiles with flowered Mexican Talavara tiles scattered throughout the kitchen randomly. It sounds similar to what you had. But, with our newly done kitchen I didn't want to be locked into a specific few accent colors. I went neutral instead, as you can see in my pics. It's working out great for me like this. During the Christmas Season, the reds & green decs looked good in there. Now, during the Winter Season, I'm going with my New Mexican art, which also looks good. As we have a 13 y/o daughter, I still put up seasonal decs. I know my pastel Easter and Spring ones will look fine and not clash with colors in my kitchen . . . now. Same with Summer colors (bright flowers in pots, etc), Halloween and Autumn decs, too. Anyhoo, this was my rationalization for choosing the neutral tiles and backsplash. The bottom line is that I love being able to totally change the accent colors in my kitchen anytime I feel like it now with just my accessories.

Love the color of the Gigi Stix, but I think they're too small. I really like the lighter 1x2. You get a bit of modern glitz, but it's still a natural, organic feeling tile. Is that by chance Lunada Bay Sumi-E? I did a whole wall of that in my kitchen and am really happy with it! If it is Sumi-E, then they have a matte version if you don't like the shine, but personally I like it. Very pretty when the light hits it "just so."

Hey Techmom, Thanks for the input. From what I've read I think you're right. The tumbled marble is pretty holy and those will be filled with grout. The honed marbled that you speak of is the smooth travertine I mentioned above. I believe it's basically the same stone as the tumbled version except they polish it to give it the sharp edges and smooth surfaces then fill all the holes with epoxy. Nice thing about those is you can get really thin grout lines. A site I read said with the honed version you can use 1/16 grout while the tumbled version the grout will be more like 1/2.

Thanks so much everyone! We learned so much from this forum -- I had never actually heard of soapstone before coming onto this board and quickly was convinced. We did use Buck's and it was a perfect experience with them. Lisa_a -- YES -- we used SW Restrained Gold in our dining room. We actually meant to use Mannered Gold but the painters picked up the wrong shade. No big deal, though, Andi K: it is a Buck's Franklin edge on our counters. I think we asked them to go light on the Franklin edge, but I absolutely love the edging. It just feels natural. Our cabs are Kraftmaid natural cherry. I know some people have had issues with Kraftmaid, but a year later and we've had absolutely no problems. And Aliris -- we were definitely not your inspiration :) I just saw someone's photos the other day who had a very similar backsplash, but it wasn't me. I wish I had seen their bs last year when I first started out looking -- would have saved me dozens of trips to tile stores. I think their tiles were random but all the same size, whereas ours have some thin and thick. I really wanted marble for the bs and it was very tricky to find one that wasn't too cool. The danby marble has a lot of caramel mixed in with the gray. Although I'm thrilled to be done with the kitchen (finally), it's a little sad not to have the project to work on. This was a DIY project (save a few hired out areas like counters, floor installation and drywall). Oh well -- tons to do in the house. On to bathrooms and laundry room reconstruction!

plugmold - sitting on backsplash, or between backsplash & cabs?

My plug mold is mounted between my cabinets and backsplash at a 45 degree angle. I saw this on someone's posting and showed it to my GC who thought it looked great (it does). He had the cabinet installers rip a piece of maple matching my cabinets at a 45 degree angle and the electricians then mounted the plugmold. I especially like that I don't have to lean under and crane my neck to figure out where the plugs are. This technique also eliminates the knuckle-scraping problems mentioned above. It can also solve some wiring issues because you could fish wire across the back. I have stainless plugmold installed and love the way it looks.

My tiles are from the Crossville Palais Lycee collection. My cabs are cherry with a sienna stain from Decora.

Ours is diagonal tiles with granite accents.

Wow, great ideas from everyone. Some really lovely kitchens, too. I am leaning toward doing a tumbled marble, perhaps, in an earthtone (lt. tan, possibly). When I decide and the job is complete, I will post pictures.
