Comments (30)Just a note: PLEASE be aware of the decimal point in these various concentrations of Ivermectin. I have yet to use this method, but I am attracted to it because of the immense savings and because I feel manipulated and exploited by the vets and manufacturers for them to be charging as much as they do for the regular heart worm preventative. Do they think we won't know it is important if it isn't 120.00 for six months? Do they not realize that on many budgets this prevents rather than ensures dogs being treated? That being said, the dosage is tricky if you are not familiar with the divisions of a cc, percent concentrations, etc. I urge you to contact your vet regarding the dosage. If your small animal vet is uncooperative try your local large animal vet, they are usually more familiar with the livestock products anyway and every farm usually has a dog. The dosage difference between a .08% sheep drench and a 1% injectable concentration is 12.5 TIMES the concentration of ivermectin. That would be like you taking 25 aspirin! The 1% solution cannot be easily measured/used for average sized dogs without dilution by propylene glycol. Do not use water, as the ivermectin will not evenly disperse, making an accurate diluted measurement impossible. Higher doses are prescribed for things other than heartworm preventative, i.e. mange, etc short term. But though a fairly safe wormer, Ivermectin's function is as a neurotoxin and I would not want to habitually expose my dogs to that higher dose. A good dosage explanation is available here http://www.dogaware.com/health/ivomec.html This link's dosages were well in line with those given to my by my vet. Mine were a little lower because they were calculated for the exact weight of my dogs, (something else I like about doing my own dosage). It also addresses the collie sensitivity. Good luck and be safe....See MoreBringing my best friend with me...
Comments (25)Thank you, Joyful. I kept hearing croc, croc, croc, and I was just sure I was looking at a gator, gator, gator! But I started doubting myself as some of the people interviewed were so sure it was a crocodile. (Of course, they weren't identified as being any experts, so I don't know for sure that they knew the difference.) Because we do have crocs in south Florida, and they are making a surprising comeback after nearly being wiped out, it IS possible that there was one which ended up this far north. But I don't think it was the one they were showing on the news. If there were actually a croc AND a gator, I think the film footage I saw was the gator. That bulbous round nose and dark color just doesn't say "croc" to me. I keep checking the videos on You Tube, etc, to see if I can find one that actually shows a croc, but not so far. I wish there were more photos and films from the event. I would have liked to see it if the croc was actually there. That would have been very interesting. If I wasn't concerned about anything else, I would be concerned about that deadly bacteria in our lakes when the weather is this warm. And parasites. I let my kids swim in clear, cold springs that were closed off from the rest of the river (and river critters), but not lakes. And I discouraged swimming in the ocean, in most cases, for many reasons. When you've been in Flordia as many years as I have, you see some pretty scary things, even in knee deep waves. (I saw a very large shark once, trapped in a tide pool with only 2 feet of water in it. When the tide went out, it was stuck. And it finally slithered on it's side across the sandbar to get back to deeper water. I've also seen aerial shots of our beaches full of people, and all these sharks swimming near them that show up clearly from the air. I know shark attacks are rare, in the grand scheme of things, but I just couldn't bring myself to expose my children to that risk. (Or myself.) I have snorkled in the Keys, but I confess to having to check the area out carefully first, and I'm only comfortable when I can see for miles in every direction. And even that was years ago. I don't do it any more. My kids are grown now and do what they want, of course, but neither is fond of getting too carried away in the ocean. Splashing in the surf is about it for us, I'm afraid. I love to be ON the water in a boat or canoe, but not IN it. *shiver* Marcia Marcia...See Morenew to motorcycles
Comments (26)Hi Zephergal, I rode on the back of DH's bike for years with no interest in having my own bike. Then out of the blue, I started to think "Maybe I could do this myself" I took the MSF course and I was scared to death. The instructors were great, The bikes were sweet little 250 Yamahas but I had NEVER run a throttle in my life. Somehow I passed and got my own Yahamah 250. It took me a long time untill I wasn't spooked everytime I rode. But a year after I wobbled through the course I've stepped up to a Kawasaki 500. Hoo-wee! this is starting to be fun! I second all the good advice on safety gear. Look through your turns, the bike will go where you look. And believe that no one else on the road can see you. Every motorist that has ever been in an accident with a motorcycle will always say the same thing, "I didn't see him." I would recomend that you take the first available MSF course, find a bike that you can sit on flat footed, and then go ride! Have fun and be safe....See MoreHeartworm vs. combo med
Comments (10)Actually neither milbemycin nor lufenuron are metabolized in the liver, so Sentinel will not be "hard on the dog's liver." Both drugs are excreted unchanged in the bile to feces. Also, tapeworms, while common, are mostly harmless. I say mostly because a gigantic infection may cause disease in theory, but I have never seen nor heard of any disease attributed solely to tapeworm infestation. They are gross though. Finally, if you are using Heartgard, Interceptor, Sentinel, or Revolution then you are deworming for intestinal parasites every time you give it. None of the products kill tapeworms, but they all kill roundworms and hookworms, plus Interceptor and Sentinel also kill whipworms. So the statement that "but I dont think regular treatment for intestinal parasites is as necessary as the heartguard" is incorrect because you are in fact treating intestinal parasites every month by using heartgard. Advantage is to be used once monthly, not weekly. Quirky, your vet may be referring to Preventic collar, which is amitraz. It only protects against ticks, but seems to be very effective even for dogs that are exposed a LOT. The major downside is that amitraz is a powerful CNS agent and that if swallowed can cause serious toxicity. I wouldn't allow the Preventic collar near children, and I'd be VERY cautious about cats in the household as well, especially if the cats are known to groom their canine friends. I do know one vet who puts Preventic collar on her dogs only when they are running around in the woods, then she stores it safely out of reach of her pets and neices and nephews. Right now, it appears that Frontline Plus is working well on my dogs, but I do like to watch out for ticks. I am lucky that we don't have a lot of Lyme disease here, but we do have Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and having had it myself once, it is awful. So I use Frontline Plus year round. I also use Sentinel, but only because I get it free through school. Once I have to pay for heartworm prevention again, I'll switch to just Interceptor because I think Sentinel plus Frontline Plus is overkill and a waste of money. But for now, free is free :)...See MoreSummer
