and right on the heels of Mocha

And two weeks ago, Rusty tore a ligament in his back leg. He is 13 yrs old and 100 lbs. The vet says he is 101 in human years.

We just put down Mocha 2 wks ago. I am really reluctant to put down Rusty so soon after Mocha but we have to do what is right and fair. Gaaaawd.... Why did we get dogs so close to the same age and size? This is killing us...........

We will do what is right, and in the meantime, I will spend more than few nights on the floor with Rusty. Two dogs gone in two weeks? Its just too much too soon.

Oh Cindy, I am so sorry this is happening! We lost 3 cats within a 4 month span of time back in 2003 (our two older cats and our new kitten). It's never easy, but losing two (or more) in a short period is just exponentially more heart-wrenching.

Please know that many here at GW will be thinking of you and Rusty and will be sending caring thoughts.

Since no one else has piped in--I'm no tree expert, but I heel in most of my trees after buying them and before planting them, and your description is exactly how I do it. Just make sure the roots don't dry out and they have some nutrition coming in from soil (as opposed to sawdust). Carla in Sac

cowboyind, I like your approach. The factory mats must be around $100 for a set, and I doubt they sell the drive's side alone. My new pickup, a Colorado, has matching color (to the carpet) vinyl mats, and as you experienced, when I get in the truck with wet feet, the water sits there and can run off onto the carpet. I'll look and see whats available in a waterproof and absorbent form. As for wraping the couch in plastic, that would defeat the purpose/decore, but putting arm rest protectors on in the same fabric seems OK to me. That's what I'm looking for in the car application, some way to extend the good looks of the floor without going to high cost replacement of factory mats. In the old days when women work high heals, the car's floor really took a beating. That's not the case now in my home, still there's a wear spot developing after about 12,000 miles of use on the car.

How much does it cost to show a horse, or to shoe one, Cathy? Every horse show has entry fees, it regularly cost me $35-$50 to enter barrel racing events. Shoes? That depends. Just a clip and file costs $20, or $5 a foot. Cope's shoes will need to be removed, the hoof clipped and filed and the shoes replaced in about 2 months. That will cost me $45 ($20 for the clip and file and $25 to reset the shoes). This particular episode cost me $85 because I had to buy the shoes. Fortunately, they can be reused several times as long as he doesn't lose one, also known as "throwing a shoe". I have my horses done usually 4 times a year at $20 a visit, not so bad. With Cope's health issue right now, Ron will come every two months instead, until we can be sure he's alright. I will admit that farrier services are very cheap here, considering that Ron drives from farm to farm and the cost of gas. I know anywhere around cities or big "horse areas" the shoes I got Copenhagen would cost closer to $150. Annie

gellchom, all of your posts were great! I recently attended a training session through my work called "Win - Win" (I should remember the rest but I don't, LOL). We learned about four different types of personalities and yours is definitely BLUE (Which is what we strive to be). Sleepyhollows is definitely RED (Which is undesirable, bullyish). There is also GREY (Which is depressed, doesn't care, doesn't matter) and GREEN (Doormat, enabler). In each instance your responses lead me to the BLUE mode where you get the facts and communidate effectively. Blue also tries to not sweat the small stuff. In my own life I try to pick my battles wisely. I laughed when I read Sleepyhollows attack on the smoker outside of a restaurant. Your response was much more reasonable. BTW, Reds die earlier and have less friends. The group that puts on the training session is the Jack Parr Associates (not affiliated with the entertainer).

I am so very sorry for all that you have gone through lately. 13 is a VERY ripe old age for a 100 lb dog, but if you feel Rusty isn't quite ready to go and still potentially has good time ahead, there is an alternative to surgery that I wanted to let you know about. My dog, Tasha, tore one of her cruciates and both of her achilles tendons in her hind legs. After four surgeries, a lot of pain for her, and failure of the last surgery, I finally said enough was enough. I went online and found an orthopedic brace maker who specializes in custom orthotic braces for animals (he was originally a brace maker for human medicine). Tasha's been doing beautifully in her braces for several years now. The braces were very pricey, but they saved Tasha's life and gave her back her mobility with no more surgery.

If you would like to look into that option, you can check Tasha's bracemaker's website below. I wish you the best possible outcome for Rusty, whatever you may determine that to be.

So sorry to hear about Rusty. Like Laurie we used a brace when Spot partially tore his ACL 5 years ago. We used a different brace than Laurie. The fitting instructions call for x-rays but our Vet felt confident that he could measure the bone length without them. Spot wore the brace for about 2 weeks and has had very little problems since. About a year after the first incident he started limping a little and had to wear the brace for a few days.
