paint grade wood choices

I'm only having lower cabinets made, and keeping the upper cabinets for family sentiment (we have gutted the house, they are basically the only thing I have managed to keep)

I met with the cabinet maker's wife yesterday, and felt a little clueless about what kind of wood I want for my painted lower cabinets. They have everything, but she said paint grade maple or alder are what they use the most. Should I have a preference? I'm sure I will meet with them several more times, but I think we ended on maple yesterday.

Is there a good reason for one or the other?
