I think glass doors there would look cool, but the ones near the window will get dirty fast since they are over the sink. Since having all glass on the family room side will just make that cabinet look like a curio cabinet. BTW, my kitchen cabinets that are on the end by the family room has wood on the side and glass doors, and I don't really notice it. So either way would work. What do YOU want it to look like?

If you're going to use those cabinets sparsely enough to let the light come through, then, yes, by all means do all glass. If you're going to put in stacks of dishes and shut off all the light anyway, it'll look better closed in, glass fronts optional.

Glass sides will provide more openness and widen the room, but I'd think hard about how to resolve that corner cabinet, since its side will appear different from the others.

We have glass facing our sink and glass on the end of our hutch cabinet. I love how natural light flows through the cabinets. The glass facing the sink doesn't get dirty or dusty any faster than any other glass in our kitchen. I think the glass on the sides of the cabinets make them feel less weighty, less like boxes stuck on the wall.

One of the tweaks I still want to make is to apply painted bead board (the same color as the back splash) on to the back walls of the cabinets flanking the sink.

I would do it without question. I had the option of doing this in one of my cab sets positioned either side of a window and to this day I wish I hadn't been outvoted.

I had seen the idea in a photo and really liked it. I think it's classy, different, special. Unless you keep canned goods and cereals in the cabs.

Oh, and I meant to mention that if you're cramming your entire set of china and such into the uppers instead of a few select show pieces, you gain abt 1/4 inch more space inside of the frame, which can be significant, if you have bowls with protruding lips, etc.

I had never thought of this before (you clever clever people) but love the idea to allow the light to flow in from both sides. And I like the way it looks in the example posted above. If you have glass fronts you are already going to have to make them the "tidy" so may as well take advantage of the natural light.

another vote for glass. It would be very pretty. Pictures look like it is coming together for you. congrats and you must be getting anxious at this point!

I love glass on the sides. I remember this from Martha Stewart. I asked for this for 2 cabinets and my cabinet guy had never heard of this. Not sure why it is so unusual.. I think filtered light looks very pretty.

I think I'd like the glass on the sides in your kitchen....and now you all have me thinking about that option, as well! We are opening up our galley kitchen and both the upper and base cabinets at the entrance will be angled:

The angles our cabinet guy plans will be slightly different than the sketch. His top cabinets will not have just two sides that meet in the middle like a triangle....and I think they'll be bigger than you see there. Having said that, you can see they are still will not be large, so maybe having the sides of the top cabinets glass would lighten up the look?

Don't mean to "hijack" your posting (or "steal" your idea!), but thanks for giving me the idea and if others want to "weigh in", too, that would be awesome. We start the demo next week, and I'm a bit nervous about it all because our cabinet maker is old fashioned and just sketches on graph paper. I'd feel better if I could see his layout in 3D!

As an aside, I can't believe how clean and organized your being-built house is. Your builder must be very fastidious!

I was just looking at this kitchen re-do on TOH and thought of this thread. They put glass sides (leaded glass) on the exposed sides of all the cabs and it looks so pretty! A pretty great idea...

yep. i like it. i have three counter to ceiling cabs with side glass; the two by the sink (only one is visible) on the insides only and the outside cab has glass on the outside only.
