Lets talk lamp shades & I'm the grasshopper

I have always bought my lamp shades at home goods or the like. I have read here off and on about quality lamp shades. However, I'm not sure I would know one if I saw it. What makes a lamp shade good quality? Where would one look online? Is it sort of like wine and you know it will be at least decent the more you spend? Would you like to share pictures or info on your lamp shade and where you bought it?

I think there are a few things. One, what they are made from. Two, how well constructed they are to hold their shape. And three, how they are lined, which will impact the kind and amount of light you get.

And then of course all of the little details and doodads.

The best lamp shades I've ever used are those from Lake Shore Studios. their catalog provides some explanations as well.

SB, That primula is pretty! By adverse I mean not only a lack of sun, there are also the big trunk like roots growing many feet deeply into my property along with thick feeder roots and they immediately suck the ground bone dry after watering or rain creating a difficult, if not impossible 120' x 15' area that is not good for any kind of desirable gardening and very difficult to dig. Thats a lot of square feet being affected by neighbor neglect and on a city lot when space is always at a premium its a bit hard to swallow at times. I found that Salvia greggi which will take the dry conditions do surprisingly well since the tree leaves are not dense during their best blooming time and they are defoliating when the salvias are back in bloom in fall. A really big surprise is how well Silver King Artemisia does. I have lots of this growing in groups in the area. It stands tall and thick and adds some much needed bright silver interest lightening up the otherwise dark area. I wouldn't have guessed it would do so well. Cool season grasses like stipa varieties that go dormant in summer are also choices and I am having luck with hardy Lantana too. Of course all these bloom better in full sun but they are still attractive and able to take the conditions I am dealing with. What I am trying to get are plants/shrubs that will provide some height as well as visual size presence since its a transition zone that jumps drastically from low growing plants to this sudden and abrupt line of unattractive mismatched volunteer trees and messy undergrowth. Currently the effect is very jarring, like a 30 ft wall of blackness that feels and looks visually oppressive. I am on the downhill side which adds to the problem because my yard is much lower than the neighbors so eye level is distorted from his ground level to mine making it even harder to achieve a graceful visual transition. I'm planting on his side (with permission) to get some height. So many plants I've tried just end up seriously leaning east looking like they are attempting escape and further emphasizing the lopsided problem so I have to go back to the drawing board but these I mentioned have worked. Diana, that Lady Chomondely climbing your sycamore is stunning. In fact, that entire corner is inspired. Becky - I would love to have Lady Banks, but I'm afraid she would eventually get too big. I may, however, consider her for my porch once we get the siding taken off the house. Beautiful rose. And thanks again for all the great feedback everyone. Wow, this is going to be a tough decision. You guys aren't making it any easier ;-) Just when I think I've settled on one, I see another I want. I've decided to go to Mid City Nursery and Annies this weekend and see what's available locally. Good going, Celtic!!! Don't you feel so much better? My closet is one of the few areas that I have always been perfectly organized. To the point that my daughters make fun of me! I am not a slave to fashion --- and now -- I buy 75% of my clothes at GoodWill. But I do look good and have a good wardrobe -- not perfect -- but good. I have two rules when buying clothes -- Can I wear it with 3 other things that I already have? And does it fit into my "color" scheme? My basics are black -- black skirt- black dress -- black pants-- black blazer. I don't wear suits much -- I'm really a blue jean type of girl so those are all seperates but one suit would work. Then I add two black sweaters -- one crew --one cardigan. Then I add shirts -- a couple of white ones for starters. Then I add my color -- for me its red in the winter and pink in the summer. A little yellow and blue to break it up. I love jackets -- so I pair neat blazers with jeans and few shirts and the variety is there. When I shop at GW -- I never buy anything that I could afford to buy new. So I usually watch for better lines. Talbots -- Pendleton -- Nordstoms -- Jones of New York. I watch for fiber content -- I love silk and cashmere so those are key. And I look for things that I can "fix" --- change the buttons -- add some trim. And I really go in with a list -- I need a blue shirt. So I look for a blue shirt -- I may glance around for something else but knowing what you need -- helps eliminate buying mistakes. You don't buy a "green" shirt just because it was on sale. Good job! Keep it up! Cath

For container plantings, the general rule is you need a thriller, a filler and a spiller. For a thriller, that is usually the taller plant. I have used anything from a small shrub or a grass-like plant (dwarf purple fountain grass is a fave of mine to use), cordyline, cannas, and I often transplant it into the yard 2-3 years later when it outgrows the container. Or you can use tall salvias or anything else tall that blooms. For the filler you can use anything to fit the sun/shade conditions. Most of mine are in full to part sun, so I use coleus, heuchera, smaller salvias, impatiens, geraniums, or loads of other things, depending on my mood or color combo I'm trying to create. For spillers, those are pretty easy. Sweet potato vine is a nice chartreuse addition (but you'll have to keep it trimmed), creeping Charlie, million bells, bacopa. You can visit your local nursery and probably get other great ideas for combinations that will work well in your area. Also pay attention to water requirements when you put your combo together.

Thank you and especially thanks for the link. I needed that! It will take me some time to figure this out. This is my bedroom, the swing arm wall lamps are antique brass (needed to man up the room a bit). On the other side of the room in the corner is a non-descript floor lamp, a chair and soon a small reading table. I need to replace the shade on the floor lamp; itÃ¢ÂÂs disgraceful and has a dent. The room is a bit of a mix like the rest of the house. IÃ¢ÂÂm partial to drum shades but IÃ¢ÂÂm not sure if that will fly in here, need to tie in the headboard, wall mount lighting and the rest as best as possible. DonÃ¢ÂÂt want anything to frilly or bell-y. I know I want a cream colored shade with some trim of some sort.
IÃ¢ÂÂm stuck on a shape! I think I need a nice shade to counter some of the used stuff and make it all look on purpose.

Shade shape for this room???

If you have the lamp already, then the most important thing is that the shade go with the lamp.

I always take the lamp to the shade store and try them on ...it's the only way to know what the lamp really needs.

What Annie said - you really need to take the lamp to the store and try on several. Look at them with the light on too, as the color changes, and you'll see any texture in the fabric.

Most of our lamps are vintage or one-of-a-kind that my local lamp store owner has made, or I have taken something to her to make into a lamp. For me, picking out just the right shade is as much fun as finding the neat lamp base/having something made.

Nice shades can be expensive, especially when compared to Target or HomeGoods, but they last for years and really make a difference.

Ok Allison you canÃ¢ÂÂt go around saying that that you have one of a kind lamps or things made into a lamp without showing me pictures, I love that kind of stuff.
As for the lamp shade fit/style I was just going to do the same size-ish thatÃ¢ÂÂs on there already except maybe a different shape. Shows you what I know.
I did get off on a side track as usual this morning and looked on craigslist, there are some very cool vintage lamps way down south. Perhaps I need to look around a little before I decide on a shade for the floor lamp. A vintage brass would also look nice on the long dresser near the chair.
Allison, inspire me please!
