Beach house + Leather Sofa...Good Idea?
Comments (10)We have rules - but no one pays attention - and I have given up. I live in a house of men and I have learned to adapt. I bought a cheap Dacor hard leather set from BJ's Wholesale for $1000 in 2005 for my beach house. We had just purchased the house and I couldn't afford more at the time. Considering I got a sofa, loveseat, and chair I figured it would not last too long but would give me time to save some money. It in no way matches the comfort or style of my 2 bradington young soft leather sofas at home (which 3 friends also bought after sitting on). BUT - IT HAS ENDURED BEAUTIFULLY. Hard use? You bet. I never fussed over the stuff, my kids and friends sit sandy, wet and lotioned. I have 3 boys who are HARD on furniture and who love to bring their friends to the beach house (last weekend we had 19 boys there so both the sofa and love seat were slept on). Any way - it works. My sister's newer white slip covered sofa is trashed. When this set goes (and I think the frames will go before the leather) I will get BY but I don't know about the soft leather. I would suggest you find the leather sofa you love - get some swatchs from the manufacturer, and rub them with water, sand and lotion to see how they hold up. Bradington Young sent me samples when I was shopping. Good Luck!...See MoreWill I tire of a beach seashore theme? Show me your beach house!
Comments (12)Thanks to all! Really great suggestions! agree with many of the posters and my sofas are always solids. In my primary residence, I have a tone on tone damask and a woven solid and a solid green (in different rooms, of course). I always accent with chairs and pillows and accessories, BUT, because my primary residence is 18th century, mahogany, with a few whimsical touches, I really wanted the second home to be totally different than the primary residence. Maybe my title was misleading. The only fabric reflecting a coastal theme would be a pair of club chairs. The solid sofa is great, but I thought doing a pair of two themed chairs, translation: FUN, chairs, and the chairs would be the only themed pieces of furniture, would make me smile when I enter the home and put me in a vacation mode frame of mind!! Having said that, I am now rethinking the fabric only because I like, not love that fabric. I kept gravitating to it because it works beautifully with the green sofa. The greens in the crab fabric are perfect with the green sofa....so, now I am off hunting for fabric again. I really like greens and blues together. My PR colors are red, goldish- yellow and green. I have no blue in this home, so now leaning toward a blue and green color scheme and, perhaps, a geometric or a paisley. I do not want over the top beachy, but I do want to feel I am away from my home with subtle coastal touches. If this were my primary residence, I would not even be questioning the theme, but because this is a getaway home, I do want it to reflect the area and the laid-back mode. Planning to use paint colors and fabrics I would not think of using in my PR. I will let you know what I find and i am keeping all of your great thoughts and suggestions in mind!! I think the crab walk fabric is walking!!!...See MoreWhite Slipcovered Sofas
Comments (11)I have the white slipcovered ektorp sofa from ikea. We really like it. It looks great and the slipcover washes well and seems like it is well made and will last for a long time. I did buy an additional one so that I can alternate them but I don't think I needed to, in retrospect. I don't think it's the most comfortable sofa in the world, but it's not too bad. I hear they get more comfortable as they get more use - ours is at our beach house and doesn't get full time use, so that could be why. If you live near an Ikea store you might want to visit it and sit on it first. My boys get them very dirty - sand, suntan lotion, food, etc. and they always come out perfectly clean. To me the best thing is that you can replace the slipcover for like $50! If you get sick of white, you can get something else. We have another white slipcovered sofa from Crate & Barrell and it's somewhere around $350 to buy an additional slipcover and I actually think the Ikea slipcover is a better quality!...See MoreBeach House Slipcovered Furniture
Comments (4)If you are going to cover a sofa or chair you might want to buy something from your local Craigslist. You can find good quality if you look hard enough and then can either have someone make a slipcover that fits your choice or buy one online. Check out Ikea for sofas and slipcovers. They have both. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/living_room/series/...See MoreRelated Professionals
