Slipcovered sofas? (for beach house)

We are finally going to invest in some "real" furniture for our beach house. I'm wondering if those who have slipcovers like them, and if you feel they are worth the extra $$$. At one store that sold the Rowe line, the salesperson discouraged them; said you needed to dry clean the covers and you would do just as well to spot clean a regular sofa. We don't have small children but do like to promote a "care free" atmosphere there, so I thought slipcovers might be the way to go. Also, any favorite brands? I'm not a fan of PB upholstery, but would be curious about any others.
