silver or gold with oil rubbed bronze?
Comments (4)Hi Alicate. Q: Yet, isn't the ORB a more modern finish and therefore [shouldn't] the silver look the best? A:Well, it depends on what you mean by "modern". If what you really mean is trendy then yes, oil-rubbed bronze is sort of modern, but if by "modern" you mean the NEWEST finish, then, no, it's not trendy at all, since ORB is a finish that was first made popular about a century ago, when people were decorating with Mission & Craftsman style furniture in fumed oak. At any rate, ORB is only truly trendy if something that's been around for a decade or more--which, by now, it has--can still qualify as a trend. The really hot trend, however--at least hereabouts--is shiny brass, the same stuff that some people sent to a landfill fifteen years ago because somebody with a warehouse full of new brushed nickel doorknobs to sell told them them that their old brass hardware brass was "dated." My, how time flies! At any rate, if you were talking about doorknobs now, I'd definitely say go with the gold-tone, because as the dark finish coating on ORB wears off, what's left resembles--you got it!--brass anyway. Now, lamps & curtain hardware don't get as much use as do doorknobs, so their finish won't wear off as fast, but I'd still get the gold, and not the silver when it's time to buy new. Here's my real advice, though: get what looks good, not what's--according to somebody with something to sell--"trendy". Or "Modern". Pay no attention to popular buzzwords....See MoreWill oil-rubbed bronze go out of style?
Comments (17)I do think ORB will go out, because the market was TOO full of it. When I was looking for lighting, it was difficult to find anything else. Walking into store after store full of no other options made me want to find something different. The only ORB thing in our house is the front door knob/handle set. I noticed the other day that the top side of the knob (inside) is losing its dark finish...and not in a nice, soft, glowing way, but some of it looks like scratches, even though they're not scratches in the sense that they go into the metal so you can feel them. Like the rest of the door hardware in our house, it's an Emtek, which seem to be of good quality, so I wouldn't think that their finish is any worse than anyone else's. Of course, that might not happen on cabinet knobs since there is less surface area to wear....See MoreThoughts on oil rubbed bronze and glass knobs
Comments (16)Thanks all for your comments...a few more details...My style is very traditional...upstairs there are three bedrooms. Two are the kids rooms both decorated in pottery barn kids. Pink flowery pottery Barn kids in one with crystal chandelier and white girls furniture. The other decorated in more blues but pottery barn and still white furniture. Our bedroom is traditional cherry wood, sleigh bed, traditional furniture. Our master bath is or will be black and white theme but vintage black and white not at all modern. We really don't have anything In The modern style in our house..all traditional. The hall bath is really very basic beige so probsbly doesn't fit with glass knobs but don't want to make decision based on the hall bth. Also for ORB I feel like it can mix more easily with other metals like antique brass or even silvery tones but maybe I'm off there?...See MoreOil rubbed bronze OR brushed nickel cup pulls...?
Comments (20)RE: the inspiration white kitchen with ORB pulls, an article says the fridge is one the "other side of the island" ...? "with its oversized, four-stool island, eat-in breakfast niche, petite butlers pantry, and large walk-in pantry" and "Although spacious kitchens are now commonplace, kitchen designer Robin Amorello of Atmoscaper Design was pleasantly surprised when she received the plans for the Laughlin kitchen. "The family can do a lot of living in that kitchen," says Amorello. Still, the space forced her to make a compromise on one of the basic tenets of sound kitchen designthe "work triangle" created between the refrigerator, sink, and stove. "When we realized that the fridge would need to be on the other side of the island," says Amorello, "I broke the space into work stations rather than a work triangle." "...See Moregraywings123
