??? on Stone Enhancers for tumbled marble backsplash

Hi,

I was wondering if you can apply a stone enhancer or a sealer with a stone enhancer after the tumbled marble has already been sealed? The person that installed my tumble marble backsplash claims he sealed it. But my KD said the stone needs to be enhanced to help bring the colors out. What are your thoughts?

Find out which sealer he used, and let me know, and we'll take it from there.

Hi,

Thanks for your quick response and help. I think he (Jim) used Aquamix to seal the tumbled marble because that is what his store sells. But going to the Aquamix web site, there are a bunch of sealers. I know he used the oil based Aquamix sealer when he installed my granite but I don't know exactly which Aquamix sealer he used when he put in my backsplash (I wasn't there when he sealed it). I plan to call him on Monday and ask him about the backsplash sealer.

Jim who installed my backsplash, was also my fabricator for the marble bathroom vanity counter top and my kitchen granite. It is a family owned tile/stone store started by his granfather. He volunteered to install my tile when he was putting in my granite. He said he was a tile installer for years before becoming a fabricator, but his knees gave out. Now he said he has problems with his back. Clearly OT and adds very little to my problem at hand. But I guess my point is that I thought he was pretty reputable and this is why I trusted him for the job.

Thanks very much for that photo, monkeyjac. Wow, that is an amazing job they did with your seam. In my case the sink is centered on the island, with the widest part of the arch across from the sink and facing the family room directly. If I knew for sure that it would look like yours, I would have no concerns! This has actually been my hardest decision. I have come to think something like NVG could work best in my kitchen for a number of reasons. Not only does it complement both of my cabinet colors but I feel that as much as I love the movement granites, too much in a large space could easily overwhelm (there's a desk and bar area I'm covering, too). Thats something that my KD has cautioned me about as well and he loves granite with movement. Also looks like you put in the exact Artisan sink I'm considering. I'm between this or the Ticor. Found this on a FAQ About Using Stone in Your Home: TRAVERTINE Â Travertine is marble, except it is filled with "holes." To understand what causes the holes, think of it this wayÂwherever a river or stream was prior to the marble being quarried is where you will find travertine. Because of the holes, people can be scared off because travertine is generally thought to be more porous and not suitable for residential use. This is not the case, as all of those holes become filled in with grout during installation, giving it a very unique look. The same travertine can be used in two separate areas but appear another way just by using two different grout colors! Travertine can be purchased with the holes pre-filled, but in my experience with it, I don't recommend it. In general, the epoxy fill that is used has a color to it that does not look natural to the stone and it has a tendency to come out after a short amount of time in high traffic areas. Are tumbled marble backsplashes becoming 'dated'?

I think it depends on context. The "Tuscan" kitchen is dated. Marble has been used in kitchens for thousands of years. Use a different shape or size than the trend (i.e., not 4"x4"), with different details in the rest of the kitchen and it'll just be what you like rather than a datable look. To me, "dated" in kitchens means something that you can pin to a particular style that was being shown and installed at a particular time. Kitchens last a long long time. "Dated" in the bad sense is when you can still obtain something that was really popular 10 years ago but isn't being done anymore. That is, that you'd be doing a 2000 kitchen in 2010. It's okay if a 2010 kitchen dates to 2010. Your appliances will give you away anyway. But you want to avoid the near past to keep from being just out of style. There's now, retro, and never was (i.e., unique rather than following a design trend). Dated is the gap between now and retro. What's a now look? Mini-brick! So go for it, match your fireplace, let it look good with the granite, and be very happy knowing you're in style.

Just bumping. I have the same question of what exactly to buy. We bought some tiles at HD and the color was antique gold I think. I thought it was too orangey and I would like the chiaro or the noce better...but the gold is REALLY nice. I'm still undecided at present. Here it is wet with my new cabs I tried to make the pic smaller but I was the same size each time I reduced it!

I would imagine then that he also used the Aquamix for the backsplash, in which case, you should be able to go right over it with Aquamix's Enrich n Seal.

Hi,

Thanks again for your help Bill. If I use the Aquamix Enrich and Seal, will it still be able to penetrate the stone and "enrich" the colors since it has already been sealed twice?

Yes. Because they both have the same base, as you apply the new sealer, it'll loosen up the old sealer, allowing the new stuff to recoat the stone.

No prolem, main!! :-)
