Is it ok for the trim and cabinetry to be slightly different?

Instead of waaaay different? Kind of like trying to match blacks, when they are off (and they usually are) it looks wrong. Does the color of my trim have to be vastly different from the color of my cabinetry? Our trim includes the usual molding plus wainscoting plus a craftsman arch, so there is a lot of trim. And there will be a lot of cabinets. So can they be just a little different, or would it be better to do them all the same?

If you're going to have different, be deliberate, like it's meant to be. I have two cabinet finishes in my kitchen, one a deep cherry/walnut stain, the other, ivory glazed. One grouping of cabs are the perimeter, the other interior. With that said, I wouldn't recommend two different, but close colors.

If you are talking about trim and cabinets, I think that was a trend at one time. I have a small color disparity in mine. I have a taupe color and BM lost the formula for my original color and tried to match it. They could not, so I chose to go a few shades lighter for the cabinets than the trim as I could not pay for it to be done all over again and I wanted it to look deliberate, not a mistake. I love rooms with different tones, shades of white for trim, walls, furnishings and fabrics as if the inherited look is aged and patina'd.

Dawn, you are liven' my dream. I would love to have that many cats, and room for outdoor cats. But I know it's a lot of work. Our four keep us slammed, and we insist on no cat smell in the house so that's constant box cleaning. Regarding pellets, you can use the commercial bagged kind like Feline Pine or you can use stove pellets. Some shelters have 'em dropped off half a ton at a time. My vet assures me there is nothing bad in the stove pellets; they are pure sawdust. I have not used them, but have used Feline Pine and liked it. There is another bargain option not mentioned here, which is chicken feed, or what the industry calls "layer crumbles." They are extremely safe and work like wood pellets in that the urine soaks the pellets and they fall to bits go to the bottom. Poop stays on top for scooping. Because they are cheap and safe, I keep them on hand, and use them routinely in my porch box. Indoors, they give off a sort of vitamin-supplement smell that I don't care for. The scent does not travel, however, and the feed does contain the urine odor. I would not call this a clumping litter, though some do. And you can, theoretically, flush it. Pros of using layer crumbs are -- very little dust, safe for your cats, safe for the dump, and as environmentally benign, I guess, as any litter. I don't live in an area where you can compost, but I guess with the poop scooped, they would be compostable? Look for them in 20 and 50 pound bags at places like Southern States or Tractor Supply. My last 50 pound bag ran around $15, IIRC, so that is an awesome bargain. For anyone interested in this, I will post a good link below. Here is a link that might be useful: Link from Cats Adored

amw33629, I didn't post this yesterday as it probably won't help but I did pull out my kitchen mags and do a thumb through and I found a couple of examples. Kitchen Makeovers Fall 2008 Again a vintage white stove, 18" white dishwasher and white fridge in an alcove away from the cabinetry with no cupboard above. They had their Cabico cupboards hand painted (they wanted brushstrokes) and the look is very vintage with built in feet on the inset cabs, butcher block counters and vintage accessories including a 30's Hoosier cabinet. Kitchen Makeovers Fall 2008 Quite low budget kitchen in a 50's era home. Kitchen has a retro feel with white trim, white appliances, white cabinetry and a sheet vinyl white floor in a tile pattern. Walls are a stong colour that matches the laminate counters (no backspash) It's a U with uppers on only one side. Cute very simple and appliances seem to blend but overall the room has a stong retro feel. Kitchen Solutions #45 pg 38 Creamy white shaker cabinetry with Cleopatra granite and wood floor. Very contemporary (not modern) kitchen with a strong use of earthtones. In all honesty awful it looks like they cheaped out on the appliances (wall oven and micro combo, fridge and cooktop are visible). The appliances just look like they are waiting to be replaced. I like white appliances but the kitchen I'm working on is in a 50's row house and we are pushing the retro by doing a two tone composition vinyl tile floor, mixed cabinetry, open shelves and chunky hardware. Quirky not slick. Smilingjudy's fridge is very contemoporary and her only white appliance which is probably why it works with the more traditional white cabinetry (fridge and cabinetry have very different finishes as well) and those gorgeous Richlite countertops (very matte and just slightly mottled - quite different from a traditional granite). I'm not familiar with those shades from BM. But a good friend painted her kitchen cab's an olivey green for the "frame" of the cab's. The doors themselves are black with a bit of distressing. It looks absolutely fantastic. Her adjoining breakfast room has black table and chairs (country french looking) and her walls are an olivey green. In the kitchen, above the cab's (soffit I believe it's called?) is a green in a bit deeper shade than the cab "frames" (also the dining wall color). Wish I had a photo to share with you. It doesn't sound great, but it is honestly so beautiful. When she first told me her plans I didn't voice my hesitancy. Sounded odd to me. LOL! After she painted them, at our next get together with our group of girl friends, we all stood around and oohed and aahed over her kitchen. Everyone loves it! It looks gorgeous! :O) I say if you want to do two tones, go for it. :O)

Ok if faucet finishes are slightly off? i.e., don't match.

Brushed nicked and stainless frequently don't match. There is a faucet finish matching chart for ISE instant hots. What brand is your filtered faucet, and which main faucet do you have? In some cases between brands there is no match, but in many there are. You might also be able to find a match just by changing brands of filtered faucet. There are also often similar main faucets in different brands that might match better. Would that be an option? I don't mind things that are different but they have to be planned that way or be barely noticeable. A clearly noticeable difference that is not different enough to be planned would probably drive me nuts. I was obsessing about it in my own kitchen, and it was one reason I switched to chrome. I would rather see a black or white faucet in there if it matched the rest of the kitchen than mismatched silver finishes. For example if you had white cabinets and appliances a white filter faucet would kind of "disappear", rather than being more noticeable. If you had very dark cabinets with black glazing and/or black appliances that might work as well. In my kitchen, chrome looks fine at the sink with BN knobs and ss appliances, but everything at the sink matches, ss finishes are from the same manufacturer and match and certainly all my knob finishes match. And none are obviously yellower than another, etc. It doesn't look "matchy matchy" but coordinates well. Like using different shades of a color in a room. Thank you both for your thoughts. This is making me nuts. I don't know how to make this work. I'm trying to marry warm and cool. My trim is fairly neutral, but there is a lot of trim. My wall color is cool (RH Silver Sage), my floors are wood and kind of rustic and medium colored (Hallmark hardwood Historic Walnut). So what do I do with these cabinets? I'm so confused. I've looked around online to see what many people pair with silver sage, and most of them are white dove or swiss coffee. I'm picking up swatches of those paint colors tomorrow but I'm worried about how close they will be to my trim color.

With all the wood you have, it seems you're going for a more rustic look.....no? Years ago Victorian homes had all sorts of wood~wainscoting, ballustrades, floorboards, doors/trim~though mostly were quite dark, it all worked together beautifully, and many times they varied in shade.
It's a 'look' you will need to live with, possibly forever, and live *happily*.

I know silver sage to be a green/gray, so also muted in color. Maybe you should rethink the paint color, something warm, or even lighter.

Do you have any pictures so we can get a better handle on the space?

I've made an executive decision after much agony. I'm going to do the cabinets and trim the same color. Thus endeth one saga and beginneth the next :)

I think you're being wise. Looking at a possible mistake you've made day after day would be a heartbreaker.
