Comments (1)You should probably mock something up and try to judge for yourself, but a rule of thumb (and rules were meant to be broken) is 6-7" below your elbow...when standing with arms down, but bent 90 degrees at the elbow. That's what works for me. For the reasons you stated we built the island in our last house at 33". We loved it so much as, not only a baking space, but in doing all kinds of prep and projects, that in our new kitchen, the island, the whole rangetop run of counters, and my baking center counter (where we use the mixer) are all shorter. The rangetop and flanking counters are at 34 1/2", and the baking center and island are at 33". We're very happy with the result and how those heights work for us....See MoreDesign Critique for large kitchen/island plan
Comments (25)Have you considered changing where the kitchen is? For example can you build onto the back of the dining room? Then you can put the kitchen up there in the new addition. I'd think that if you're planning on adding on space, you might want to start thinking outside the box as to where you can change the placement of the dining room, kitchen and family room. It may give you more and better options. Or how about moving the kitchen to where you're planning on putting the family room addition? Additionally do you need a formal, separate dining room or could you incorporate it into a kitchen/great room/ dining space? I would first think in terms of not what you have right now, but how you live your lives. If you only use the dining room a couple of times a year, you might be better served with a smaller island, and the dining table where you can all use it and enjoy it daily; in your great room/kitchen/dining area....See MoreNeed Large Adobe Planter Ideas
Comments (3)Lowes garden dept. has huge selection of succulents, some are even already planted with mixed assortments, you could put two matching mixed baskets on the ends then a few larger types with perhaps some Rosemary in middle so you get a variation of heights, colors, textures, size of leaves, even smells and with adequate sun and water would even bloom, then in fall some varieties would change color. Some are even trailing so they would spill over the sides creating even more drama. It would be ever changing depending on time of year and season,it would look beautiful...See Moregw_monkeyjac
