When my father in law passed away a friend of mine brought roast beef, baked potatoes and green beans.

That was the BEST of all the foods that arrived. Other stuff was lots of ham, sandwich fixings and pasta salads.

Where I'm from, it's traditional.
She'll be inundated with sweets and desserts, so a sandwich tray would be nice or else something that will freeze. She's probably not going to want to think of cooking for awjhile, so having something she can have later will probably be appreciated.

Depends on the situation....elderly widow? House full of teenagers? Lots of family there?
Food can be a blessing if needed and a curse if there's too much of it.
If you're in doubt think of taking some ground coffee, or bottled juice or a case of coke and 7-up.
When my FIL died and all the relatives were congregating at my house....a friend brought over 5 pounds of coffee, 6 rolls ot toilet paper, a couple of packages of paper napking and some disposable cups....it was really needed and very nice....at that stage I was drowning in cakes and salads!

Oh, yes, do bring food! Not only is it traditional in tons of places, but it is also hard to think of cooking at times like this. I'll bet a whole day will go by before she realizes she forgot to eat.
Anything that can keep or be served a little bit at a time. If you cook it or prepare it some, that should help a lot!!
I'd go for meat and veggies/taters and casserole if it is easy to pop in the microwave to reheat. A quiche might be nice.
I think cold cuts and cheese slices are a great idea!! They are easy, don't need to be cooked, don't have to be heated and don't require much clean-up.

I always take a pot of homemade soup - nothing exotic, usually chicken rice or beef vegetable. Someone usually brings sandwich ingredients so it goes good with that.

I know it's traditional, but in my experience so much of that food gets thrown out, and ends up wasted, and only so much can fit in a freezer. People who are grieving generally don't have the energy to freeze things in a timely manner either. Depending upon the situation and how close you are, another idea would be to get a gift card for take out, so someone can run and get something if people do feel like eating. Otherwise, if you do decide to make something, I agree, comfort food is the best.

You might consider taking something over after the funeral and everyone is gone. An invite for a meal at your house when she' alone might be good too.

I usually take breakfasty foods -- muffins, loaves and/or breakfast hasbrown casserole with cooked pork sausages on top).

i always make a hearty pot of soup for the family, and deliver it hot in the pot in time for them to sit and eat it before getting ready for the viewing. in 25 or so years, this has never failed.
