What should I replace the plants on my deck with?

I have a screened-in deck that has a 2 foot ledge on the outside front of the structure that's almost like a balcony. In years past I had a couple large potted flowering plants that worked really well in that spot. I'd like to get away from the maintenance and mess associated with live plants, but don't want to spend the hundred bucks, or so, for outdoor artificial plants. I'm looking for suggestions as to what kind of low-cost, no maintenance decor I can go with in this spot. It looks naked with nothing there. I'm open to almost anything.

Anything you put in the spot is going to cost at least some money invested. I don't understand what you refer to as all the "maintenance and mess" associated with live plants. There are carefree houseplants that don't drop leaves, don't need to be watered except a few time a year, never need to be pruned or split, ect.

What were you growing before?? Maybe one of us can make a few suggestions for low maintenance plants that will fit your decor and zone. You are Zone 6 but does this enclosed porch face the sun all day or is it shaded?

Also, maybe you would not find caring for houseplants tiresome work if you were growing something that you can use like chives or lavender? There are lots of pretty plants that you can eat.

What color should I stain my deck?

You have a wonderful, huge deck in a beautiful backyard. You would need to do the benches as well as the railing and steps. If it were mine, I would clean it well then put on a protective coating. That alone will enhance the color and protect it from mildew and wear and tear. You have a lot of deck to cover and if you do a stain, it will NOT be permanent. It doesn't matter which type you purchase and use, it will need to be touched up and/or restained at least every few years and that is if it is applied perfectly. If you decide to deepen or change the color later, you can do it after you've sealed it. If you darken the color with stain and decide in a few years that you wish you hadn't, stripping it all off would be a nightmare and would damage your wood. A colorful unbrella for your table, plants in pots, and some decorative throw pillows would really finish it all off. We purchase our house with a dark stained deck on it and I HATE it. It is hot and the maintenance is a killer.

What should I replace my silver maple with?

I stand corrected on the Freeman maple, being that it is a hybrid or crossbreed of Silver and Red maple, maybe it does actually provide shade, and has better wood. I personally like the Sugar maples bark better. Caldwell, I think the OP was being sarcastic about cutting it down now. Lets all just chill now. Hey, maybe I'm wrong and Leslie chopped it down.....But, anyways, I had looked this up before, because my veteranarians office has a huge Sugar maple, or black Maple, the thing is huge and has a nice bright yellow foliage in fall. When I looked it up, I could swear that it said that Sugar maple needs full sun to grow. I will definitely be there as soon as the samaras/helicopters start falling. I have an area under a small tree that will likely be dead in 15-20 years. It is deep shade. I am trying to find a tree that will grow in this shade. I will be looking soon near the Beech trees near me, but, I think the critters may start earlier, and I doubt that the Sugar maples can grow in deep shade. I thought this tree was Sugar maple, but, Dax thought it could be Black maple. he is usually right, but, he may be overthinking this one?
