Anyone know if you can tea-stain indoor/outdoor canvas fabric?

I bought some striped indoor/outdoor canvas fabric to possibly use to reupholster my dining room chairs for my kitchen. I was told this fabric might be a good choice as it would be more resistant to kiddos. (Fabric lady said it really won't be, but is more UV resistant-- whoopdee doo.)
Anyhow, after getting it home, it's the right colors, but somehow seems a bit too "crisp" for what I'm doing here.
Does anyone have experience with "tea-staining" this sort of fabric? I'm wondering if it will take.
Thanks!
Lis
