Trash Can Pull Out Cabinet Style

We are having a trash can pull out cabinet installed - the type where the front of the cabinet pulls out like a drawer. My cabinet maker just asked me which type I wanted - didn't even realize there were two different types. My two options are:

Trash can that sits on top of the based of the pull out

Trash can that is dropped into a cut out frame.

Which is better? What are the pros and cons?

My Mom was advised by her installer that a top mount has better duarability (the ones with drop in containers). I assume the major problem is that with a bottom mount you are pulling at the top but the mechanism is at the bottom where with a top mount the mechanism is more in line with the pull as it would be on a drawer so there will be less stress on the glide (don't quote me). One of the pro KD's recently confirmed that in her experience top mounts are more durable and less likely to fail.

I am using recycled 15-year-old cabinets and the drop-in trash cabinet works perfectly, smooth as silk and completely sturdy, if that helps confirm the longevity of the design. I also love how it's impossible to tip the trash bins over this way, and how easy it is to drop in a new trashbag.

Sorry to revive this 11-year-old post, but this was exactly the question I wanted to ask. I am in the same position and am hoping the heat won't cook my trash too much. I am thinking of a stand-alone can in a cubbyhole without a cabinet but still with countertop over it.

Isn't 13 gal the standard kitchen bag size? That's what I use, and my trash can measures about 10 x 14 on top and 17" high. My garbage bin came with the pull out, and the pullout works like you say - there is a shallow base that holds the bin, as well as metal bars halfway up to keep the bin steady. I have empty space behind mine where I keep the garbage bags, among other things. I think it might be rev-a-shelf, that's what I think my cabmaker uses. But I don't think a 13 gal bag will go in anything much bigger, not 20" deep anyway. Are you thinking of the 30 gal trash bags?

There is a true "swing-out " that I have seen but the picture above is not it. It is a case of the can being attached to the door and so it comes out of the cabinet when the door opens. I can't think where I saw this, maybe Ikea? The downside IMO is that you can only have one container coming out -- in a pullout (if you choose) you can have 2 containers in the pullout. The thing that I do like about the 2nd picture is there is a built in lid that doubles as a shelf above the bins. That Rev-a-shelf unit is pricey, though!

I checked with my designers and although the 19" +/- height is pretty standard that is with a standard 8 gal container. They suggested getting a rev a shelf pull out unit sold separately and buying 7 gal containers which are the same approx size and shape only shorter and can be ordered from just about anywhere. I'm using an Ikea cabinet. I looks like this but I have no drawers (I think having drawers in a trash cabinet is gross) and the trash container is tall:

The front floats which i worried about but if you look towards the bottom there are bars that form a second attachment. It works really well.

my friend has the drop in one with two pails. her kitchen won an award for the state of Conn. so I say that's the one to go with! ;-)

Having just worked on a possible Ikea layout you can't get smaller than a 15" drawers base without going to the door pull out with interior drawers. In a small kitchnen a 12" cupboard only for the garbage is a lot of real estate for one function (I share the concern and would probably use it for recycling).

This is ours....and so far no problems. I like that fact that the bins are supported on the bottom where all the weight in the bins "settle". Think about where it's best to support something heavy...the top or bottom (especially when using a plastic edge (of the bin) to hold the weight)?

B/c it's a deep "drawer", there's no tilting of trash bins.

There's no hanging rail to get in the way of the trash bag. [The rail can be a pro, though, if your bags routinely slip off the top of the bin. You can lift up the bin, put in the bag, and tuck it inside the rail as you maneuver the bin back into the rail. Ours don't, so it's not an issue with us.]

mondragon, unlike the Ikea cabinets, the drawer above our trash pullout is completely separated from the trash area by a fixed wooden separator. The drawer sits above the separator. However, I do not put utensils, linens, wraps, etc. in that drawer as it psychologically does seem "gross". Instead, it's our "junk drawer".

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with either...so get whichever you like.

Sorry, but winning an award in some state contest doesn't impress me...I've seen a lot of so-called award winning kitchens and wonder how people actually work in them! Most of those contests are really form over function...with function at the bottom of the list! I also suspect that "longevity" is not on "the list" at all. Your friend's kitchen may or may not be wonderfully functional, but w/o seeing it I take the fact that it won a state contest w/a grain of salt. Again, sorry if I'm too blunt, but I would not use that as a reason to get something unless someone is going for form over function...i.e., a "show kitchen" as opposed to a working kitchen...which is OK if you're upfront about it...not everyone actually cooks in their kitchen...some people just have them for "show".

In fairness to Rev-A-Shelf it isn't the lip of the bin that supports the weight - the bins are tapered and openings are smaller than the bin is at its' widest point - you can see in the picture I posted that there is more than an inch before the bin lip would even come in contact with the wood. I tend to agree that either is probably fine but I would point out in terms of the application of force (either forward, backward or downward) the top mount screws are supported on all sides by the cabinet material while this is also true for the back and forth of the bottom mount in order to install the bottom mount there can't be anything over the installation screws (or you couldn't install it) so in terms of the application of downward force (like gravity) it is the weaker mechanism without question.

I really like the idea of a fixed shelf in between the drawer and the trash pull out. Did you have to request that or did your cabinets automatically come like that? I definitely need to check to see how mine will be made.
