It is a bunch of Rhipsalis. There are 3 species, one you can't tell is there (Hatiora salicornioides), one that goes down about to the railing (I forget the name), and the long one which drags on the ground and gets pruned when the mower goes by. It makes small whitish fruit that a Baltimore Oriole stripped off while I sat stock still so she wouldn't fly off. The next day a hummingbird came and picked off spiders that see the multiple thin stems and decide to set up housekeeping. Hard to have anything nice with neighbors like Orioles and Hummingbirds! :) This is an overexposed photo of the top of it last winter in the g-house. You can see the other species. Hey trudymom, sounds like you are getting pretty close to starting! 1. MW is Minwax, purchased at Lowes. I would call it dark and the actual name is "English Chestnut" in the yellow can. 2. Everything is stained the same color. However we have different wood: alder cabinets, pine trim, fur doors and they all take the stain differently. 3. Yes all the stone is the same. Sandstone is generally darker than limestone. The color ranges from tan, buff, khaki, chocolate to red. Our stone is chopped and the lighter colors were culled. All the stone yards around here carry the same sandstone but each yard and quarry has a different name for the stone. whether it be "Tumbleweed Tan," "Autumn Blend," "Old Hickory Blend" or whatever, it's all the same stone just different colors and cuts. 4. my builder installed the tile and that was the pattern he came up with. I have no idea if it has a name. 5. Are you looking for pictures of anything specific?

I find this thread most interesting. Years ago, I tried to use only live flowers and plants in my home--not really a successful venture. To make a long story short we developed a garden outside of our windows and added a sunroom that opens to a gazebo in the back yard. I do not use many live plants, except on a temporary basis in most of my home--not enough light, and I discovered that at least in my region, live plants carry carpet beetles. After having to send all of my oriental rugs out for repair from the damage of the beetle larvae, I became very careful of using live plants in rooms with carpets. I have many large tropical plants in pots plus I try to grow orchids, especially white and yellow ones. THese live in my sunroom, which is visible from the the main rooms of my home. These plants live outside in arbors, which are also visible from the main roomsduring warm months. I do cheat and use silk white orchids in my low light rooms. They are difficult to distinguish from real ones (I recognize some of them in shelter magazines--but if I did not have exactly the same silk orchid I would assumed that the mag. ones were real.) If I have orchids blooming, I will sometimes move the real ones to one of my interior rooms briefly just to enjoy. However, if they are not blooming, I have been known to "Spike" their pots with a stem of silk ones--a trick I learned from a florist friend. At any rate here is a link to pictures of my sunroon and other rooms where I have used various combinations. I would love to post them here, but even after carefully following directions the post shows only a blank square with the exception of a red x in the upper left corner. I agree, Kelly your home is beautiful...inside and out. The front door is to die for and the stone work, omg...I could go on and on how amazing everything you've done has turned out. So glad a new thread was started to showcase Kelly's home, it definitely deserves the praise it's getting. I like your black sofa table too. ;-)

Can I ask what you use to hang the wreaths on the outside of your doors? I would like to hang a wreath on my wood door but am afraid too.

Xoxosmom - I put teeny-tiny gold hooks (the kind that look like question marks) on the doors. Since the doors are very rustic with lots of cracks and knots it didn't bother me to make the holes. Anyway, when I don't have a wreath on the door the hooks aren't even noticeable.

Alisande - Just DH. He's a musician (and from the looks of his office, a slob to boot!) and has about thirty guitars and I don't even know how many amps & speakers. I'm so happy all that stuff is tucked away in it's own separate area of the house instead of strewn across the whole house like it was at our old place.

Your house is beautiful! Would you mind telling me what wood species your floor, trim and doors are? Did you match the stains? I am currently building and will be using wood trim and interior doors; not sure if they should be the same color as the wood floor. TIA

Best part of my Saturday morning so far! Stunningly beautiful home. Have I seen your front entrances in a magazine? or has your home been featured in a Frontgate spread on estates? I was going to guess No.Cal knew it was someplace warmer. Is there a way to look at each pic without a slide show?
curious, is DH anyone we know??? probably not a fair question. so don't answer.

You all are incredibly kind!

Jamms - All the trim, floors and doors are pine. The cabinets and front door are alder. I love alder so much I had my dining table and hutch custom made with alder. All the stain is MW English Chestnut except for the livingroom floor which is Puritan Pine.

Texanjana - I'm right outside of Austin.

I'm all about the boxer! The pics show my two babies, Lola and Tommy. They are both 3yo plus a couple of pics show my 10yo boy Jake, he died last February and every time I see those pics I get a pang in my heart.

All I can say about DH is that if you are a fan of a certain genre of rock music, then yes you would most definitely know him. Sorry for being coy but I have rules where DH is concerned!

What a wonderful home. The thing that got me wondering though, when I saw the sound room is there is another K Eng on a certain video website, no not that kind, doing a lot of great songs, great voice. A relation of your perhaps Kelly?
