Surprisingly Retired -- long

I went to work today, as normal for a Monday morning. And around 9 a.m. was notified that I'm one of the 4,000 people my company is laying off this month. My age and time-in-service combined give me a very generous severance package which will carry me past age 55, when I can claim retirement benefits. Since this is an involuntary retirement, I qualify for a Special Early package of 75% of full benefit.

I'm pretty numb right now. I kinda suspected it might happen, but it was still surreal when it did. It took everything I had, but I did not cry ... not when he told me, and not before I left the building. We've had so many layoffs over the past five years (over 20,000 people), and the stress has been tremendous ... both for the ones leaving and the ones staying and watching them go. I am not sorry to leave the environment.

I had a choice of working out my last two weeks or leaving right away ... and I went ahead and left. Like I said, I'd been thinking it could happen, so for the last week I'd been taking home bits and pieces of my 27 years. I finished boxing up my things and left.

All afternoon, I received emails and phone calls from co-workers expressing condolences and wishing me the best. And then I started feeling guilty for leaving so quickly, because I didn't finish up a few things I was working on and close them out properly. I don't feel guilty for the COMPANY, but for the people I worked with who now, don't have a resource they've come to rely on.

By fall I'll need start looking for a replacement job, just so I don't miss out on something terrific by waiting too long.

For the next couple of days, I think I'll have a bit of a pity-party, just for having my world yanked out from under me. Then I really should deep-clean this house. That'll take a couple of weeks! LOL! By then, I hope it'll be warm enough to get outside and dig in the dirt; I'm thinking I'll enjoy working my spring garden for a change without a deadline. Oh, and I have all the fixings to start learning mosaics which I've played with just a tiny bit. Part of me is afraid to let go and enjoy this reprieve I have before I need to find another job ... because I think I'm gonna have so much fun (when the shock wears off) that I won't want to give it up!

I did the big no-no and stopped off on the way home from work at 11 a.m. and bought a pack of ciggies. I intend to enjoy them without guilt and then quit again. For those of you who imbibe ... please have a stiff one for me one or two nights this week.
