Flea control for cats what's working now

What is the current best bet for flea control meds for Cats? I have had trouble with meds working for dogs in past. What are the go to meds now? I see they have Advantage II out, says it may not work for all cats.

My vet prefers Revolution.

I use revolution too. It is worthless for ticks, but my cat almost never is bothered by them. Revolution (selemectin) also prevents heartworm in cats. It is a spot on treatment so it is easy to apply.

Floating row covers can help, provided they are put in place before the flea beetles show up. You can get parasitic nematodes and drench the soil with them around susceptible plants. Insecticidal soap can help some as can Neem oil sprays. As a last resort pyrethrin based dusts may be necessary, if it appears you could loose your plants.

Revolution is very effective for fleas, but it has a relatively slow kill time (takes about 4 days for fleas to die). Flea life cycle stages in carpet may take a while to be killed, too, as they have to hatch and eventually get onto your cat. Could take a month or so to completely rid your house of a severe infestation problem using a topical like that, but it will work. Not sure what your reservations are about borax, either, but if you are patient, it won't be necessary. Capstar will instantly kill all fleas on your cat(s) but effect is only 24 hours, and fleas that have not gotten onto your cat by that time will still survive (though Revolution will get all them eventually). Program is probably totally unecessary and not that helpful in your situation.

For the advantage, where are you putting it on your cat? You are to put it on the neck and they can't reach it there to wash it off. We use advantage, for our dog and it keeps the fleas, they still would get some, actually found out when they were younger, they were picking it up from this dog that my mom would take them out with it and her friend. I had to check each time for the fleas and sure enough there would be one or two of them. Cats you can buy a flea comb and comb them each day. That sure works alot, the fleas love to go where its thick fur, like the neck area. Flea collars I would not put on at all. We only got one problem of fleas when we all first moved here and one of the dogs brought it inside in my bedroom and lay on the spare rug beside bed and one night I saw something leaping around and found out fleas. That is when we started using stuff for the dogs to stop that and the cats the flea combs daily were combed. Then they came out with advantage with the cats so you put it on their neck so they can't lick it off.

Rob, HERE'S the stuff that I used. It's mixed one ounce (one bottle) per gallon of water to cover 1500 sq.ft. I used a gallon of distilled water, poured a little out, and put the whole bottle in. From that gallon, I filled a good plant sprayer/mister....one with an adjustable nozzle. Use a clean, new sprayer, one never used for anything else and dedicate it solely for this purpose. Precor can be sprayed on carpets, furniture, bedding. If the bedding is washed, spray again. If the carpet is cleaned, spray again. There is no odor or residue or staining. Don't apply to the animal. IGRs are not knock down chemicals. They work by disrupting the normal life cycle of the insect, usually in the larval stage. Again....use it in conjunction with the other medications and procedures.

Fleas in different geographical areas can develop resistance to different flea chemicals. Your best bet is to call your local vets and ask them which products are currently the most effective in your area.

I am curious if anyone thinks the brands of flea Revolution for cats bought from the UK or Australia might be weaker than what I've bought in the US. After getting Kitty a cortisone shot to control the itching and bumps, they suggested I try Revolution (have been using Advantage for years, it's not helping much anymore). So I bought a tube of Revolution. Seemed to help pretty well. $20. Then I found some online, canada vet websites - half the price, bought some. Used one, doesn't seem as potent. Any thoughts about this?

I agree with what lauri said about calling vet to see what is working now in your area. They have a lot of new stuff out now. I will look and see what we used last. I have 2 border collies (often resistant) and 4 cats and we are doing pretty good the last few years with some of he new varieties out now. Also I tend to treat for a month or two get them under control... and then I am flea free for all the pets for close to a year. That's with sometimes just treating the dogs and the cats benefit from it.

I am sorry I don't see any evidence of what I last used on the cats. Sorry, I just see that I used Comfortis on the dogs last and I do believe they have a cat version. I can only speak with reference to the dog version the stuff is a miracle.

thanks jjaazzy - will keep trying-- am going to try a diff allergy cat pill and see if it helps kitty's itchy bumps- our other cat and 2 dogs don't seem to have any problems altho we can always scratch up a couple fleas on them - seems no matter what we've tried.
