Orange windex is okay for granite - you don't want to use ammonia on "sealed" granite - not sure about vinegar - the problem is what the cleaner will do to the sealer, not the granite itself.

And about windex, Im scared to use it but I did buy microfiber cloths made by quickie and they work miracles on granite,SS and the black shiny top of my stove. All I need is water. Give them a try and you'll see what I mean.

Steam is not a problem for granite. The cabinets on either side of the dishwasher, though-- that might be a different story, especially if the boxes are made of particle board or masonite.

My granite fabricator recommended Windex, but I did not realize that there were different kinds. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Our granite guys said to use either granite cleaner or windex vinegar. I already had purchased the granite cleaner spray for $10. when that was gone I switched to the windex.I have used the windex vinegar for 14 months and the sealant is still good. I have giallo veneziano which is super absorbant of a stone and no probs with the windex. We are coming up on resealing time- actually about 6 months over due. I use miracle 511 or whatever the name that Wild Bill Vincent suggests. He knows his stuff. Sue

We're going on six years with our Giallo Veneziano (as cooperbailey said, it's very porous) and Absolute Black granite, all cleaned with regular old run of the mill Windex from Costco. Haven't sealed the granite since the initial sealing almost six years ago. The granite looks great! And this is in a kitchen that gets loads of heavy use. Although we're empty nesters, we do lots of entertaining and the counters have had wine, cooking oil and vinegar sitting on them for a day or two before being discovered, all with no ill effect.

I think it's natural to get a bit paranoid when you realize how much you've spent on granite. It's like parking your new car two blocks from the mall to avoid that first scratch. But if you've used a good sealer (we used Porous Plus), you really shouldn't have a problem. Although there's no sign that our sealer is degrading (i.e., no dark spots appearing when the counter gets wet), we'll probably re-seal this summer just to be on the safe side.

Chill, folks, you can take your counters for...granite! ;-)

I asked my granite contractor what to use on my granite. He told me car wax. He said his wife uses Pledge. What do you think about that?

yep, there are about six different Windex varieties. THe web site says all contain ammonia exc. the vinegar and outdoor varieties.

That's interesting - they revamped their product line - looks like they don't make Orange Windex any more - unless they call it something else now!

My fabricator told me to use "white" windex, which I assume is the vinegar type. Never to use the blue type because over the years the blue will begin to show!! I don't know how many years but that's a lot of cleaning.

Here is the email I got from SC Johnson:

can be used on sealed granite surfaces, as we have tested it for that

recommended care and cleaning instructions on your granite."

My granite guy says to use ph balanced cleaners. It won't break down the sealer. I want to put "extra" sealer around my
sink- can I put sealer on sealer ?

nodirthere - you don't want extra sealer - once the stone has absorped all it needs, the rest of the sealer will sit on top - the sealer itself can get filmy, dirty and streaky.

weissman- thanks-I'll hold off-I have UbaTuba and saw on another thread that it's one of the least porous and doesn't need to be sealed as much- feeling calmer.
