First of all, I am really no expert, but can maybe pass along some tips since I've recent gone through the housebreaking thing. It can be difficult and takes a lot of patience. My pup was pretty well paper trained from day one but after a while that got sort of frustrating when he starting dragging pee pads and chewing them and then peeing in the spot where the pee pad used to be. I find that after 5-1/2 months he is really just starting to be more dependable now and getting the hang of peeing only outside. But, I read that pugs can be more difficult to house train. He now seems to have better control to hold it longer, such as when we are gone from the house to go to work. He still has some accidents, but sometimes it's our fault if we're home because we don't realize that he's asking to go out. As he's aged and his fur has become thicker, he seems to be able to spend more times outdoors. That and milder weather really help. I still go outside with him, I'm just protective of him. He gets treats whenever he pees, but only a crumbled bit of his biscuit. One thing too, if you take him outside and he just runs back to the door to go in, pick him up and take him back to the area where you want him to pee. It doesn't always work, but often he might decide to pee the second time. Also, you will find they are easily distracted so if he's about to pee outside and the neighbor comes out of his/her door, puppy might start barking instead of peeing. My pup definitely has to go whenever he wakes up from a nap. In fact, sometimes if it's before bed I'll wake him up to take him out, or if I get up at 3 a.m. I might take him out as well. I sort of keep track and drag him outside if it's been too long. I figure the more he goes to the washroom outside the more it becomes habit and is engrained in him. Today we visited his Grandparents and he did go by the back door to go outside, which is great because I worry about him having accidents inside others peoples homes. Plus I started thinking maybe he's really starting to realize not to pee inside anyone's house. Good luck, hang in there,it will get better, Glen

Hey sorry I haven't gotten back sooner I was having computer issues. We considered the possibility that she would be better in another home but decided, together, to keep her. We put her on her old food and she's not been throwing up since. We're mixing it with new food, IAMS (vet said to go with Hills but I educated my mom on who trains vets in nutrition). I was giving her the milk we drink but not to sustain her, just a small bit to keep hydrated when throwing up. Now she drinks water. Having three 8 week old puppies was too much at the time but now that Peanut and Punkin are almost two years old they are not as dependent and are house trained (well Peanut still goes inside if you don't see her heading to the back door) and have taken more to the puppy now. They play together a lot especially outside and there is harmony in the kitchen at meal times. I've read up on the breeds and know that early socializing and discipline are needed to have this dog's respect. I believe that she will need a long walk in the morning and evening (45 mins each time at least) and I can challenge her more if I get her a backpack when she's older. She had her first shots two weeks ago and I really want to get her walking but beegood mentioned about sidewalks and Parvo so I was wondering if anyone knows how long before I can take her outside and when she can meet other dogs? Also she has really short soft fur and seems to get cold very easily. I bought a small jacket but its light and goes over her back mostly. Should I wait until the weather gets warmer?

Riding in the back next to your new puppy's crate is a great idea. Also I'd buy a good fitting harness for him to wear in the car, possibly one of those soft stretchy fabric ones, maybe two different sizes to be assured that one will fit him correctly. Pups can't wriggle out of a harness as easily as slipping a collar if he were to become frightened en route. And if you make pit stops along the way, this is a safer means of walking the pup. I'd also recommend packing a roll of paper towels, water, plastic bags, and an additional crate mat or towel/blanket for the crate, in case your baby becomes car sick. I would pack drinking water and a dish too. Another thing I always do with any dog is to be sure he is wearing a collar tag with both my cell phone number and my home phone, in case the unthinkable should happen and your dog should get away from you and become lost.
