The cooktops are behind the lips in the counter on each side of the knife block. We are looking at the back of the island.

I particularly enjoyed the electrical cords hanging off not one, but *two* over-the-fireplace TVs. I am guilty of being an electrical wire miscreant, but not quite that blatantly. If I had a house on the market for $8mm, I think I'd spring for bringing Sparky in for a day to hide the wires, and while I was at it, I think I'd shake out the wrinkles in my duvet cover before the listing pics were snapped.

Why do I find there's a great deal of ego involved in this sale?

Or do people really pant after something owned by a minor, 5-minute celebrity? Of a rather embarrassing TV genre, no less?

I wouldn't trade my formerly burned-out, incomplete, piecemealed ranch for it.

Sandyponder, I often ask that question of the Home shows where they hang curtains and never straighten them out or fix them so they hang well side to side. Often they just stick a rod in them and poke it into the wall, brushing their hands and exclaiming, "There! doesn't that look better?"

I couldn't keep my eyes from rolling while reading that article. "...with a lot of color." There was only one room, the bathroom, that had any substantial color anywhere, much less on a semi-permanent basis. Every wall was white, most furniture was white or woodtone. Even the artwork is black and white. Two red couches do not a colorful house make.

My favorite part of the slideshow was the picture of the plastic cups emblazoned with ONE TWO FIVE. So fancy! That collection easily adds $19.95 to the value of the home. lol

I don't get it either. There doesn't seem to be a cooktop under the hood. The photo from a different angle doesn't show any cooktop behind the stainless steel lip thingys. Speaking of stainless steel lip thingys... those look like pop up vents for a downdraft vent system. So now we have two ventilation systems ventilating a knife block?

There is a cooktop visible in the last picture right across from the refrigerator, It looks like a smooth top. Behind the taller one you can see the handle of a tea kettle.

We would have to know what the other houses are listed for in the area to make a judgement about the price. The land values have increased a lot there since they built, even with the down turn. They just had the most expensive tear-down in history in the Hamptons last year.(of a move-in ready house, anyway).

I like the commitment, anyway, of the red bathroom.

Good news is that the bones of the house are decent. I have trouble with the kitchen being so tiny for a....what?...wait for it.....5800!!!!! sq ft house. I guess you don't cook in the Hamptons.

All in all, vacated of the furnishings, dangling cords, and those horrid plastic cups, it's a solid house.

Given the size of the hood I expected to see some sort of cooking arrangement big enough to spit roast a whole pig. The ventilated knife block angle might have worked better if the knife block had been put away, maybe with the plastic cups.

Some rangetops for islands use an island trim at the back which sticks up above the top of the counter. Our Bluestar for example:

The back of the Bluestar island trim has a couple of screws so it isn't terribly pretty. Our fabricator made a trim to cover the back:

Since this is an open burner range top, the trim allows air intake to feed air that comes up from under the burners when they run. In the range version of the Bluestar, it also feeds air for the oven.

Perhaps the lips on the counter are covering similar island trim behind the burners under the hood or they may have just been put in as a small barrier between the hot surfaces and the back island counter. In any case, it seems an odd spot for a knife block - a utensil caddy maybe, but a knife block?

Having your "sheets, cups and tissue boxes embellished" with your house number is kind of weird.
