How long have they been breeding? How many litters a yr does she produce? 1 to 2 is more than enough!
Why did she do this breeding? (What you want to hear is - that she wants something out of the cross.) It doesn't always work out but that is why any quality breeder breeds.
Does she do testing on her breeding animals?
What insurance does she offer on genetic Medical defects?
Is she active in the Corgi Club of Amer.
Does she show her Corgis?
Will she be avail for suggestions after sale?
Are the pups "litter registered"? Don't leave without the litter registration and don't be upset it with a "limited registration" as a good breeder will only sell with limited reg.
How well socialized is the litter? Were they temperment tested? (If not it wouldn't stop me from a purchase but it is good sign.)
What you are really looking for is someone that is interested in the breed not someone trying to make money.

Can you return the puppy if the Vet sees a problem that concerns you?

Try and familiarize yourself with any genetic problems the breed has and then ask about what kind of screening procedures she does. A big red flag would be if she tells you there are no problems or she hasn't had any if she has been breeding for a while.

She should have just as many if not more questions for you. Such as where will puppy sleep, Will it be inside or outside. In the event you can't keep the dog will you return it to her or allow her to assist in finding a new home.

It would be nice to find a breeder that wants to stay in touch after the sale. Not those clingy M.I.L. types but you know, a phone call now and then, someone you can call anytime with questions or someone who can take your dogs in the event of an emergency.
And yeah find out what health testing those dogs need and look them up to see that it was done.

Also you may want to ask around if your breed has a forum or mailing list see if you can get the low down from some long time members as sometimes breeders that have been around a long time still have horrible reputations.

Eandhl list is pretty good, I would add one to that,

Ask to see the parents. Check their temperment.

You breeder should also be asking YOU lots of questions, too. If they are a good breeder they should want to make sure their puppies go to good homes. If they aren't asking you questions, I would wonder why.

Hi, thanks for your responses. I met with the breeder today, very nice & she judges many corgi dog shows, we talked for over 2 hours.
So I will be getting him in 2 weeks, I am going out of town the weekend after next & didn't want to bring him home then leave him.
Now I need to find a name for him, if anyone has any suggestions I am open to them.

The breeder isn't Stephanie Hedgepeth is it? She designs cross stitch charts and has done some fabulous dog breed leaflets. I think she also breeds Corgi and is a judge. Is there a kennel name you have yo use? or maybe the parents names and you could tie something into that. My German Shepherd's parents are named Ike and Tina. I love the K-9 movies too so we call the pup Jerri Lee. It ties into both. Her "official" name tho is Lvdobes Kiss Me Deadly. Naming pups is fun tell us something about you and the pup and maybe we can help come up with something.

I thought they had a long waiting list. I might be thinking of the other corgi but I forget which is which.

No, her name is Gayle Garvin, she has a web site Garvin Corgis. His dad is wheezer & I don't remember his mom's name, his grandfather is Glasdawn's Mad Dash. My Dalmation is Coach & Shelby is the Collie.

One of the most important questions I plan to ask any breeder from whom I get a dog in the future, is which one is the alpha pup? Because I've had alpha dogs and non-alpha dogs, and I much prefer non-alphas -that's MY role :o)

Having bred several litters in the past, believe me, the little guys come out the chute already programmed with their future mentalities. So it should be obvious to anyone who has spent enought time with the litter which dog is in which spot in the pecking order.

And if a breeder didn't understand what I was asking, or did not know the answer, I would start to seriously doubt theat the pups had received adequate socialization.
