LOL! I just posted some runners I was considering on another thread! good timing! You can have a runner made out of just about any carpet - but you want to make sure to use something without a 'bend' in the fabric when it curls around the stair nose. If you have a stair runner, it is usually installed for the entire run, including landing.

I have used conventional carpet as runners. If it is plush it can be turned under or bound/serged on the edges.

Berber IMO looks better bound or surged so the backing does not show through the short yarns.

A good carpet layer should be able to do a mitered installation of a patterned runner so it looks nice going around the bends. This takes extra yardage for some waste, but it is a nice effect.

What do you guys think about stair treads? I really don't want to cover up all our new floors.

This is what we ended up getting.
Braided Stair Treads. They just came in today. I will have to take a pic when they are installed. I chose the seaglass color as it has more of my colors in it.

The dog has been banned from the stairs for 2 weeks, so I am sure she will be happy to have this installed.

You can have any stair runner installed to wrap around a landing.

These are our stairs... there is a landing, where the stairs turn 45 degrees and then continue -- you can't see this in the photo. The installer brilliantly worked with the pattern so that you can't see the seam at all.

When the carpet installers come and measure your stairs, they will tell you what you need to know about the landing.

Here is a pic of what we ended up with. I like it as it has all the colors of the family room and living/dining room.

Now I can't get the dog to do the stairs! She has been off them for 2 weeks, now she won't go up! Go figure...

I am also on the hunt for a stair runner. My 120 mature lab has fallen a bit when he gets in a hurry & ended up doing front flips down the stairs - not a pretty site:(

In a previous house, I had a remnant of berber bound & it worked great.

I stop by a high end carpet store often looking for a quality wool carpet that is a remnant. They said I probably need an 8x10 size to cut down & have bound. I asked about seagrass & carpet guy was aganist it??!!

MIL has a landing also & has used very nice runners & the installers did a great job with the landing. She actually kept the fringe & they tucked it incase she has another purpose for the runners down the road.

Try looking at the company Flor for carpet squares that you can peel up and clean. This comes in handy when you have a pet.

What is keeping those braided stair treads from slipping?

There is a mesh double sided like tape that you put down first. It holds the rugs down, but you can pull it up if you need to reposition.

Dog is taking the stairs like a pro now! So glad we did this.
