$10K for L-shaped kitchen+island-what would you do?

Comments (24)I'd really keep the corner pantry as a closet -- Much more usable shelf space, and a significant cost savings over a cabinetry version. (Doesn't hurt to ask your builder though, since if your cabinets are site-built, that might not be true.) If possible, have adjustable-height shelves on ALL of the available wall space, even though some would be narrow. In a pantry, even 6" deep shelves are VERY useful. For your pantry doors, I'd go with two narrow 'French doors' rather than the larger single. It's more gracious, more interesting, and IMO, a bit more practical since it won't block aisles. The fridge aisle has been covered -- necessary change. Either shring the aisle or scoot the island into the nook. And don't worry too much about lining up your sink and range. The only time the offset would show is when you were standing dead-on straight to the range and obsessing about it. And setting your faucet to one side would effectively camoflauge any offset anyway. I'd agree with the idea to expand your kitchen into the nook, because the existing kitchen space just seems too small for the rest of the house. Maybe a nice hutch-style piece with dish storage and serving pieces on top, linens and ugly stuff down below? Then a really cute but comfortable 'bistro' table and two chairs in front. Someting cozy and intimate. Keep your decorating style the same in both rooms and make it a gracious eat-in kitchen instead of a separate breakfast room. For your dining room, I totally agree about ditching the angle and squaring it off. Comments (5)if it's definitely under counter fridge drawers-they can obviously go anywhere. the efficient, better ones are quite expensive-freezer drawers would be separate-then you are into serious money for a second residential situation. Not worth it because I think the freezer is important. If "not serious" cooking means food comes in and out but no holiday banquets/gourmet meals/etc ,then microwaving frozen entrees/breakfast with milk/cereal/eggs/toast/leftovers from restaurants/light sandwiches /etc is what you mean,probably. I would get a samsung or similar upright smaller fridge with typical freezer on top-or freezer below and position it at one end of the run. Be sure and have a microwave-as far as cooking-you could get a basic ceramic cooktop/omit a typical oven and get the GE advantium oven-smaller/but good for this situation. From my travels and staying in cottages/lets,and owning one and renting it out-priorities: regular smallish fridge with freezer/small single sink with oridnary faucet and 18 in dishwasher. Basic range or cooktop/okay to omit oven but have microwave and the GE advantium/OR Microwave that has convection cook-full size/efficient model. Base cab drawers are not a priority but if you have space go ahead and add a pot drawer to the basic utensil drawer. I would not omit wall cabs entirely-when people "stay"-they'll buy a few cooking ingreds/cans of soup/bag of rice/pack of crackers,etc-and the wall cab for dishes/bowls and another cab for the misc grocery items will be put to use.A mistake would be the full on expense of all drawers and no wall cabs.If you want an airy look-then get entry level cabs with glass doors-get your glass locally-this will be cheaper than all drawers....When you factor the diswasher/range OR under counter oven/sink base cab/utensil stack of drawers/... it's a fair amt of sq footage....having a couple wall cabs is typical and customary....See MoreRemodel to L Shaped Kitchen W/ Island - design dilemma !! 3 entry ways
Comments (15)Here is an idea for you. Minimal framing and it would open up the kitchen space: 1. tear out the pantry and the internal walls of the powder room and the powder room sink. 2. Frame in a pocket door and solid wall for the powder room, reorienting the door. 3. change up the sink in the powder room for a very minimal thin sink hung on the wall across from the toilet and change the toilet to a round bowl that takes up less space. 4. Frame in a new wide archway to the dining room that is next to the stairwell 5. eliminate the existing door to the dining room 6. counters along the exterior wall with sink under window and cooktop on exterior wall for venting 7. countertop along dining room wall anchored by a double oven 8. refrigerator and pantry along opposite wall from sink - can make pantry depth of standard depth fridge to save on appliance cost - pantry can be doors with shelves all around or cupboards with pull outs. 9. island with 42" space to sink area and aligned with dining room opening 10. not to worry about work triangle with fridge because island becomes prep space see sketch:...See MoreHow would you furnish this L shaped living room?
