yes, I did the painting..was going to do the hardwood, but decided to contract it out to a friend. It was a good decision

Fabulous! What a great change. The whole area is much richer, and the stair now compliments rather than fights with your wall color.

Thanks..speaking of wall color, Its been 8 years in this house, and the walls are the next thing to be done. We are still pretty content with the color (Glidden Coastal Beige) and I was considering just doing one coat with the same color.

The whole main foor (except kitchen) is in this color as well as the upstairs hall. it is a fairly open concept. I would be open to any new color ideas though....at least for consideration

That is magnificent! And what a huge job, to sand down and prep all those balusters and the handrail! I especially like the chocolate color with the white. How long did it take you to do all this?

For context, there were 93 ballisters, 5 posts, and about 50 to 55 feet of handrail and about 20 feet of baseplate

I didn't sand right down to bare wood and I didn't just scuff it up...somewhere in between.

I would estimate 8 hrs sanding (all by hand). 4 hours for the primer coat - easy because there is no real precision involved. 5 hours for each of two coats of white, and about 2 1/2 for each of three coats of the chocolate. The hardest part is cutting in on the underside of the handrail where I was basically lying on my back looking up.
The ballister are almost square, so I used a 4" roller after cutting in from top and bottom.

Of course there is also the cleanup time of using oil based paint, and not to mention all vacuuming and tack cloths. I should note I was very happy with the primer. It was the part that scared me, the fear of peeling, but it held very firm when I tried to abuse it

Thanks for all the nice comments, very gratifying. We're pretty happy with the result (my wife is out and out thrilled) and we were inspired by the pics of others here, so that's why I shared.

I love the columns in the background of your pictures, can you tell me what the height of you ceiling is there? I posted about columns with 8 ft ceilings and I want to do something similar with my kitchen/living room. Sorry, don't mean to highjack the thread. Your staircase looks fabulous!!!

msmagoo, they are 9 ft ceilings on the main floor (8ft upstairs)

I am envious as I also have oak railings that do not go with my decor at all!!!

I appreciate your details of how you did it, but I wonder how you figured it out? Did you consult with a local paint store? Did you find instructions online (and if so, will you share)?

karezz....I read through threads here and elsewhere on the internet, consulted at the Benjamin Moore, as well as a relative that is a painter. I was pretty much set on oil paint since I've always used it on trim and like the results better than latex. My big decision was gloss or semi gloss on the railing (never used gloss before) but I decided to try it after reading about others using it and ended up quite happy with the results.

I love your new banister and the colors you used! I love the white with the black. I love your wooden floor and the wall color. You did a wonderful job. My railings going up my step are a bright white gloss (but is not so shiny so looks like a pearl finish to me) with oak tops and sides rather than your black. I am keeping it since it matches the oak kitchen cabinets and the stairs can be seen by the open kitche. If I ever have a chance to paint the cabinets that are a little bit worn out, I will look at this post as my inspiration for my step railings. Thank you for sharing your talented hard work.
