Toilet bowl keeps filling

I have a 5 year old Gerber toilet in my basement. I went downstairs today and I saw that the bathroom was soaked in water and water seeped under the molding into my den area. After trying to figure out where the water was coming from, I found out the toilet is running at times without being flushed. It goes over the water piece that fills up the toilet and keeps running, hence, the overflow. It does not have a ball adjustment, seems it's controlled from a pump.

If I adjust the pump to make it stop filling, a few minutes later the water starts going down and then reaches a point and starts filling up again. Obviously, I have shut off the water valve otherwise I'd be having another flood.

Can this be fixed my me or do I need to call a plumber?

First, there are different styles of fill valves, and not all invole a ball. I don't know what you have, but I don't understand how a toilet would be controlled only by a pump. I suspect you have a valve in the toilet and it's malfunctioning.

Second, if you have water on the floor, this is likely to be an entirely different problem. Water on the floor usually means you have a faulty seal between the bottom of the toilet and the floor flange.

Third, I had three Gerber toilets in my 8 year old house, and got rid of them all because they functioned so poorly. I won't say all Gerber's are bad, but the ones I had were the most easily clogged toilets I have ever seen.

I think you have at least two separate problems, and it is probably beyond your skill level to correct them by yourself. I recommend you have a plumber come and install a new toilet and resolve everything for you at one time.

If the bowl is filling up and running over the top, then the toilet is plugged.

Yes, you seem to have two different problems. It is not expensive to fix the inside of the toilet. This isn't rocket science.

Once clean, I don't think you will have any problem with stains. I am 75 and never had a problem. You just have to clean them often and the ones rarely used need to be flushed occasionally and cleaned. I try to keep the use of chemicals to a bare minimum, so I use soap and water for most cleaning. I use cheap dish washing liquid to clean the stools and have been doing that for 2 or 3 years. If I buy shampoo that I don't like I use it to clean the stool. I haven't seen any problems doing that. My neighbor said, "but it's not sanitary", my reply was I don't drink out of it. LOL

As posted, there must be slack in the chain with the flapper seated and the fill tube thay goes in the overflow tube must terminate higher than the tube and the water level must be below that overflow tube. The correct water level is usually marked inside the back of the tank with a horizontal line. If this is an old style water waster toilet then a red Fluidmaster (non-adjustable) flapper valve should work. If the toilet is a newer 1.6 flush then you may need the exact OEM flapper regardless of what the aproned know-it-all at the big box store tells you or what it says on the package. Shut off the water to the toilet and flush. Hold the flapper up or remove and take the scrubbie side of a wet kitchen sponge and softly run around the flapper valve seat in a circular motion. It may seem clean but harness deposits are hard to spot on a valve seat. If there are hardness deposits white vinegar will remove them.

If it's a FluidMaster brand flush valve, they occasionally need replacement of the seal located under the cap at the top of the unit. the seal starts to stick and not fully open. The seals are available at most locations that sell the replacement valve assemblies.

Make sure the water level in the tank is at least 1" below the overflow tube. Make sure the fill tube (from the fill valve) is directing water into the overflow tube. Checking the flapper is easy... a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait to see if the color gets to the toilet bowl. If it does then the flapper is leaking. Clean the flapper valve seat. Use the scrubbie side of a kitchen sponge and wipe the seat area (where the flapper sits) in a circular motion. The old style toilets seem to be happy with the Fluidmaster 400 fill valves and the red flapper valves. The new ECO friendly toilets can be picky about fill valves and flappers and only seem to likeOEM replacement parts.

With a flashlight, check a couple areas around the toilet:

In no particular order:
* tank hold-down bolts (underneath)
* supply line (at shut-off valve
* supply line where it connects to the tank
* flush handle (not common, but if the tank is filling up to the handle for another reason (like high overflow tube), it will leak out the handle hole)
* make sure the fill hose is clipped onto the edge of the overflow tube and aimed into it.
* base of toilet all around

The overflow you're getting is in the fill tank itself rather than that the water is coming over the top of the toilet bowl, right?
