Trend away from island cooking?

Are people seeing more islands without cooktops these days and cooktop/range moved to the perimeter, or does it just seem that way with the interest in pro-style ranges which seem to be more often on the perimeter?

Is it just a matter of preference where to do your cooking (island vs. perimeter) or are there functional arguments both ways? I can think of some, cooktop on the perimeter keeps island "clean" and more usable for prep. Cooktop on the island keeps the cook in the crowd, looking out at the room? Just wondering about other pros and cons. Thanks!
