Puppy won't eat......

.....food from her bowl. She will eat if scoop some of it with my hand and put it on the floor next to her bowl.

Why is that?

She is a 9 week mini schnauzer & the food is Eukenuba small breed puppy food. I know, I know - not the best food but it is what the breeder gave her and after she settles in here a bit - I will gradually switch her to something better.

Any ideas? I don't want this pup to think I'm going to hand feed her all the time!

Maybe she doesn't like her bowl. Seriously. Dogs can be weird. What kind of bowl are you using, and do you wash it after each meal?
Or maybe she just likes you to have dinner with her.

I had a Doxie at one time and we fed him from a stainless bowl. He would dance around it like a nut and poke his little head in quickly, grap a mouthful, and jump back. In my great wisdom, I finally figured out his name tag was hitting the bowl and either scaring or shocking him. Got him a nice quiet plastic bowl and he ate happily ever after.

Don't hand feed her, but do try another bowl, another location and some more delicious food. She'll eat.

Plants my cat *loves:* * Dracaena marginata. Maybe because it looks like pet grass? Got it because I thought it might be tall enough to be out of her reach, but she'll stand on the planter and nibble on it! * Peace lilies. She'll nibble on whole leaves! She's eaten so much of it in the 6 months or so that I've had it, it's now smaller than when I bought it :( Plants she hasn't touched yet: * Pachira Aquatica (I've had it for a few weeks/month now). I got a taller version (waist/stomach height), but some of its leaves are still low enough that she can reach, especially with her planter-standing method. However, so far I haven't seen any nibbles! Fingers crossed that she doesn't grow accustomed to its scent or something of the sort and becomes more curious! * Snake plant. I didn't realize this plant was toxic for cats, but thankfully it's always been housed in areas she can't frequent -- in a hard-to-reach spot of a kitchen counter/island (I had it surrounded by cookbooks and my coffee maker) or its current spot at the top of a bookshelf. They don't require loads of light, so it's easier to position these plants somewhere you can enjoy, but your cat can't. * Succulents. I've kept a couple in window sills year-round and she hasn't touched them. Although I don't recommend keeping succulents indoors unless you have super bright Southern sunlight or grow lights. I had an Echeveria Green Goddess that is etiolated slightly from my mostly Southern, slightly Eastern window. I think I'll stick with sedums/Graptopetalum Paraguayense (which I think still look attractive with their sliiiiight legginess) for indoors year-round.

Kirk..Are you talking about your new fish? IMO it is sometimes what they have been used to eating versus a new kind of food. My fish will eat anything, but prefer floating pellets because that is what I give them. They don't like to have to find them on the bottom. They will eat sinking pellets, if I drop them slowly. My daughters fish only will eat sinking pellets, because that is what they are used to. They seem to like scrounging around on the bottom for their food. Your new fish also need to adjust to a new invironment. You can give them cooked green peas minus the skin of the peas. Hope they start eating soon for you. Glenda

I live in a remote area of the desert and we used to have several coyote packs out here. Sadly, idiots have shot most of the coyotes just because they were coyotes. Now, we have an out of control rabbit population. It only took two years without coyotes. The cottontails aren't have the problem that the Jack Rabbit (hares) are. I leave water out in several spots as I heard that helps. It doesn't. I planted a thorny hybrid type of cactus that I was told they would hate. They ate it in half. I planted a soap aloe, that I was told they would hate due to the taste. They ate every single spear in half. I planted roses and they stripped them immediately. We planted lavender and they ate every single plant TO THE GROUND. Now, we have ugly chicken wire cages around every rose, all our young pine trees (they ate those too), and all our expensive rabbit-resistant cacti. Someone recommended we use human urine around the plants. We tried it around one plant and it appears to have worked, but WE smell it too. No thanks. I am ready to start culling out the over-populated hares here. Idiots should have never killed off all our coyotes. The only plants they do NOT eat here so far: California poppies California Bluebells Desert Marigold Needleleaf Ragwort Fruitless Olive tree (or their shoots, which I wish they WOULD eat) Pomegranate tree (or their shoots, which I wish they WOULD eat) Chia The plants they DO eat so far: Lavender Cornflower/Bachelor Buttons Daisies Desert Asters Rose bushes Afghan Pine Trees COUNTLESS wildflowers that were in a wildflower mix that got munched as they sprouted Soap Agave Hybrid Purple Prickly Pear (with big white thorns!!!)

the puppy does not have signs of parvo, my puppy I Had a long time ago died of that and they have black diahreah until they are dead it takes only about 3 days for it to die. I think these people on here are so ignorant and full of hate. they did nothing to help you figure it out just cut you down. my 11 week old puppy got up sick today she throwed up four times today and wont eat or drink, I do know that puppies do throw up a lot so I am not to panicked yet. I wil see how she is in the morning. I understand your delimma about not having money to go to the vet if you dont have it you dont have it. You sure as hell cant get blood out of a stone right? These idiots on this page should not even bother commenting they have no knowledge of anything just insults is all they know.

LOL - weed30! That's kind of how I felt. I thought to myself as I was putting the food on the floor - Wait a minute! Who's training who?

mes444 - I didn't even think about the bowl. They are 2 stainless steel bowls set into a painted metal (steel?) base. The bottom of the base has a rubber strip around it and is slightly wider in diameter than the top.

I guess I will try new bowls and then new food.

One time I had this problem with not liking the bowl so switched to a paper plate and voila.
Of course then we'd have to play chase to get the paper plate back so that was a short lived thing.

Also, make sure the bowl isn't too deep. Puppies have big heads in relation to their bodies and she may feel as though she's tipping forward into it if it's too deep. Could be why the other poster's dog preferred a paper plate.

I think it could be the stainless steel. I've known several dogs over the years that don't like the stainless steel. Perhaps, they see their reflection in it and think its another dog. And sometimes its the clinking noise from tags, that is distracting.

Over the years, I have found the best dishes to be the heavy duty cermaic ones. Easy to clean, durable and too heavy for the dogs to tip over.
