I'm kind of a risk taker and I generally follow my dreams. My obstacles are finances.

You know, it's funny...I can't think of a single thing I wouldn't just do if I had say 20 extra rooms to play with LOL I suppose if there was anything it would be a girly beyond girly room...pink, fairy's etc., but we don't have a girl...so I'm not exactly missing out there.

Ah, walkin, what a coincidence...you know what I'm doing? I found some Target Graham & Brown wallpaper at Goodwill, of all places, something like $5 for a roll, and I've cut out the figures and am going to try putting them up like decals with removable adhesive spray (unless I find a removable adhesive that doesn't spray) in our Master WC, to give us something besides bare walls to look at. I've been cutting them out while watching Daily Show and Colbert :)

Alternatively, you could put your gorgeous wallpaper of choice onto a board and mount the board for a while and see what you think...I'm thinking of doing that with some vintage grasscloth behind our bed...

Wow, I have lots of dreams that for either financial reasons or lack of guts are never going to see the light of day.

One of my more reasonable things is getting white slipcovers and draperies for the living room - I just love all white rooms - but don't have the guts (though I was tempted by all those pretty photos of the IKEA Ektorp sofa the other day.)

Where were you thinking of putting the wallpaper? I'd love to see pics. I don't have the energy to *paint*, much less hang wallpaper :-)

I think I'd like to learn some trim carpentry. We moved into a builders spec house with little to no architectural detail and round corners. Id love to add some trim to the openings...and if it was wood that would be all the better.

That wall paper is really neat. This may sound weird, but recently I had a queen anne bench reupholstered in a fabric similar to that. The lady that did it does alot of reupholstering for people in Vegas and she said it was the fabric Prince ( the singer) had his sectional redone with. I think the wall paper is really nice, and perfect for a bedroom.

The decorating element I am dying to play with is my whole house...wish I was rich and could afford to try things out, make mistakes and redo until I'm pleased :-)

I'm with you...am loving all these bold new looks with wallpaper and too scared to commit to it. But hey...if you're only doing an accent wall, costs are minimized, it's easy to remove if you tire of it and you still get the stunning impact on the 1 wall.

Here's a picture of my bedroom-please note that the brown wall is now painted out and is the same cream colour as other walls. (just realized I didn't even have the duvet cover on the bed when I took the picture...oops!!)

Someone did a mock-up of some new wallpaper behind the headboard...
While I think the look makes a statement, I'm scared to death to try anything like this!! (Could turn out to be a pretty pricey mistake...or the best thing to do)

lisa_mocha, that wallpaper behind the bed makes your room come alive! With the window wall painted white and the brown headboard your room looks fabulous and totally put together. Please go for it!

That wallpaper is fabulous especially with a black headboard in front. I'd like to see a mock-up done of the adjacent wall left black as it is now with white curtains instead of the black. That would save you the hassle of painting over the black walls, which would take many coats. If you go with the mock-up as it is then the room will turn out smashing. But if you like your black wall color it could be stunning too with white drapes. Then you'd have white popping against black on two walls. I love that. It depends on what you prefer to do...buy new drapes or paint the wall. Painting is cheaper but it doesn't have the wow factor that the black wall has. You can hardly go wrong, as long as white is in front of black and vice versa it's going to turn out great.

oops, I missed the line where you said the wall has already been painted white. So never mind!

How many times have I said that myself. I love wallpaper, DH hates it. IF ONLY wallpaper were like a stick-on and you could peel it right off. What a dream that would be, so why can't they create something like that? I'd have to pay a pro to put up wallpaper, if I tried it on my own it would end up looking like Lucy Recardo did it. So now you have that expense to factor in, makes it harder to say "let's just try it and see how we like it". Unlike buying an object and returning it to the store the next day after you see it doesn't work in your setting. Anytime there's a lot of labor involved I'm going to ponder over it for a long time and be darn sure I'll like the result. Even when I am doing the labor myself, such as painting, that still takes courage...it may be cheap but there's the mess, the smell, the inconvenience. I've been there, painted a room, hated the color and painting it over again. Do that even once and you get a little gun shy next time around! On average husbands don't have the same need to redecorate like we do which puts more pressure on us to make it look good because he's going to make us live with it for a loooong time.

I've been dreaming of putting up wallpaper in the dining room for years but I am too afraid of it turning out busy and/or not jelling with the living room walls adjacent. I also love toile, one fantasy is to put up toile wallpaper in a room and have all the drapery and chairs match. DH would die if I did that.

I'd have a stone bathroom, walls and floors, with an open shower and a cedar ceiling. One side of me says this would be a sloppy, wet mess, the other says it would be really awesome with the right ventilation and heated floors.

I'm loving hearing about everyone's dreams! And thanks for the good wallpaper karma. It'd go on the wall behind our bed (have already posted about this, too... also with no pics. I'm sorry, I know I'm lame...). But DH kindly, gently reminded me that we are still in the process of painting the wall alongside it, which is still splotched with about four samples. (He refers to it as the wall of many colors.)

But I think that fabulous Art Nouveau wallpaper is going to be perfect next to the oyster color I've finally picked for the Wall of Many Colors... so I'm keeping it in mind!

Lisa, I'd *love* a bold wallpaper behind that bed as in your mockup. Not sure: are you hesitating because that's not quite the right pattern, or b/c it's too "out there"? I wonder whether a different pattern would look a little more classic, less mod/trendy... but overall the room is gorgeous!

I love white! I would have white upholstery in LR--maybe whole house! But I am a huge animal lover & my doggies will always come before that passion. THEY are biggest passion I guess!

I also meant to answer your original question...never got to it because the wallpaper idea is my current darling :)

Another thing I'd like to play with would be entire walls of mosaic tile, like glass tile all the way up my fireplace. I'd want to be able to change them out, though, so I can have whatever strikes me at whatever time, rough-hewn one day and mirror-tile the next...The permanence is always the problem, isn't it? :)

I'd also love to be able to order F&B paint or FPE and do every single room in our house again, just to see what it would look like. I really love the Ben Moore colors we have now, really truly--the juxposition of Richmond Gray/Flowering Herbs and 50%Pleasant Valley always gives me a thrill, and the PV against the Brandon Beige does the same thing, but I'll always be curious about F&B and FPE.

OH, and I'd like to change out all our built in cabinetry (including the kitchen) to English Walnut. I'd like a wall paneled in same. I'll have to make do with the second (freestanding) wall backing the closets in our Master Bedroom. But I completely love the image of a gorgeous wood-paneled wall (not 60s-70s tract home paneling, real Dwell-mag modernist paneling) and think it would look fabulous in our PNW contemporary wannabe home...if only...

A Zuber, Paul Montgomery Studio, or deGournay French Scenic wallpaper. These are sequenced to create a mural of non repeating images. The least expensive are in the $500 per nine foot panel range, a full Zuber scenic can run $40-50K just for the paper, then it has to be archivally hung (muslin, liner paper, then the paper) It is done this way so it can be removed intact in case of leak flood fire or resale. If I had that kind of disposable income it would be first on the list.

Oh, and one more "decorating element" I'd like to play around with would be a leather Womb Chair.

Well a smallish hallway could be done on one side in Paul Montgomery, maybe including labor, for about the same price as a leather womb chair--$9-10K depending on leather, so maybe its a tie :)

If only had more money or time to look for them I would be "salon" style plastering my bedroom walls with Maxfield Parrish prints in original frames from the 20's. I have collected about 8 of them over the years and have them on the walls but it just isn't enough of them. :)

I think it has the wow factor, but not sure how long I could live with it! I tend to have a much more serene decorating style and this one would have me going out on a limb...just like the wallpaper itself, lol.

I think I could do another one that perhaps isn't so out there. Graham & Brown does have some great papers for a reasonable cost. (The forest paper a little pricier...I think @ $800 do do the 1 wall-labour excl. So-not really something I'd put up and then tear down if I decided against it.

As far as a 'dream' room though...oh boy...so many things I'd love! Right now, I'd love to have a master bedroom on the main floor (so my aging Lab doesn't have to struggle with all the stairs to be with us at night:)
I'd love higher ceilings in the room, with garden doors off the bedroom to a secluded patio w/ beautifully landscaped yard. Also-a fireplace in the bedroom.
Master ensuite-a much larger washroom w/ mosaic marble & glass tiles and a large, glass surround shower and a stand-alone soaker tub. I could go on...

My dream is not small..... I want to buy a beach cottage and decorate in a totally different cottage style and remodel the kitchen with white cabinets and soapstone.....

Then I want to get a cabin in the woods..... and do it all again. Lots of wood trim, knotty pine.....

There are just too many good styles I see here that make me want to play....

My secret is that I would LOVE to do an art deco house. I like the smooth elegance of deco, but it is too streamline for our lifestyle.

A beach cottage and a cabin in the woods- on a lake for me please ! Both must have large front porches and high ceilings!
But being realistic, being able to buy new furniture would be fun. And a large front porch to decorate would be lovely. And to squeeze a a few more feet out of my kitchen and the converted side porch would be great too. I think that is enough for now.

OK, here's another one. I love mirrored furniture, but have nowhere to put this, and secretly suspect DH would think he'd died and gone to Vegas if I brought it home. But oooh, it's cute.

I did buy some mirror tables in Jan. for our bedroom-set of 2 nesting tables to go beside the chair in our room. Anxiously waiting for them to arrive -now 8 wks and only supposed to be 2-3 wks to arrive. Hopefully...any day now!!

I want to wallpaper my ENTIRE house - it was built in 1900, it can take it, and there's evidence of old wallpaper (in patterns not inappropriate for pre-Depression era) in at least three rooms. Good stuff, like Bradbury & Bradbury, Trustworth Studios, Carter & Co., Burt Wallpapers... I guess the only way guts would come into play would be not being conservative with my choices in patterns.

Tin ceilings throughout downstairs. Actually, that might happen if we have to take down the downstairs ceilings to fix the trampoline floors upstairs, because it'd probably end up being cheaper than a proper repair (I mean drywall, it's definitely WAY cheaper than doing the "correct" plaster but good sheetrockers ain't cheap either!).

Gutting my crappy plastic-and-mdf kitchen and bathroom and do them right up to the hilt, period accurate within rational limits. :-)

Exterior restoration is a daydream that is probably never going to happen while we live here - bye-bye vinyl siding and cheap white vinyl windows, hello two-over-one wood windows (replicating the originals) and Eastlake-style clapboard-and-shingle siding.

Or just say to h*ll with it all and move to a house in better shape. :-)
