If anyone remembers my old ugly buffet from my garage...New pics!

I had posted a while back about this piece that I'd had in my garage or attic for over 15 years. It was my DH's great grandmother's, so I didn't feel right about tossing it out. I have hated this buffet for years!

But then we re-did the game room to be a sort of French Country tv room, and I thought the curly-cue lines that I hated so much might actually work in this room.

A friend with similar taste saw it and immediately said, "You need to paint it red!" I took a chance, and just finished painting and glazing it, and I actually like it! I may do another coat of glaze next week, but at least I know I can use and appreciate this furniture now. We're getting a new TV for the room, so the buffet will hold all the video games and movies.

The glaze isn't all the way dry yet, so it's photographing much brighter and more vivid than it looks it real life. It's really a very deep rusty red, and isn't as shiny.

Hi Robin, Just saw your posting and responses and wanted to add some info. American Brass & Iorn as noted used recycled iron in their foundry for years. This iron included old auto engines, transmission and differential cases, etc. that of course previously had oil in them. Todays American foundry practices do not use those types of reclaimed metals to manufacture food processing materials such as cast iron cookware to my knowledge. This is a hot and sensitive issue and current question and concern about imported cast iron especially from China. If your pan were mine I would be cautious of its use until the material content could be confirmed. AB&I also used different logos on the bottom of their pans. Most if not all pans were marked with the American Cookware logo. I had a pan and have seen others with a covered wagon on the bottom, and have seen boats and ships, all depicting americana. Your pan is unusual because of its size, large pans are hard to find. I also agree and disagree with the link to Old Jack's seasoning recipe and cleaning technique. I deal in cast iron on ebay and clean 200 or so pieces a year using the electrolysis method, fast, easy, efficient, and no posinous chemicals used. For more info on cast iron and use and cleaning I recommend the Wagner and Griswold Society or the Griswold and Cast Iron Cookware Association websites. Both sites have open forums and can be used by non members.

The chairs are incredible, you lucky bum! (an expression from my childhood, not to mean disrespect) Just yesterday when reno posted the pic of the blue and white lamp with the black shade, 'chijim' and I had been discussing the SAME THING! I have some blue and white lamps, but in my current decor, the white shades just seem too stark. I'd like to maybe use the lamps to lighten up my look a bit for spring and summer and knew if ANYONE had a pic of a blue and white lamps with a colored shade, he would. From his extensive inventory of photos - So, reno - You GO, girl! You've gone black; no need to go back!

My vote is for the entryway. While symmetry is often most pleasing on the eye, it is not always possible (and if overdone can be downright boring). You can make up for a lack of symmetry with a sense of balance. The most important thing is that it flow in the room and is anchored by other elements in the room. Perhaps you can center it relative to the wall closet opposite? Which gives it is sense of purpose so that these two areas become your organization/storage for indoor/outdoor items, mail, etc. One of the side shelves could even be a purse/briefcase (or later diaperbag) repository. I recommend the mirror and lamps similar to mine. The mirror serves not only as decor, but function so you can make a last minute check on appearance before heading out the door. Didn't you have a mantle clock? If so, that'd work well in the center, probably better than my pitcher given the proposed location. If you put decor on the top you will be less inclined to clutter it up--esp. if you designate one of the drawers for "clutter". It works with the spindle table in the room, but in this case I would not put a mirror above the spindle table, instead some artwork would look nice there, or perhaps a chair where someone could sit and put on their shoes. Perhaps even revist the idea of angling the spindle table so that everything is not linear. My take is a bit different than teacats in that I prefer not only woods to match or be very similar within a room, but the style as well. Your style seems similar to mine in that you have a mix of transitional and antique going on. Do you have a family room also? If not, then it would be a good thing to have a few bare spots in the LR to keep the future baby's playthings. I can see it working well as a salon piece also, but would be concerned the finish would get damaged by all the hair care products, scissors, etc. unless you were to get a glass top made for it.

I know I'd posted some of these pics before, but wanted to share them with sochi without hijacking her thread showcasing her glorious walnut kitchen . leela4 and susied3--Thanks for your kind words! We felt like kids in a candy store the first time we walked into Jonah's shop and saw all the amazing wood they had. It's amazing how nicely all the different wood we have in our house "play" together. :-) We have lightly stained cherry cabs in the kitchen (around the corner from the DR), unstained white oak floors, Golden Oak stained oak railings/spindles and interior and exterior doors, jambs, and moldings, pine windows and moldings stained to "match" Golden Oak, and a grapevine coffee table in the LR (looks almost like driftwood), all within view of the walnut furniture in the DR. We like the mix of wood species and colors. carol08--Thank you! I am extrememly happy with our kitchen and DR, but I will admit to seeing some others here that are absolutely lust-inspiring. Kitchen porn is a wonderful thing to behold! LOL jsweenc--you win the thesaurus of the day prize! Thank you for the superlatives! The bowl is a Michael Aram piece (loooooove his stuff!). I had remembered seeing it long ago in Bloomingdale's, and had a sudden notion that it would be just perfect on our table. Turned out, Bloomie's discontinued selling it, but I made some calls to a few of the Bloomingdale's locations within driving distance, and located 2 bowls at one of the stores. Not only was the bowl marked down drastically (clearance price!), but I had a store coupon which brought the price down even further--yay for us! trailrunner--the poor table hasn't served as a backdrop for any food of late--maybe when the bathroom work is done and stuff is cleared out (and off--my painting and wall hanging are still residing on the table awaiting being hung!). redroze--Thank you! Reno, all that piece needs now are some great vintage-looking pulls or knobs, maybe in black iron or even very dark oil rubbed bronze. It is a fabulous look and I can't believe how the color revived it!

Thanks all. I actually have the original hardware. I sort of like it. If I do look for replacement hardware, it will have to have a big, round escutcheon, as there are definite deep groove wear marks from the original hardware.

For now, I can live with the original stuff until I find something that jumps out at me.

I'll post pics in a few minutes when Photobucket stops being slow.....

Sure thing. I actually sanded the piece about 10 years ago, and then decided it was too ugly to bother with!

Sanded
Tack cloth
Painted 2 coats of semi-gloss red paint (a color called Red Caboose I had leftover from another project)

Brushed on Minwax Wood Sheen Rubbing oil and stain finish and lightly rubbed off with a soft cloth.

That's it.

I will probably go ahead and do another light coat of the glaze next week after this is completely cured to take a little more of the edge off of the red.

I love how it turned out. I would be in heaven to have a piece like that in my home. It's so funny that you disliked it so much, cause I would have been running for it if I saw it at a tag sale. Glad you are appreciating it now!

That's fantastic! I have a very similar piece that was my DH grandmother's and I am going to do just what you did.

Did you use a primer? If not, why not? Is it better not to use a primer?

Do you know what type of wood it is made of?

I love transformations like that....I often look at pieces on craigslist and think of what could be done to them....If I had a barn or space to transform pieces I would....you did a fantastic job...I love it.

Not an ugly old buffet any more!! I'd love to have a piece of furniture from my Great Grandparents, instead I watch for furniture that belonged to other people's GGP. :)

Sweeeet! There's an old buffet in my parent's garage that I will end up with someday and it's equally ugly, only twice bigger. AAACCKK! Painting it like you did would be awesome! Unfortunately mom believes painting wood is a SIN, so she'll definitley have to be gone first!

You have inspired me. This is now my next project (after the bathroom is finished).

I have always thought this piece was ratty looking but it served a purpose in our bedroom. The cat sleeps on top and the TV is there also. I also use it to keep my office papers.

Thanks to you it will soon have a new look.

I just checked it out a bit and noticed that the drawers are dovetailed but could not find a manufacture's name. Do you know who made yours?

Renofan - it looks GREAT! I love that you kept the wood natural on the top and the red glaze make the pretty detail on the front doors & drawers really "pop". You and your family will enjoy this for years.

*sigh* Makes me want to go scour some of the old furniture places around here for a new spring project!

Reno, that looks absolutely darling. I'm so glad you decided to save it -- and with leftover paint to boot! Clever you. I hope you'll be posting pics of it when you get it in place in the French Country TV room. Sounds exciting! Great grandma would no doubt be pleased, and they don't make 'em like they used to. You have a nice piece there.
