Do you Photograph in the rain?

Its raining here. I just wondered aside from rainbows what kind of photo opts have you gotten from taking pic's in the rain? I read yesterday its not usually good because of being so grey out but thought someone has had to taken advantage of this and gotten some good pic's..

I had a hole poked through a walmart bag. I have a weather sealed camera that I have taken pictures with in the rain, but I can find any pictures I had taken with it in the rain. That's odd cause I know I have somewhere.
I dropped the camera in the lake when getting in the boat, I know it didnt do anything to the camera but it did give me a scare .

Oh, my -- A rose lover tries to get some useful information from other rose folk, only to be hearing about needed rain in California and a mythological definition for rain. Aren't there any other websites where you folks might "bless" others with your non-sequitarian comments? My heart does go out to the Californians along with a financial contribution of support for those in need. And certainly, mythology is quite fascinating. Everything has its place. Perhaps, there is a weather web or a mythology web where you can chat with others who are interested. All that I really wanted to know was about roses that still bloom in rain for future reference. Anyone else out there who might offer some useful info? CJ

Normally I would answer like gardenerme but we've been having thunderstorms lately in the late afternoon. It's clouding up as I type this. So I'll be moving a few more roses that got bigger than expected. Like that doesn't happen on a regular basis in So.Cal. sigh . . . Most of our rain in So.Cal comes during the winter and early spring months so I'm inside anyway. We also get snow where I live. I've got a few hobbies, like quilting, painting, home decor, and upholstering so I'm never without a project. We have occasional summer thunderstorms, which I usually enjoy from the front porch swing. That's until the lightening gets too close. Then I and the kitties head indoors and hope there's an Angel or Cub game on the tube. : ) Diana

Well - soon-to-be-named TS Colin is expected to dump 3-6 inches of rain on us tomorrow. Echies will be coming under cover of the lanai for sure. I think my newly rooted Agave pups will come in, too. I'll keep an eye on the sky to see how to handle any other plants. But I feel confident in the gritty mix helping me out. I had a surprise 7 inches of rain one day in January. Didn't have time to move plants, but they all fared well. As a side note - we average 10 inches of rain in June. I've already had 3 inches of rain, so if I get the 6 inches we'll be pretty near the total average. That doesn't bode well for the summer, does it?

Joe, I'll never forget an experience at Lake George. My dad, who was completely familiar with both cameras and boats, had one foot on a dock and one foot on a boat, and several cameras around his neck. The boat moved away, and he and the cameras ended up in the lake. He was fine, of course, but the cameras were not.

I was only ten at the time, so I don't know what cameras they were. I'm sure they were good ones, though.

Well my older Olympus wasn't in the rain but a whole lot of hot coffee with milk, no sugar. Opened it up as much as I dared dried with a hair dryer and left it overnight to dry out further. The only failure I had was the cable to transfer to a PC never worked again. Bought a card reader.
I only use the camera in the morning for the coffee smell.

Syd, not all cameras are weather sealed, make sure you take precautions when you take the camera into a wet enviroment.

Sometimes the gray's don't come out as nice as if taken in morning/afternoon sun....but if there's a storm they can look tumultious (with & without sun)...I have taken pics in the rain but didn't quite capture what I was thinking it would...I got this as a result of a light rain...

Hi Juanital,

I noticed your comment "gave this some gamma" and I hope you won't be upset that I took the liberty to make further adjustments to your image, it's a nice photo and it needs more of that "gamma" as you called it. I like the photo very much -- I took it into photoshop and used the Levels sdjustment to normalize the tone distribution. Then I used Curves to just tweek the low end a smidge down.

Often what our camera captures is just the starting point to an exciting image, but we have to see the potential that's there to be opened up. The photo below on the left came from my camera "as is." In the photo on the right the tree is aflame -- used a little "gamma."

Unsharp mask

This really makes many images pop, it does not sharpen. It won't work if the image has blown whites or highlights.

Hi Sierra,

I've never heard it called image pop -- but I've seen the unsharp mask radius being used to produce an overall contrast increase. The technique can produce halos around objects against a light background so be careful.

You can get better control over the effect by increasing both the amount and the radius even further and then tweaking the final result by going to the Edit menu and fading the unsharp mask.

Sierra, not long ago I upgraded irfanview and they had the unsharp mask (adjustable) as well as other new filters, pretty cool stuff...

Thanks Joe, can't say I have ever seen halos when using this......I have seen them when I have resized and or over sharpened though. Something to keep in mind and watch for.

Juanital, keep going you have a very artistic eye. Ya all these programs are fun to play with and learn what they can do. Sometimes you even get a few surprises.
