I've done it a few times...always under an umbrella. :-)

This one was more of a mist than a rainfall:

I had a hole poked through a walmart bag. I have a weather sealed camera that I have taken pictures with in the rain, but I can find any pictures I had taken with it in the rain. That's odd cause I know I have somewhere.
I dropped the camera in the lake when getting in the boat, I know it didnt do anything to the camera but it did give me a scare .

Gambling: do you spray when rain is in the forecast?
Q
Comments (4)
If it rains 12 hours after you sprayed, there should be no problem. It only takes the spray 1-2 hours to dry, and once it is dry, rain doesn't affect it. Well, maybe I should first ask what you are spraying before I say that. If it is something like Bayer Garden Disease Control for Roses, Flowers, and Shrubs, all it needs is to get dry. Then rain doesn't matter. If I were getting ready to spray and noticed that the weather report said 30% chance of rain, I would go ahead and spray under most circumstances. A 30% chance of rain means that there is a 70% chance that it won't rain. I don't even let a 40% chance of rain stop me--unless it actually starts sprinkling out there. At 60% chance of rain, I figure the odds are now in favor of the rain--although even then, it may not rain--and I do not spray on that day. As for your picture, unless you can show me a more detailed, close-up picture showing blackspot, I would say that No, that is not blackspot. Some of the yellowing leaves could be older leaves which the bush is shedding, making way for young new leaves, or the yellowing could be caused by too much or too little water (either will produce yellowing leaves). However, some of the other leaves appear to be suffering from RMV (Rose Mosaic Virus)--there appear to be yellow markings on some of the leaves. There is nothing you can do about RMV--in fact, a goodly number of roses on the market are all infected with RMV. Most of us find that the symptoms (gold marks on leaves) only show up occasionally in the spring. Other than that, the rose seems to suffer no problems as a result of the RMV. (There are a few posters who take a different approach to the subject, however.) Hope that helps. Kate

Hi Karen, It is raining! My pots are outside right now up against the garage wall. The overhang (roof) from the garage gives them a bit of protection. Yesterday, I put out two brugmansia pots to get some sun -- I forgot to bring them in and hope the rain didn't knock down the buds and blooms on them :-( There is always something! Going to see The Wicked today at 1 PM; hope the rain doesn't create a problem with us getting there.

Do you use rain water or stick your plants into rain?
Q
Comments (14)
Exactly! You should install rain barrels...Catch plenty of rain for the winter months so that your plants are not subjected to the tap water all those months.. For me, even though I grow in very porous mixes, the mineral deposits including salts and chlorine wreak havoc on most of my house plants. That is why I gather rain through the warmer months and fill 5 30 gallon buckets for the winter which will last me until about spring. My Orchids in particular HATE tap water even if I flush them every time because the salts still linger and slowly eat away very healthy looking roots. That is why they come out of my house and greenhouse the entire summer to get rained on if we ever get any. Thunderstorms are a thing of the past and now drought has taken hold every summer. It's saddening. Every drop of clean rain water I can collect is like gold. Now I do a heavy watering with the hose tap water on my orchids and then follow with a rinse of rain water. I stick my peace lilies, pathos , palms, dracaena, Philos and many others out every time it rains or they look like crap after a few months. When I use rain water, all the new leaves come in unmarred and so vivid. What a difference rain water makes over tap water for sure! Rhizo, hello to you too..You are missed..Shall we write soon?))

What Do You Do About Significant Rain?

The in grounds were a mixed bag. New Pluot Tree is just growing like crazy. The Persimmon looks great but the rain seems to have drawn out a ton of ant which are starting to cover the tree. But my biggest concern is the 2 year old pear. Thats the tree sitting lowest and exposed to the most water. The tree hasn't grown at all this year and of the 20-30 new fruits that originally set only 6 have made it through both storms. Not sure if the weather's to blame or my lack of a 2nd Tree to pollinate... I doubled up on the thickness of the mulch to act as a sponge so maybe that will help!

Joe, I'll never forget an experience at Lake George. My dad, who was completely familiar with both cameras and boats, had one foot on a dock and one foot on a boat, and several cameras around his neck. The boat moved away, and he and the cameras ended up in the lake. He was fine, of course, but the cameras were not.

I was only ten at the time, so I don't know what cameras they were. I'm sure they were good ones, though.

Well my older Olympus wasn't in the rain but a whole lot of hot coffee with milk, no sugar. Opened it up as much as I dared dried with a hair dryer and left it overnight to dry out further. The only failure I had was the cable to transfer to a PC never worked again. Bought a card reader.
I only use the camera in the morning for the coffee smell.

Thats funny Spook.

Syd, not all cameras are weather sealed, make sure you take precautions when you take the camera into a wet enviroment.

Sometimes the gray's don't come out as nice as if taken in morning/afternoon sun....but if there's a storm they can look tumultious (with & without sun)...I have taken pics in the rain but didn't quite capture what I was thinking it would...I got this as a result of a light rain...
Gave this some gamma

Hi Juanital,

I noticed your comment "gave this some gamma" and I hope you won't be upset that I took the liberty to make further adjustments to your image, it's a nice photo and it needs more of that "gamma" as you called it. I like the photo very much -- I took it into photoshop and used the Levels sdjustment to normalize the tone distribution. Then I used Curves to just tweek the low end a smidge down.

{{!gwi}}

Often what our camera captures is just the starting point to an exciting image, but we have to see the potential that's there to be opened up. The photo below on the left came from my camera "as is." In the photo on the right the tree is aflame -- used a little "gamma."

Nice PS work Joe.

Do you know about image pop?
Unsharp mask
30 60 10

This really makes many images pop, it does not sharpen. It won't work if the image has blown whites or highlights.

Hi Sierra,

I've never heard it called image pop -- but I've seen the unsharp mask radius being used to produce an overall contrast increase. The technique can produce halos around objects against a light background so be careful.

You can get better control over the effect by increasing both the amount and the radius even further and then tweaking the final result by going to the Edit menu and fading the unsharp mask.

Thanks Sydney...
Joe, I don't mind at all that you did that! I thought something else could be done with it...and think you've done a nice job...
Sierra, not long ago I upgraded irfanview and they had the unsharp mask (adjustable) as well as other new filters, pretty cool stuff...

Thanks Joe, can't say I have ever seen halos when using this......I have seen them when I have resized and or over sharpened though. Something to keep in mind and watch for.

Juanital, keep going you have a very artistic eye. Ya all these programs are fun to play with and learn what they can do. Sometimes you even get a few surprises.
