In my first condo (building c. 1840, conversion 1965) I had my mirror place cut plate glass as shelves for the powder room ( a little under 36" wide), and the plan was to use clear plastic mirror clips screwed into the side walls as cleats to set the two shelves on. The one above the pedestal sink went up fine. The one above the toilet required multiple drill bits and three different types of wall anchor for four different clips. I hit framing, I hit nothing behind the drywall in one spot, I hit soft brick that needed an anchor because it just crumbled, and I hid something incredibly hard that ruined a drill bit. It might have been an old nail in the masonry wall or something. The shelf was only 9" deep but the wall changed completely in those 9 inches.
