if i had to do it .... i would get a pot.. and some cactus mix.. and transplant it ASAP ... and get it accustomed to the pot.. before the long drive home. and then i would put the pot in full shade and not plant it in mother earth.. until the leaves fall off ... trees do not like regular high peat media... it can hold too much water .. they like a drink and near total drainage ... even to be dry for a day or two .. before wetting again .... but in a small pot.. dont let the pot get too hot.. nor too dry.. while holding the plant over ... even if you have to stick the pot in the soil.. to temper august heat ... but dont shock it twice.. by digging it up.. then transporting it .. and then immediately replanting it... wait.. thats three shocks... and on the drive home.. no stopping for 12 afternoon drinks.. and leaving your pet tree in a closed car on the parking lot... crikey.. traveling with plants is worse than kids.. you just cant leave them in a closed locked car ... lol ... make sense...?? someone else can ID it for you .. but why not practice regardless... good luck.. let us know how it works out ... ken ps: i was told .. long ago.. its hard to ID oak babes.. as mature leaf form is better for ID ....but it sure does look like a swamper to my untrained eye ....

The other possibility is a planted Q. dentata, Daimio Oak. It's a small tree, native to China, Korea and Japan, with obovate, broadly lobed leaves that can be up to or over 30cm long and 28cm wide, according to The Hillier Manual of Trees and Shrubs. I had a cultivar, for a while, until the top of a pine tree broke off in a wind storm and smashed it, from which it never recovered. The leaves, even on a small specimen, were very large.

I also have lots of oak trees and make mulch from the shredded leaves. In fact, I have three large yard bags full of them right now making quick compost. The only caution is try not to get too many acorns with the leaves - just take leaves that blow against fences or other plants. If you rake the ground under the trees for leaves, you'll get a lot of acorns mixed up with them and they are bad. The tanic acid in them inhibits growth and you don't want to put any of them around your plants or veggies. But the leaves themselves are great mulch and compost. Have fun!

Really, if you have a wood burning fireplace, cut some down to thin out the stand. If you pick ones that aren't too big you won't even have to split them. Leave the smaller ones for your harvest in a couple of years. The lower branches that always die on the older trees make wonderful kindling. You can't beat mother nature. My husband gave up on his "life support garden" which was a raised bed of hydrangeas and azaleas, under blackjack and post oak. It was beautiful the first year, but the tree roots invaded until we have basically what we started with, except it is now a raised bed full of roots, and even harder to keep watered. He got a ton of weeds in the loads of dirt he brought it, and we are fighting those. I figure, if it is growing, let it alone. Use natives. I have a "flower bed" on the sunny side of my blackjack patch. I have ruellia, coreopsis, big bluestem grass, black eyed susan. Anything that grows wild around here. Also some non-native but rugged plants that tolerate the soil and drought: iris, crape myrtle, flowering quince, spirea, sedum, miscanthus. The quince will do fine in a fair amound of shade. For intermediate height between the blackjacks and the rest of the yard, I like sumac. It turns bright red in the fall, and thrives in the drought and clay. There is a native, low growing "fragrant sumac" that has nice fall color and lives under blackjacks if it gets part sun. If you have some patches of that, encourage it. For flowering trees, redbud works as an understory tree. Flowering crabapple works in the poor soil but it needs sun, and the roots are invasive.
