Site conditions? (Ground floor, above/below ground floor, fairly even/uneven walls, fairly even/uneven ceilings, level/unlevel floors, ...this list goes on as well!)

Excellent/good/OK/mediocre/crappy install expectations?

The only way you're going to be able to determine what it should cost is to get 3 or more estimates from your local contractors (the more the better). You may have to pick out different cabinets for each, but if you stay w/similar specs then it should be a fair comparison.

When you do get those estimates, be sure to ask for a detailed breakdown of all components + detailed list of installation costs. This is to enable a better comparison and to alert you to someone who may not be really including everything in their price (but you can be sure you'll pay for anything missing from the estimate later in project overruns!)

We did our last kitchen (about that same size) for around 17K. We gutted the kitchen and replaced the floors. We did not move any plumbing or electrical (electrical can be SO expensive, so it would have been more if we had decided to change our footprint more drastically). We went with Kraftmaid cabinets from Lowes (I got a 10% discount and we got very few upgrades). We got a silestone countertop (at a great, great price-- was less than Corian would have been). The day the plumber came, I ran out and bought a faucet at Home Depot. I was also my own GC, so I got multiple bids for every step of the process. We got middle-of-the-road appliances at a scratch and dent store. Did not need to replace the DW.

We could have done it for a little bit less (laminate instead of silestone, for example).

If you came into my showroom with a diagram with those dimensions (assuming 8' ceilings) and the kitchen was an L shaped one with cabinets along both of the legs, I'd estimate your cabinets would cost 4K at the very low bare bones end in an oak partial overlay style to 18K at the high end with all drawers or pull out trays with inserts, stacked cabinets with glass inserts and multiple stacked moldings and applied door end finished panels, in a distressed painted cherry finish. At another showroom with different manufacturers, that 18K might be the starting price in their cabinet lines and it might go up from there for handcrafted painted inset, etc.

That's the reality. Until you finalize your wants and needs, and select the manufacturer, the estimate will be that varied and it will all fit in the same size kitchen. BTW, my estimates were for just the cabinets, not the installation. A good guideline for installation is to expect to pay 10-20% for the labor for install. Again, it will all depend on the level of complexity of your design and the number of cabinet pieces and molding pieces that it contains.

Check with your local cabinet makers..I actually found that the locals custom was alot cheaper than Kraftmaid and several semi-custom lines..it was a no-brainer for me and the area I am in Burlington NC

Here's an 8'x8' kitchen that I did about 5 years ago. To date, it's the smallest kitchen I've ever done....and it had two doorways and a window. What a challenge.

They went with a more expensive doorstyle in the Medallion designer series. So, this is definitely more on the middle to higher end side. Plus the house had some drywall work that needed to be done. The house had plaster walls (c. 1940).

I don't remember all the labor, but I think there was soffit removal, a small closet was removed, electrical work, lighting....etc. We did not include any flooring or backsplash work. Homeowner reused existing refrigerator and purchased a microwave and integrated DW on her own.

With stock grade or KraftMaid cabinets instead and laminate tops, I would think this kitchen could be done for quite a bit less - $10K-15K installed.

As other posters have already stated, there are *lots* of variables in pricing. In talking with a KD in designing my last kitchen remodel, she likened pricing a kitchen remodel to purchasing an automobile, which I thought was a good analogy. You can spend under $10,000 for a Kia or Hundai or over $100,000 for a Jaguar or a Bentley and everything in between, depending on type and quality of cabinets/appliances/countertop, etc. You easily can spend more money just on purchasing appliances than some people spend on their entire remodel. Everything is relative....you need to set a budget and figure out what your budget will allow for.

LOL, all I can say is that is will cost more than you think :-)

if i got my hands on it, it would run $200K. dh accuses me of having very expensive taste so obviously in this case, size doesn't matter. but seriously, it depends on so many factors it's impossible to give any kind of answer without very specific info. good luck!

My mother-in-law just did her small kitchen over (similiar in size) and spent about $20,000. I feel she did not get her $ worth. She has had nothing but problems w/ her cabinets. He istalled doors that where warped and and her draws were suppose to be dovetailed & weren't. She also doesn't know what manufactor he used. She did do alot of interior work, (moved water and gas lines and also opened up a wall). She had prices ranging from $15,000 - $25,000. (opening wall was a last minute decision). Just be carefull and fully state everything in contract.

I don't know how much it would cost--but I can tell you what were real upcharges for us (some we still did, some we excluded because of cost)

-inset cabinets
-painted wood instead of stained
-glaze
-crown moulding (the thicker and fancier, the more expensive) or bringing cabinets to the ceiling
-door style (usually the plainer the cheaper)
-wood species (oak is usually cheapest, then maple, then cherry)
-regular cabinets vs. drawers vs. pullouts (in expense order)
-glass cabinets
-wood hood
-two doors on upper cabinets (getting one makes it cheaper)
-Lazy Susans, blind corner cabinets, double oven cabinets, garbage pullouts, etc.

Oh, and not shopping your plan around can cost an arm and a leg! I found HUGE discrepancies among similar brands and even the same brands!

This is a really great thread. It's always hard to balance out what one wants versus what one is willing to pay. I'm going through this compromise myself. Just take your time, you will figure it out. I've come to realize quite a few things in the costing phase.

Sarah, great info. Also, since the cabinets are such a huge chunk of the expense, really shop around for them. We have a small kitchen, not nearly enough cabinets. And still we got some outrageous quotes. First we went to 1 kitchen showroom and got quotes on the mac-daddy cabinets (Century), then a grade just below that. Century was close to 30k. The "cheap ones" were 24k. That was with full overlay, but ALL the bells and whistles.

Since this is our second home, and a total rehab, neither of those were in the budget. Upon our contractor's suggestion, we went to HD to look at their Thomasville line. They had the door style we wanted. The same cabinet set up in their highest quality with all the bells and whistles was only $15k. BIG difference. I hate HD and was skeptical, but budgetary concerns won out. Plus our contractor, not HD, is installing them, which is where I've heard most of the problems arise.

So yeah, shop around. :-)

Please stop by and comment on my "sink area" thread - the more opinions the better. We're ready to order crown molding and I need to figure out the sink b4 we do so we don't end up short!

Yes, I did sell that job. The kitchen turned out exquisite! The DH said, there's not much you can do to this kitchen to excite me, it's so small. But he was 'flipping' over it after it was done!

I've always wanted pics of this kitchen....I will try to contact my client...although it's been 5 years now.
